The Drifting Surfer: <br />Matt Powers Does A 360

While fan-favorite Matt Powers might be sitting out of Formula D competition this year, he certainly hasn’t given up on drifting. Not by any means! This past weekend, while he was out at Willow Springs International Raceway for a Top Drift event, Matt pulled off something he’d been wanting to do for a while: a mid-drift 360-degree spin on Horsethief Mile. Filming the trick was our good friend Will Roegge of Keep Drifting Fun, who was riding shotgun in a certain orange 240Z that had been set up as the camera car.

This folks, is a man who’s truly keeping drifting fun, in every sense of the word.

6

Back to having fun behind the wheel again is see, nice one Mattycakes!

7

Felt like I was watching an action movie

8

Grosse maitrise bravo !!!

9

In competition is that a DQ or would he get an instant 10 (assuming he hit the clipping points)

10

And THAT is one of the reasons why Matt Powers is my favorite in the pro circuit.

11

That looked really cool and sound's even better. The S14 is still one of the greatest drift cars ever.

12

Fuck...

13

and so smooth

Seeking Perfection

I was watching this during lunch break and one brosef passing by the restaurant suddenly stopped and screamed to me ''B-B-Bruh, hell yeah bruh!''

Too bad Matt is not a part of FD. Mad Mike and Mattley competing @ FD while being a part of team NFS was one of the best decisions SH ever made. I cannot relate to any of your new drivers since then.

15

I was startled when that V8 opened up!

16

@MarbMack I was talking about this yesterday. As I understand the rules it would be considered a loss of drift and a 0 for that run. also, you could probably only pull that off as a chase driver, which would put you a considerable distance away from the lead driver. But during single run qualifying it might get you a 10?
anyone else have some thoughts on this?

17

Larry,
your brake pads are trying to tell you to replace them at 0:02.

18

nickmmele TECHNICALLY, according to FD rules, a "loss of drift" is when the driver straightens their wheel and is not transitioning. His wheel is turned the entire way through, so its not a loss necessarily a loss of drift. Also, reverse entries, to my knowledge, are legal in FD (perhaps only in qualifying? - the only time I really see them is in Atlanta by Essa), so the fact that the back end is further up than the front end at a certain point during the spin shouldn't be a problem. I would assume the judges would count it as spinning out, though, which is indeed a 0.

Like you said, I don't really think someone would be able to get away with this in a tandem competition, though. It would be too much of a hazard to other drivers. I do think it would be cool to see something like this in qualifying, though. Sure, the judges would still give them a 0 and ruin the fun, but the crowd would go crazy, that's for sure.

19

Cool, now call up Sam Hubinette and do it tandem.

20

nickmmele  They are racing pads, they always squeal. Even when they were brand new.

21

Thanks to Charlie at Justdrift for letting us film all day.  Check out Justdrift.com for the next event.

22

Matts a good guy and has done a ton of good stuff for the sport.

23

Larry Chen nickmmele  ALWAYS. I can vouch for that squealing.

24

Fearedisx nickmmele  I don't think it would count as spinning out, because he regained control of the car. I think spinning out is only when you come to a stop.

25

sexy

26

Larry Chen nickmmele  In that case, it's your brake pads telling you they aren't hot enough ;)

27

Legend. Good to see that stunt school stuff is paying off!

28

Someone needs a softer BOV spring!...took me a second to realize it was ole orange bang in chase

29

Ha! Yeah I've used that excise before too larry, but we will take your word for it ;)

@Race Bays Fearedisx nickmmele  As soon as the car spins more than 180 degrees I would say it would be counted as a spin, even if they did re-gain control

31

@Mike Jones  Seems ok to me :D

32

sean klingelhoefer Trust me when I say it spots squealing while driving CW13 Buttonwillow.

33

Meh, Aaltonen.

34

I know many people are saying there are too many V8 swaps (and they probably have a point), but I just don't get bored of THAT sound. Superb!

Oh yeah, and great driving as well! ;)

35

Want to see a real spin? Try it at over 150 mph

37

@Kawaii Hachiroku  he understeered first.

GueroDeported

Sick! They should add drifting to X Games Austin (june 5-8). They added SST and dirt bmx this year! It's at Circuit of the Americas!

39

i have seen it been on a 86 on a public road in a mountain pass. cool tho

Larry Chen  Fair enough, still cool to see it done on a pass with a little 4AG ^.^ Cheers!
