The New York International Auto Show has just kicked off in the Big Apple, and among the big storylines from this year’s show is the announcement of very special Ford Mustang. Half a century ago the Mustang made its debut at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, and to mark that milestone Ford has not only placed a new Mustang convertible atop the Empire State Building, but it’s just unveiled a 50th anniversary edition of the 2015 car.
While we already know a lot about the new 2015 Mustang, it’s not surprising that Ford is taking the birthday celebration to another level. Based on the GT model with the Track Pack option, the 50th Anniversary Edition is sure to be an instant hit among collectors thanks to limited production numbers and some cool retro touches.
The car will come with essentially every option available on the new Mustang, with buyers’ only choice being either a six speed manual or automatic transmission. There will be just two exterior finishes available: Kona Blue, and Wimbledon White – the color of the first-ever Mustang sold back in 1964.
Along with special badging and identification, the anniversary model will include some special exterior touches like chrome-trimmed tailights and louvered rear quarter windows.
Perhaps most prominent is a unique front grille which pays homage to the original 1964.5 model.
The interior also gets some loving with a unique aluminum-trimmed dash panel, special seat upholstery and cashmere stitching throughout.
Production will be limited to just 1,964 examples – just like the 50th anniversary Porsche 911 that we recently drove. Given the huge following that the Mustang has built over the decades, I think these should sell out pretty quick.
Happy birthday, Mustang. Here’s to another half-century of fun.

meh...
Aesthetics45 mustang not iconic enough?
Wimbledon white?! Can I have a strawberry on that too?
Happy Birthday!
Love it or don't, the Mustang is an icon in American automotive history. I remember my first encounter with it car shopping in 2005, when the S197 was just hitting the lots. It was a Windveil Blue GT and I hugged it without really knowing why. I had no idea that it would flip the switch that turned into a passion for all cars. I didn't own one until about two years ago, but fulfilling that dream has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. I may even purchase a new one in the near future!
Speedhunters opened my eyes to a whole new world of automotive culture, thank you for recognizing this classic piece of automotive history! Here's to another fifty years!
There is currently a yellow mustang convertible on the roof of the empire state building. No joke. Must also have to do with the 50th aniversary
prazzi It's another homage to when they did so back in 1965.
Kinda cool how they got it up there

I love mustangs. I own two. Here's to another 50!
I'm actually looking forward to this new generation of mustangs.
@Zebra P Knee Aesthetics45 No, it's definitely iconic. But I'm kinda meh about the whole thing as well. I honestly love the current generation. I'm not so sure I like the front end of this 50th version.
As an owner and lover of mustangs, unfortunatly have to agree. Seems they tried fording it up to much. In person the front looks overly round and bubbly. I'm sure it will grow on us however.
Soo cool. Thanks for posting the pic
It was a bit of shock seeing the 2015 mustang for the first time, but the car is already growing on me.
I love it, such a fresh redesign, and i cant wait to see one of these slammed! For those hating on the "European" design influences, well Ford have always had a HUGE relationship with European racing and infact the GT40s of the 60's were designed, built, run, and maintained in England... I may be partial as a '67 Mustang owner, but this is the first "new" car (of any make) in years that really has my juices flowing...
Heres a pic of my baby.
@flushpoke Eww dude, no one needs to hear about your juices running, keep that to yourself. Nice Stang tho!
zuberbomb Lol thanks zbomb, I was talking more about blood pumping and drooling, I can see how that sounded a little creepy tho lol.
Don't like this front end design. Half-Jaguar, half-Aston
And overall body looks too heavy, massive.
A lot of those photos are taken at very specific angles. Why? Look how ugly it is in the 4th photo! That front end WTF? Not to mention the rear hump and rice interior gauges.
Love the back end, hate the front.
you guys that dont like it can get a life
the front of you MilesHayler looks like the back
Lee111 Its 300 pounds less then the 2014 those were 800 pounds less than the chevy and dodge
