THE TOYOTA MUSEUM JAPAN: MODEL A TO FAIRLADY Z

THE TOYOTA MUSEUM JAPAN: MODEL A TO FAIRLADY Z

As strange as this might sound, this story from my visit to the Toyota Automobile Museum in Aichi, Japan is not going to contain a single Toyota. As I touched on in my introductory post about the museum, a fair portion of the enormous facility is dedicated to telling the global history of the automobile, [...]

CANEPA: EXPERIENCE THE JOY

CANEPA: EXPERIENCE THE JOY

Based on the feedback from yesterday’s story about my experience at Canepa for its Cars & Coffee event, it seems you guys are rather excited by the array of magnificent cars found at this place. I can’t say I’m surprised, as there are few places that compare when it comes to experiencing raw #joyofmachine. Today [...]

CANEPA DOES CARS & COFFEE

CANEPA DOES CARS & COFFEE

In terms of car-related shops, I’ve yet to experience anything quite like Canepa. Then again, the word ‘shop’ doesn’t even begin to describe this enormous facility tucked away in scenic Scotts Valley, California. It’s part restoration garage, part race car maintenance facility, part showroom and part museum. In terms of privately owned temples of motoring, [...]

LIFE VS. LEMONS: THE LITTLE PORSCHE MUSEUM

LIFE VS. LEMONS: THE LITTLE PORSCHE MUSEUM

Prior to our recent Wörthersee adventure to Austria I made some bold promises. It was Paddy’s first trip to the legendary gathering of tuned Volkswagen Group cars and I’d ensured him of sunshine, speedboat taxis and ice cold beer. I may have even mentioned dancing girls. Unusually, though, the skies darkened and Lake Wörth was [...]

VW MUSEUM: WATER IN THE VEINS

VW MUSEUM: WATER IN THE VEINS

I believe that car design directly charts the shifting tides and styles of humanity itself. So would you agree that as they become more and more complex, so do our lives? Is it so bad that I crave cars from a time gone by? Or is it a good thing that I recognise what kind [...]

AUDI MUSEUM: CLIMBING TO HISTORY

AUDI MUSEUM: CLIMBING TO HISTORY

What do you think of when you think of Audi? A manufacturer of quality? Precision German engineering? Or perhaps a brand that manages to marry both function and form in its vehicles? As the latter, the Audi Forum provides a perfect showcase. Just take a look at the shot above. Not only are the vehicles [...]

MORE THAN HISTORY: THE TOYOTA MUSEUM JAPAN

MORE THAN HISTORY: THE TOYOTA MUSEUM JAPAN

During my five years of working as a Speedhunter I’ve had the opportunity to visit lots of auto museums, both in the United States and in Japan. From large factory-owned facilities to smaller privately-owned collections, I’ve been able to see it all. I have to say that so far nothing has been quite like what [...]

FLAT 4: TOKYO’S VW MECCA

By now I think that most Speedhunters readers are aware of Japan’s – for lack of a better word – “awesome” car culture. Regular followers will also know that Japan’s love for the automobile spreads far beyond just its own domestic vehicles. From ultra-rare European exotics to hot rods and customs that could rival the [...]

THE REAL LIFE INITIAL D ON DISPLAY

Before I close out the coverage of my visit to the Yokota Museum, I want to share a few photos of one the most interesting displays in the entire place. I’m gonna go ahead and guess that most of you guys are familiar with Initial D, the Japanese manga and anime series which is set [...]

KYUSHA HEAVEN: BROWSING THE YOKOTA COLLECTION

KYUSHA HEAVEN: BROWSING THE YOKOTA COLLECTION

In yesterday’s post I took you guys on a little trip through the M. Yokota Museum in Gunma, Japan. Today I’d like to follow that up with a more detailed look at the vintage automobile collection, which is one of the museum’s biggest drawcards. From rare sports cars and competition vehicles to more family-friendly vehicles [...]

JAPAN’S GOOD OLD DAYS: THE YOKOTA MUSEUM

JAPAN’S GOOD OLD DAYS: THE YOKOTA MUSEUM

Nestled in the hills of Japan’s scenic Gunma Prefecture lies a car museum unlike any other I’ve ever seen. Actually, to even call this place a “car museum” is to understate just what you’ll find here. A visit to the M. Yokota Museum is like taking a trip back to a different era, and the [...]

BROOKLANDS MUSEUM: THE FASTEST ON EARTH

BROOKLANDS MUSEUM: THE FASTEST ON EARTH

The Brooklands oval in the UK was home to the fastest cars on earth for the 32 years it was open, and the modern Brooklands Museum celebrates this fact with an impressive collection of cars from both the track’s glory period and the post-war years following the circuit’s closure. This means the chance to see [...]

Well guys, this is it, the very last hours of 2012. In fact, some of you will already be reading this in the new year. Very soon the site will return to our usual schedule of awesome feature cars and event coverage, but before we dive into 2013 I wanted to take one last look [...]

Bored out of my mind waiting for my university admission exam (or HSC for those of you who live in NSW, Australia) results, wanting fresh contents for my new-found blog EIGHTEENTWELVE and to have a crack at the #IAMTHESPEEDHUNTER program, I decided to take a three-hour road trip from South Sydney to visit the National [...]

THE MAGIC OF MONDELLO PARK

THE MAGIC OF MONDELLO PARK

Your local racing circuit is a special place, yet one that is often overlooked – unless you happen to live next door to the Nordschleife. I guess it’s a case of the grass always being greener on the other side, but rarely do we give enough credit to our home circuits. I’ve shot more events at Mondello Park than I care to remember, and as such have pretty much taken the place for granted. With all the doom and gloom – financially speaking – surrounding the world of motorsport these days, it has made me looking at things differently and forced me to appreciate things more. Rather than taking Mondello for granted, I want to show you why it’s one of my favourite racing circuits anywhere in the world.
