Because of the judged nature of drifting, the sport has many naysayers out there. But I actually think that’s the reason why it’s popular among younger gear-heads. It also makes me wonder why drifting is not part of the X Games. Most of the disciplines included in the Olympics of action sport are judged – just look at skateboarding or freestyle motocross. I think drifting would fit right in.
It’s the uncertainty of judging that can be so exciting at times. When a battle is really close and it’s hard for you personally to pick a winner, waiting in anticipation for the call is half the fun.
That’s why drivers in Formula Drift push it to the limit – they don’t leave the outcome in the judges’ hands.
Which leads to some serious carnage. And carnage is what Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington, is known for.
Think about it – wouldn’t it be absolutely boring if the judges calls went your way every time? I love sitting around a dinner table talking about how calls should have gone, and which battles were game changers.
In terms of championship implications, Formula Drift Seattle was always going to be exciting. If you guys haven’t already watched the highlights from the event, you can check out all the Top 16 battles here.
Big Moves, Big ChampionshipHistorically, Chris Forsberg has always done well at Seattle. That’s why it was a huge surprise to everyone when he got knocked out in the Top 16 bracket by Alec Hohnadell.
In front of a sold out crowd, Formula Drift’s defending champion met his match when he went up against the 19-year-old from Florida.
Chris wasn’t the only one who hit a setback in Seattle. Ryan Tuerck was the points leader going into the weekend, but mechanical issues in the Top 32 bracket meant he lost the position. It’s going to be tough for him to regain it back.
Odi Bakchis qualified in the top 10, but he had a harsh draw and met former Formula Drift champion and Speedhunters driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the first round.
Coming into Seattle, Odi was gunning for his first FD Pro championship and the very first FD World championship title as well.
One of three drivers who have been competing in Formula Drift since day one is having a stellar season this year.
Ken Gushi has been very open about the changes that his team have made to the car, which are allowing him to perform at 100 per cent. He is currently in 4th position, but over 100 points behind the leader Fredric Aasbø.
While many of the teams were complaining about judging calls as well as all the drama in Seattle – which I will touch on shortly – Fredric had nothing to grumble about.
Although, the win did not come easy for the Norwegian Hammer and his Papadakis Racing team.
On qualifying day, the motor in Rockstar Energy Drink/Hankook Tires Scion tC decided to take a turn for the worse. Just over one hour before qualifying began the team had to do a full engine swap.
Fredric stood closely by, watching and helping whenever he could, but of course the Papadakis Racing mechanics had it covered. They finished the swap and Fredric made his first qualifying run right on time.
From there he went toe-to-toe with every opponent he faced, eventually battling in the rain against some very worthy adversaries.
Fredric’s ability to control a drift car in the rain is unparalleled, so the slippery track surface gave him a distinct advantage going into the finals.
Now Fredric leads the rest of the field in the Pro championship by 76 points. He’s also 48 points ahead of the competition in the Formula Drift World championship.
Battles To RememberIn beating Chris Forsberg and Daigo Saito in the same event, from now on I will refer to Alec Hohnadell as the champion slayer.
This is only Alec’s second year in Formula Drift and he’s already making his mark. There are drivers who have been competing for a decade without a single podium.
One of the most controversial battles from the weekend was that between Matt Field and Pat Goodin. I was standing at the end of the judged course for this one, so I did not actually get to see the entire runs unfold. What I did see was the outcry on social media after the event. The judges explained the call in detail here, but how do you guys think it should have gone?
Before I talk about the battle that changed Formula Drift history, let’s talk about the two opponents.
This is Justin Pawlak’s first year as team owner and privateer, so he definitely has quite a bit to prove to his sponsors.
He struggled a bit early on in the season, but Justin has always had a stellar qualifying record, including a 1st place in Orlando. By next year I think he’ll be in top form again.
Tyler McQuarrie has been running his own team for a few years now. But it doesn’t seem like all that long ago that he left Falken as a factory driver – winning Irwindale as a exclamation point. If you think about it, he’s the last person to ever win Irwindale whose name isn’t Daigo Saito.
When I saw that the bracket had the potential for a McQuarrie versus Pawlak matching, I was looking forward to it.
I find that some of the most evenly-matched battles are when both competitors are running the same brand of tire. Regardless of car setup, the grip levels should be similar.
My initial impression of the incident, was that Tyler would have gone two tires off course, regardless of whether or not Justin hit him.
But after watching the in-car footage that Tyler released and taking a look at all the other video media again, I’m not so sure now.
There are so many possibilities to what could have happened. In Tyler’s eyes, he had no idea if he went two tires off or not – he just didn’t want Justin to pass him.
In Justin’s eyes, he saw that Tyler went off and figured it was the perfect opportunity to pass.
Tempers flared, but at the end of the day the two drivers agreed to disagree. What do you guys think the outcome should have been?
The next battle that had everyone talking was between Mad Mike Whiddett and Forrest Wang.
It was absolutely nuts to see how many fans Mike had in Seattle. He couldn’t even leave his pits without getting mobbed.
The weekend didn’t really start off on the right foot as he made contact with the wall during qualifying.
It was a bad draw for Forrest however, because Mike battled tooth and nail. They ended up going ‘One More Time’ twice.
In total they had six runs against each other. If that’s not a testament to the reliability of these drift cars, then I don’t know what is.
At the end of it, the cars were beaten and battered.
The battle took a toll on Mike. He said it was the hardest he has ever driven in his life.
Back in the trailer Mike put a quick call through to his fiancée, Toni, in New Zealand to let her know how things went in the Top 32. Of course, she had watched things unfold on the live stream.
Meanwhile, the team was hard at work buttoning up RADBUL for the Top 16 bracket, which ended up being one of the toughest battles Mike has faced this year.
Here, he would meet his Nitto Tire teammate and former FD champion, Vaughn Gittin Jr.
After a close battle, Vaughn moved on to the Top 8 bracket.
Vaughn has run into a few problems of his own this season and keeps taking himself out in the tandem battles. He didn’t have much luck in qualifying at Evergreen Speedway either, but it put him into an interesting bracket.
In a battle worthy of the finals, Vaughn was matched up with Odi Bakchis. The Mustang driver moved on, which of course didn’t do anything for Odi’s first championship hopes. It goes to show, qualifying high only puts you in a favorable position, but at the end of the day you could get a bad draw and lose it all early on.
Vaughn looked as if he was going to get back on the podium, but his clutch failed in his battle with Fredric Aasbø, so the win was gifted.
Drifters To Keep An Eye OnGeoff Stoneback came out swinging last year and in doing so earned FD’s coveted Rookie of the Year title.
His driving style is just so fun to watch, and he’s definitely not afraid to rub the wall.
He’s also a great character to be around in the paddock. Because life is not meant to be taken so seriously, right?
Geoff runs with the best of them and will be one driver to watch next year.
If I had to name the most understated driver in the series, it would be Kenny Moen.
While other drivers are marketing machines and great in front of the camera, Kenny is a drifter at heart.
His talents shine behind the wheel, but he largely flies under the radar – even though his car is bright yellow.
Of course, it’s easy to blend in when competing in a drift series with an S-chassis. His battle with Daigo Saito was epic to say the least.
Which brings me to Daigo. I know that he is a former champion, but he has fallen off in recent years due to car troubles. And then just when we thought he had sorted things out, he changed platforms completely. However, this past round in Seattle I think he finally got the R35 GT-R dialed in enough for a shot at the podium.
The last driver to watch is a rookie from Latvia.
Kristaps Bluss is a super-aggressive driver behind the wheel of his equally aggressive HGK Motorsport BMW.
The level of the build as well as the commitment from the HGK team really shows. While Kristaps does not have results to show for their efforts just yet, I have a feeling that will soon change.
What other up and coming drivers should you watch out for? How about the Formula Drift Pro2 field?
Some of the most impressive builds and heartfelt stories this year come from Formula Drift’s second tier championship.
I think Pro2 has become what Formula Drift once was back in 2008. In terms of skill level at least, because the car builds are just as crazy as those in the Pro field.
These guys and gals are the future of drifting. As more and more Pro drivers retire, it’s the Pro2 drivers who will take their places.
So next time you go out to a Formula Drift event, try to come a day earlier and check out what the Pro2 field has to offer. I guarantee you wont regret it.
And while you’re at it, judge all the runs in your head and boo the results if the calls don’t go your way. It’s more fun that way!

The JTP vs Mcquarrie was a shitshow. That's not how the big boys are supposed to act. JTP ran into Mcquarrie then passed him, as a driver in the chase position you shall never make contact with the lead car unless it's unavoidable. The inconsistent judging is make it hard for me to even take FD seriously. There have been numerous calls and decisions that are clearly not correct sometimes the rules are strictly enforced and other times they are swept under the rug. If FD wants to be considered a professional motorsport, then it needs to follow its own rules.

Goodin vs Field: I saw Pat with 2 tires off, judges disagree and say its one tire whatever. That mistake that led him to 2 tires off ruined his line into the turn and made him straighten up quite a bit. A bigger mistake than Fields and yes both had weak chase runs.
JTP and TQM: JTP won that battle rightly. MacQuarrie knew full well he was off in that section, even from watching the video posted I can see the difference in his line from his lead with Gushi. He tapped the wall before JTP bumped him (you can't see that in the vid though, can if you were there) and should've shut down or parked it right then and there or at least allowed JTP to complete the pass. He didn't, ran the inside and caused more contact around the next inner clip. At this point JTP should've slowed up and let him lead again, he's already made enough mistakes to lose the battle no point to risk damage/spinning etc. But competition flared and JTP just straight up PIT manoeuvred Tyler. I was expecting a NASCAR like brawl next. Great pic of MacQuarrie on the flat bed btw haha.
Forest and Mad Mike: close call for sure, the best drifting we saw until Aasbo ran Alec's door in the rain. I couldn't call it, though if I did I thought it was gonna be Forrest. It was actually a bit uncharacteristic for Forrest, he was twitchy and not as smooth as he normally is. Don't have a normal for Mike yet but he was saying in his pits what a handful the thing is to drive.
Vaughn and Mad Mike: I'm surprised you didn't touch on this further Larry, as the entire crowd (me included) boo'd this call when Vaughn advanced. I still don't understand it and haven't read a published ruling explaining this battle but Mike outdrove Vaughn the entire battle, especially in the chase. Calls like those make me lose faith in the judging of the sport. I'm pretty indifferent regarding Vaughn as a driver (in the spirit of full disclosure) but he seems to win on bad calls, his driving has been a bit lacklustre this year. Mike on the other hand came out swinging and pushed in that battle, made no 0's and still lost.
I don't get this new trend of crashing cars against the walls... It's a bit retard IMHO

Geoff Stoneback is definitely one to watch. His performance in Atlanta was on point, he's going to be a real contender very soon. One driver i really want to see do better is Kyle Mohan. His RX8 is beautiful and he's such an awesome guy. Talked with him the past two years at ATL and his fan interaction is awesome, letting people sit in his car, talking rotary with fans, and he even let some fans throw a gopro on his car for one of the events. FD needs to work on its judging but overall it's continually improving. Great feature as always!

Corbin you need to watch the video a few times again... Tyler hit the wall first. Then JTP hit Tyler, due to a lack of speed, and that pushed him off course. Not JTPs fault. Thats on Tyler. Its not rocket science but some people seem to try and make it that way.
PauEndless I don't really get it either. You've thousands of dollars worth of visual mods on these cars that many 'average' car enthusiasts would love to get their hands on. And the result is that they get scraped across concrete in pursuit of a few extra points.
I like the attention that drifting is getting, I'm just not sure if I approve of how the cost to break into the scene have skyrocketed. That and the aforementioned waste of custom parts.

@PauEndless, are you referring to drifting in general, or more specifically about wall taps within deifting.
If the former, there's as much contact with walls in NASCAR as there is in drifting.
If the later, wall taps and wall rides are as old as drifting itself. For as long. As people have been drifting, there's been people trying to get as close to obstacles as possible while drifting.
@RotaryNissan, I guess I understand your point, but it's not any different than any top level sport. Pro skaters destroy their equipment daily...same with snowboarders. How many dirt bikes do you think Travis Pastrana goes through in a year?
Racing isn't much different. Watch any form of wheel to wheel racing, you'll see that most of the field needs a significant amount of bodywork after the race. It's just part of the game.
rwreyford Kyle has been competing for a long time now, we definitely need more guys who enjoy fan interaction as much as he does.
teeson I remember the booing, and I know Mad Mikes team was up in arms about it. I wonder what the judges have to say about it.
Are those casters/rollers on the back of that s14?
RobbyChamblee nice one..remind me like frame slider
RobbyChamblee nice one..remind me like frame slider
When you're going 100+mph I don't think those little rollers are gonna save you. I can for the life of me figure out what thoes rollers are for while youre drifting. Would the mediator care to help us with this one??
ACSmith6589 Corbin I guess I wasn't very specific in my comment. I understand McQuarrie check'd up and pushed himself into the wall. JTP barely nudged him and that should have been then end of it. In all honestly it was legal by the unavoidable contact rule, but the events that followed promptly after were unprofessional at best. I wasn't trying to paint the picture that JTP was solely at fault. I was more or less trying to say that no one took the high road and they let their tempers control them. One could say this happens in all levels of motorsport, but thats no excuse and expressing anger with a 2000lb+ vehicle is far from responsible. I grew up at a local dirt track and shit like this would happen once every month. It's not how professionals should act especially with kids and teens idolizing this already fringe motorsport.

Twitch_6 Too add to your comment.. If anyone wants to see tons of fiberglass and sheet metal after an event. Just go to any local dirt oval race on Saturday night. If you really like to see bodies fall apart watch a Lucas Off Road or SCORE short course race. Those guy go through so much fiberglass it's insane

@Tom I'm sure they can help prevent the bumper from catching wall and ripping off. Also I don't think they take a direct 100mph blow when utilized. I could see them being very useful with some sort of damper installed(Kinda like a bump stop). Most wall taps are somewhat violent, but I've seen some top drivers execute them relatively smoothly.

Larry Chen teeson I totally agree on Vaughn VS Mad Mike. Personally I went into the event favoring Vaughn overall so that's saying something. Mike really brought the heat, top that off with the fun he brings into this sport (I know I know, drifting is not a motorsport) and I definitely walked out wishing he had moved on.
Hey Larry, where's your pics of the crowd man??? I feel like I threw you the biggest thumbs up when you climbed up the announcer's stand and shot everyone from there...
I for one would still like to see penalties handed out for JTP and TmQ. Love them to death, but they need to act like propfessionals, especially JTP...he's been in more hothead situations than I can count. ANY retaliatory behavior like that needs to be cut off, NOW. Before you get either injuries or a fight. Neither of which I've ever wanted to see in drifting.
They're clearly there to assist during wall taps and rides.
1. No one is wall riding at 100mph. 100mph is a very loose number that gets tossed around drifting, but is very rare on any FD track.
2. The rollers would reduce the friction between the bumper and the car. It's less likely that the car would "snag" on the wall with those rollers.
3. There's more than likely a collapsible sub-frame under the rear body work. Several FD drivers have been testing collapsible rear bumpers for a few years now, Odi being one of them. There was a few other people showing them off during pre season build frenzy...I think Forest Wang was one iirc. I know I remember seeing Chelsae Denofa say he used them, and he said they work and make a big difference.

Definitely agree. That kind of behaviour is a bad look for both FD and drifting in general. If they take no action against the drivers, it makes FD look completely amateur compared to other motorsports.
It also sets a horrible example for the many young people who FD markets themselves to.
Forgot to add:
As a fan of drifting and Motorsports in general, I almost find it insulting the way Tyler McQuarrie has gone on social media and tried to claim that his secondary contact with JTP was "incidental" and "unintentional"
Seriously man, how fucking stupid do you think we are???
Twitch_6 He did? Aw man, I had a lot of respect for Tyler, but that's just not cool. You don't air your laundry in public, no one ever looks good doing it.
Twitch_6 JTP and VG both have very hollow rear ends that can take about 8" of crush before touching any hard frame. Some people were saying it was semi-illegal having a foldable car. The rollers, I saw someone years ago (Hubinette?) had them as sort of a joke, using rollerblade wheels, but I don't think they whould honestly help.
But it is an intriguing idea. Imagine drifiting in 20 years, with cars having all-around rail bumpers like gokarts and rollers at the corners....cars basically wallriding the entire course with dragster motors and full slicks, active aero assist and rad lighting all over.....think TRON vs Shift Drifters at warp 9 lol

Jarod doesn't seem to like them and more importantly neither do the Sherrif's that attend...

RotaryNissan Corbin Twitch_6 I can't agree. Daigo Saito passing at 2mm of Ebisu wall is cool and great to see... A bunch of people trying to be Saito and crashing their cars against the wall multiple times to get attention and points is a bit lame. IMO again : )
Larry, thats so low of you to say that the judging can favour a driver when Aasbo wins. And that Fredric has "nothing" to say about that. Why you didnt say something like that when Vaughn JR totaled Fredric's car and the judge's rulling was unffair? I hope Vaughn JR clutch will fail every time when Aasbo is near him and I hope you Larry dont have any "new" articles on hold about that "awsome" back yard track of Vaugh JR.
And another question Larry if you are so kind - Why Vaughn's Ford is on the cover of your article if the winner is Fredric Aasbo and most experienced driver on this track is Chris Forsberg?

Larry Chen LoganHardwick teeson Larry, how swiftly you avoid questions about the unfair winning of Vaughn JR. Please stand up and say whats on your mind.
@pauendless, how do you think Daigo got to where he is? How many cars do you think Daigo has put into walls??
No one's "trying to be Daigo"...everyone, Daigo included, is just drifting their ass off. Like I said, people have been stuffing drift cars into walls for as long as people have been drifting. Why you think its new is a mystery to me.
teeson I agree with you that I was off track. It is very clear in the videos that I was off track but I can tell you in the car during the run it was not clear. In the drivers meeting the drivers asked FD if there was something they could put out there as a reference to see the line because its hard to see it when you are towards the end of the bank. JTP hit me hard enough on the first hit to bend my frame rail, so there is more going on in the cockpit to gather the car up than simply looking for the dull yellow line. After my run with Gushi in top 16 I had to ask my spotter how many tires I dropped off during my. Luckily it was only one then but its hard to tell. I think this is the only track where it is so hard to know how many tires you have dropped. All the other tracks have walls, dirt, or a bank you would run up on. Although I was clearly off after watching the video, Expecting drivers to stop when its so unclear in the cockpit is a little unreasonable.Remember judges watch video over and over to determine if a driver has dropped more than 2 tires. I get your point though with that.
Maybe because it's a sick photo?

rwreyford Would definitley love to see Kyle do better, it's sad to see the only other guy with a rotary in FD struggling to make it past the Top 32 at times
Twitch_6 You should see what Daigo's practice cars look like compared to his competition cars, hell look at any drifter's prac cars compared to their comp cars, the majority of practice cars get beat to shit because the drivers push their limits to improve their driving.
Twitch_6 greenroadster I don't even know what to say. Lol.
Corbin Tyler McQuarrie D1RGE EXE Twitch_6 Can't we all just get along?
LoganHardwick teeson I am sad I missed that. I love it when the crowd goes crazy.
Larry Chen Corbin ACSmith6589 I can tell you guys that my initial reatction from the photog wall on the corner (I was 30ft away max) was that JTP made contact with Tyler McQuarrie before tyler touched the wall. But then again it's all opinion and perspective. None of it really matters now.
GaelenN Corbin ACSmith6589 Tyler McQuarrie Nice shot!

I appreciate the reply, I and I understand not really being sure in the moment. It's easy for us to sit back and watch the video from 8 different angles and analyze it after the fact.
They used to have cones marking that line, but I guess it took too long to reset them after every lap. They got knocked over a lot.
But still contact with JTP was made and you knew you hit the wall hard, is that not enough to know that someone 0'd?
I think that FD as a whole needs to be more lenient with those kind of scenarios. They push to keep the schedule moving, where as a fan I'd rather see a restart and some good clean door-to-door action. And bring back the 3rd place battle; not just for Matt Fields sake haha

Larry is there any footage of this battle between Mad Mike and Forrest Wang?
Larry Chen Twitch_6 greenroadster No problem. Larry you are one of the best people in motorsport journalism to say: "Just let the photo do the talking."
