I'm currently taking a much needed 2 week holiday in New Zealand, to get charged up for what is looking to be a very busy and exciting 2009…. I've traded in the dark and damp of Vancouver winter for high summer, NZ style!…. While I'm doing my best not to think about work, it would be a bit of a waste while I'm in New Zealand not to Speedhunt in what is a truly world class automotive scene. People are absolutely crazy about cars in this country!
So I'm going to take a day away from my little cottage here, outside of Nelson on the South Island, and fly up to Auckland this Saturday to check out one of the biggest automotive events of the year in NZ: the "V" 4 & Rotary Nationals. I'm pretty excited to see what the Kiwi tuning and rotary scene looks like up close and personal. I'm also going bring up a stack of Speedhunters stickers for any of our New Zealand readers who want to rep us on their cars. Just look out for the hat and I'll pass your a sticker.

But can I just say, please dont judge our import scene by the 4 & rotary nationals as I feel its just scratching the surface! A large amount of our best engineered/built cars are found at the race track! But enjoy the show.

Much like the US, you'll see a lot of boring bad-taste show cars at the 4's & Rotors, but there should be a few nice surprises in there. One thing I suggest you do is hunt down the boys from C's Garage (http://csgarage.wordpress.com/) cos they got the best S chassis Nissan's in the land

The OSCA series also tends to have some pretty cool rotaries in it as well.

Be prepared to see a lot of chrome on the rotary's, the rotary community only seems to like about 3 wheel designs lol.
It is a shame that you arnt in the country a little longer, a group of us are having a trackday Feb 10th at taupo international raceway, you would be more than welcome to come along!!
Rod, I think you'll be impressed with the drag racing scene in New Zealand. There are some seriously extreme cars over here and as you said "world class". Pity I probably wont make it to the event...argh.

If you want to really see what the NZ car scene is like come down to the south island 4 and rotary nationals. Then go out in some sort of car around the avenues that night, what you see will blow you away!

Drift Monkey I'm in Upper Moutere... just up the road from you... I am seeing lots of tire marks on the roads around here!.... I also saw 2x drift style street cars in Richmond on the way up from the airport to here when I arrived last Sunday....
I also noticed an R33 attached to a tree on the way in to Richmond the other day! You know anything about that?

4&rotary is all okay but if you have enough time, please make it to some other real race events in nz thats coming up soon.
Will try hard to find you and get that 'spdhunter' stickers somehow..on that day.
I live in Auckland, but I've never been to a 4 & Rotary nat show, just because most of the cars are only trailer queens with flashy paint and skinny chrome wheels (maybe it's changed recently), which isn't my taste (which is more drift style). Welcome to NZ anyway, and hopefully you actually see some cars that make you whip out the camera and take shots of.
Rod, I heard the was a crash but I don't know the circumstances behind it. I was at the pub last Friday watching all the cars assembling in a carpark across the road before they went to the skids, so was more than likely one of those idiots.
Yea there seems to be a few drift-styled Nissans hanging round here, more often than not they are A31 Cefiros or R32 skylines though (we are inundated with the damn things over here) but occasionally there is a nicely done one or a Silvia floating round.
The Moutere highway (between Richmond and Motueka via the Moutere) is an awesome piece of road, but usually you get slowed up by someone who's scared of corners
