This ’57 is the epitome of stance, and I don’t mean in a hellaflush or poked or whatever-other-name-someone’s-thought-of kinda way. Randy Winkle’s gasser has stance in such a way that it creates a presence. A presence strong enough that I made a beeline for it when I saw it at March Meet. I didn’t realize [...]
I was in full Speedhunting mode when I attended March Meet last month, scouring Famoso Raceway to bring you the best the nostalgia drag race world had on offer. Of course there were gobs of old school dragsters and gassers, but I was looking for that one special car that stopped me dead in my [...]
Although I’m presenting this ’65 Ford Galaxie as a project, it’s really more courtship than commitment at the moment. I met the owner of this Bellflower-styled custom at the carwash a month ago, and based on my observations he needed a little help. The poor carwash attendant closed the door when he jumped out (car [...]
Choosing cars to spotlight is tricky business, and at a show where most of the cars have already been in HOT ROD Magazine the difficulty increases exponentially. There were just so many good cars at the HOT ROD Homecoming that picking out the ones we wanted to show was tough. For that reason I started [...]
It was a surreal scene, to be surrounded by cars that I had ogled in HOT ROD Magazine for much of my youth. You don’t really expect to encounter magazine cars in real life – for some reason they seem quarantined within those pages – so the concept of a car show that consists solely of HOT [...]
Back when the cliche “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” still held true, there existed OE-backed drag cars like this one – Bob Ream’s 1964 A/FX Ford Falcon. The FX stood for Factory Experimental, a class which allowed manufacturers to fit the largest engine available and alter (sometimes drastically) the body of a production vehicle. The [...]
As you saw in our Nostalgia Immersion: March Meet 2013 coverage, there were plenty of mega-buck Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars at the March Meet, but they were far outnumbered by the hobbyist drag racers and their production vehicle racecars. These are cars that we mere mortals might have a chance at owning and [...]
It’s the smell of nitro and rubber turned to smoke, BBQ and kettle corn; the sudden crack of a blower separating from its engine at 260mph, enough to make you jump even with earplugs; the guttural tremor as a Top Fuel car claws for traction. This must be March Meet. 55 years later, people still [...]
There are few car collectors as rabid as chat show host Jay Leno, and the latest car he’s turned his attention to is Keith Charvonia’s Drag’n Kaiser. This episode of Jay Leno’s Garage is dedicated to Keith’s ’51 Kaiser project, and sheds even more light on the incredible details behind this beautiful build. Eight years of hard work went in, and 15 minutes isn’t enough to do more than a quick walk around and a short road-test, but it still gives a great insight into the myriad details that have made this car so special.
