Am more looking at the lineage of the visual style with this post, not the culture.
From my understanding part of the look of the extreme Bosozuku cars was "inspired" by japanese versions of Group 5 or Silhouette cars. Have seen that cited in mutiple sources. Like so:

Obviously we all know that the culture does not come from 1980s race cars as such but there is a partial inspiration in the visual style from Group 5. Late 60s/early 70s Japanese touring cars being the other main visual inspiration.
