Video games aside, have you ever wondered what it looks and feels like to take a lap of Tokyo’s C1 loop? I’ve tried to give you different glimpses of it in the past, and you may remember the lap I did with Project GT-R last year. But a few weeks back, while I had the new BMW M3 for a short test drive, I thought I’d suction-mount a GoPro to the windscreen and go for a blast. I think that what I came up with looks pretty cool, so I thought I’d share.
If you know your way around Tokyo, you’ll probably notice that the loop I did is a little bit longer than the actual C1. That’s because I took off from Tatsumi PA, used part of Route 9 to connect to the C1 and then jumped on Rainbow Bridge to head back to the PA.
Anyway, let me know what you think! I always find driving the C1 strangely calming. Sometimes I’ll do three or four loops just for the hell of it, and it always puts a smile on my face. Switch to 1080p, hit play and enjoy…

Wow
Love this. Nice job Dino
Was that filmed with the M3's enhanced engine noise set to "Jean Michel Jarre"
Howrare Indeed, or at least the closest thing to it that wasn't licensed lol
RBJKT
where can I get the real time version ????

That's a great route -- great post! I've never been to the Tatsumi PA and still don't really understand the toll system-- do you have to pay a toll each "lap"? Or is it the same, regardless of when you get off?
I often make up reasons (usually it's unnecessary visits to Super Autobacs) to drive from Roppongi to Odaiba -- actually starting next to the sakura-lined street featured in your old post! It's a toll-free short drive that lets me take in views from the Rainbow Bridge, and a nice break from a week of riding subways.
This is awesome, I also love how you just casually overtake 3 Ferrari's haha.
What's the cost of this in tolls?
Hypnotic
what was your real speed here?

we see the movies and cartoons about cars going over 300, but i have a feeling its more close to 70

@Frozenstar I'd say it's running at 200-250% speed judging by the flash frequency of the indicator lights of the cars around Dino-san. Should give you an indication of how fast he was going
@Frozenstar i hope dino didn't do any afroduck-esque sheenanigans?

oh wait. afroduck was even stopping at stoplights.
Is that a Koenig Testarossa at around 1:14?
That truck from 0:20 to 0:31 droves you crazy Dino???
Nice video Dino! Ben fatto!
So I take it passing Ferraris aren't a rare occurrence?
And I hate to say it, but man I miss Tokyo Extreme Racer 0. They need to remake it.
Is it me or are others thinking that Japan is like 100 years ahead of every country on the planet?
That was almost hypnotizing. Great way to start my day.
If you have an xbox import tuner challenge is the updated version

Looks a lot narrower than in video games
cool video. i like the song too
Great video Dino. Music fit perfect. I would love to see the real time version and some engine noise thrown in a bit. Nicely done!
think you can give me a ride speedhunters_dino?
I drive similar to you, every opening I saw and was itching to take it, low and behold you made the same movement. Very immersive. Was this all edited to the same speed? No fluctuations?
What time of night was that? Need to be hitting that at 3am to avoid all that traffic! Looks like so much fun..
BT180 Was probably 10:30 pm. Lots of cars taking off from Tatsumi hence the interesting traffic
Merc Well you can do that on the C1, since there are exits on both sides of the road you can move around left and right. Don't do that if you aren't allowed to by law in your country. Some bits are more sped up that others, I was driving at the speed limit
Muzaffar Musa speedhunters_dino Sure!
The One Otaku Trust me you wouldn't! It's slow and boring haha 12 min or so
GTRSv Thank you!
LouisSoon It is pretty narrow, and no emergency lane
greenroadster For some things maybe...
EricSeanDelaney Those cars had just headed out from Tatsumi
superpern Typical J-truker
nugundam93 It was just at the speed limit, hence speeding it up so much. Plus I doubt anyone would want to sit through 12 min of that
DownDog 930 Yen
ImraanGallo Nowhere lol
Over here in Orlando FL we have the Airport circuit. Not as long as the C1 but its 3 miles of crazy fun! Just got to keep those radar detectors on.
I've gone over that bridge soooooooo many times in the Tokyo Xtreme Racer games and watching you take the same C1 route that in real life almost brought a tear to my eye. Thank you so much for posting this. I honestly have played through one of those games probably once every couple of years for the past decade. To me, Tokyo freeway driving > every other street driving. One day I will drive those freeways myself. One day...
Dino, you're a god among men. See you soon dude!
I just watch this video to entertain myself with a doze of JDM erratic Sunday drivers with a portion of semi-suicidal truckers...
Very serene. Thanks for sharing. I'm surprised that it's a two lane highway though. I guess I imagined great big freeways for a city like Tokyo.
smithadamb The shuto is not an expressway-grade road, it was never designed as such. More information can be found here:
http://motoringconbrio.com/2011/09/30/guest-contributor-skorj-on-the-shuto-kosoku-doro-shuto-metropolitan-expressway/
Expressways themselves are separate... For those interested in doing this, as Dino's clip is a pretty neat representation of how we run (though his M3 12 minutes is my S800 15 minutes), you can try this:

Neko.
smithadamb Japanese highways are pretty small compared to what we have in Europe and the US. Even the Tomei, it's 3-lanes (narrow ones at that) with absolutely no lane regulations (so everyone just hogs the outer lane - including trucks) and then after you pass Gotemba (Fuji area) it's 2-lanes all the way down to Osaka. They are only really 3 lanes where there is more congestions but in general Japan is very behind on its road network, not enough roads, poorly laid out with too many traffic lights and nothing done to solve the traffic situation. But that's how they like it, as according to the ministry of transport, driving slower = safer roads which is total bull crap if you actually look at the figures. But there is very little they can do now, the traffic light at every junction layout will never change, there is no space to work around it. They have literally shot themselves in the feet while the rest of the world tries to figure out ways to make traffic run smoother. They are trying to introduce 1-lane roundabouts out in the sticks in Gunma at the moment, but I wonder what that will lead to. Probably added deaths as generally, without a red-amber-green light telling them what to do, Japanese drivers aren't the quickest or smoothest at taking a decision out on the street.
As for the shuto, when they started building the first sections in the sixties they never really thought about how it would all expand and it looks like they just assumed that traffic for the next 50 years would just remained the same. Fail. So it's all 2-lanes, sometimes 1, with no emergency lane, so as soon as there's an accident it all clogs up as by law you are supposed to leave your car as it was after an accident (not that you can move it anywhere lol). So yeah, both good and bad...
TokyoCarGuy LOL
sean klingelhoefer See you soon my friend!
inspector_exacto Cool! Come over, rent a car and enjoy. Oh and bring 930 Yen lol
NickSilvia There are speed cameras on the C1 too, so pointless to drive fast these days. Plus there is traffic 24-7
speedhunters_dino smithadamb Sounds like Sydney.
One should watch this before sleep....and continue the journey in their dream
BT180 speedhunters_dino smithadamb No nothing could be as bad as Sydney/Australia, the cops here are a little better and the speed cameras set to be a little more humane
So no more highspeed runs from the speedfreaks, or they simply go without license plates on?
Is it true that the mountain racers can do their thing at night, without police harassing them?
speedhunters_dino DownDog
nice clip Dino looked fun too try
Getting blade runner vibes
Getting Blade runner vibes, Dino.
speedhunters_dino BT180 smithadamb Melbourne is just as bad as Sydney
DjaranJones speedhunters_dino BT180 smithadamb I'm sure it is
AdamBezzegh Well usually they do it in rural areas, so they aren't bothering anyone
damn those trucks! they cost me many wins on shutoko highway battle. good times. I must have played through the dreamcast version through ps2. good times.
I recognize every turn thanks to the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series.
I used to run the I-270 loop in Columbus, OH as a kid. Perfect for some peace and quiet as an angry teen lol. Bonus, it doesn't have speed cameras and the cops are usually pretty lax, 90mph or 130kph rarely got me in trouble.
V35 me too!! always wandering what it feels like, thanks to this video
Yeah miata! In my B-series'd CRX i'd run a loop around my house in the farmland. One night i did 90mph in a 45 past a brand new charger cop.....needless to say i quit doing that loop haha
