Event>>goodwood Festival Of Speed: Prologue

Back in the days when we all knew our place there was a fixed social season in London, where all true gentlemen would gather, “The Right Crowd and no Crowding”

Many of the events on the season were sporting in nature, Royal Ascot, the Boat Race, Wimbledon, Cowes Week, Henley Regatta etc. etc. After the demise of Brooklands, motorsport was not really represented in this social whirl, a Formula One Grand Prix at the charmless Silverstone airfield could not cut mustard.

So some 16 years ago Lord March, owner of the Goodwood Estate, spotted a gap in the market and with the Festival of Speed created a celebration of things that go fast or as they put it “automotive culture”.

It was a simple idea that was well executed well and it has proved extremely popular, almost too popular according to some of the regulars.

So here we are in July with the Festival happening this coming weekend, so of course the rain is falling……….and is scheduled to continue till Monday……the delights of an English summer……

Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun,
If the sun don't come, you get a tan from
Standing in the English rain

As the Beatles put it.

OK what is there to keep us all amused for three days?

Well something for every taste………cars, stars, stars and cars………

….actually cars includes almost every form of motorised transport, road cars, supercars, open wheelers, motorbikes. And of course there is the Hill Climb……..will the record go this year or will the weather defeat the efforts of the racers?

Each Festival has a theme set for it and in 2008 it’s “Hawthorne to Hamiltion” saluting the 50th anniversary of Britain’s first Formula One World Champion and acknowledging the popularity of the current title contender.  There will be six current F1 teams represented and plenty of the more classical cars and drivers……..so if F1 floats your boat there will be something for you.

Plus……….access will be at levels only dreamed of by those who actually pay to go Grand Prix………at Silverstone the public are not allowed to reach the interior of the track, reserved for VIPs and The Paddock Club and of course the teams and drivers. At Goodwood you might get to actually touch Lew-is. Yes, fresh from pulverising the opposition last weekend he will be there with Jenson Button and Sebastian Bourdais from the current F1 grid. Legends from past who are due to make an appearance include Sir John Surtees, Sir Stirling Moss (wouldn’t be Goodwood without him), Damon Hill, John Watson and Johnny Herbert.

For those of us not bothered about F1 in its current incarnation there are plenty of other attractions………..the Goodwood Forest Rally special stage with over 40 cars in action plus a special tribute display to the late Colin McRae.

The two wheel fraternity is also fully represented from TT roadsters such as John McGuinness to legends of the circuits such as Mick Doohan and Carl Fogerty.

Sportscars will have its champions on display too with Allan McNish and Nic Minassian joining Derek Bell and Brian Redman.

Jostling for attention with all this will be flypasts of the Airbus A380, the Red Arrows and located on the oldest cricket pitch in the world will be a collection of top fuel dragsters.

For those who prefer road car exotica there will be a Super Car Rally and static exhibitions with Cartier sponsored “Style et Luxe” including a bunch of 007 James Bond cars.

So something exclusively for everyone………..

Editor Rod spotted an early Nissan that he reckons that we should do a piece on…………..anyone else got requests?

I'll make some attempt to keep you readers happy.

Let us know who runs fastest on each day?

So many cars will putt down the "driveway" and a bunch will push. I'd be curious to see who push's the hardest.

Keep your eye out for interesting happenings like last year when the Caparo T1 got it's throttle stuck.

Other than that, maybe jjust treat it like a race with a party all around it...

Thanks for covering, Parker=jealous.

I was offered the chance to go to this as part of my work but another commitment stopped me :(

I went to the Goodwood Revival event a few years ago and I was blown away. The sight of a dozen Ferrari 250GTOs and other GT cars from that era blasting past in a race has got to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

The festival is amazing, I will go next year if i get the chance =)

3

Very nice post,

You should see the other car from the owner of the 'C10' ;)

4

I can't wait for the full story.

5

that Box skyline looks awsome, nice write up and get some good coverage for us.

6

Seeing as you asked for requests, any chamnce of the Driftworks S15 and the Autosportif Impreza (both in the uk)

7

The FoS is simply awesome. Prior to leaving the UK, I never missed the event and luckily living near by I would go for two days. Best car event of the year ever year for me.

FoS back in 1997 was actually the second date for my now wife!!! Rained all day and couldnt find the car, because it was covered with mud!

I am very jealous of Mr Brooks and now depressed!

At least it might be sunny here in Vancouver

Parkergc8 - not all the runs are timed. many are demo runs

8

Rod's right, that feature would be awesome. Jeroen, doesn't that owner also have a maroon 240ZG?

9

Yes, feature the skyline!!!

10

OK guys it is ten before six this morning...........and no rain! yet................

I will do my best to get to the Skyline and prepare the material for a feature.

"Driftworks S15 and the Autosportif Impreza",,,,,better ask Rod, our sainted editor.

Parkergc8....if someone breaks the record it will most likely happen on Sunday.............I do not intend to spend time in the media centre so times may be better located on the Goodwood site.........time spent looking at a screen is time lost from shooting.

OK my lift will be here soon....................later

Came down the hill in Alan's KPGC10 GTR, balanced precariously on the passenger seat that isn't really a seat, just a representation of one!

John: Are you going to go to the Revival press day when it comes around? Give me a shout be good to meet one of the people behind Speedhunters :)

12

Damn, that looks too good an event to miss! Well, too bad I'm from another part of the world and really can't go join it :(

13

Could we see a couple pics of the dragsters? I wish I could be there, Goodwood is on top of my list of things to definitely see before I die.

14

Hi John, I would like to see some more pics of the Mazda Furai, I just saw some pics and I know it's there ;)

15

As long as you're open to requests I'd love to see a couple more pix of the Group B rally cars!

16

OK

5.12am and just up to head back to Goodwood.

I am sending the sainted editor a few shots to keep us going...............

No Box Skyline...........

There are so many people around it becomes difficult to get and shots but I will do my best.

OK............up and at 'em

I'm sooo hooked on this site..every single article is intense..oh and john, if you could post up more pics of the group B cars that would be sweet..i have a little thing for delta's hehe..thanks dude!!

18

Thanks for the nice pics of my 1971 KPGC10 Skyline GT-R.

To clarify a little: The car was invited to the Goodwood Festival of Speed Press Day as a guest of Nissan Motors GB Ltd, and as part of their promotion of the new R35 GT-R. Unfortunately - despite taking part in the Press Day - the car was not part of their plans for the actual Goodwood Festival of Speed event that took place this weekend.

I might take the car to a few more UK events this year though, so hopefully a few more people might be able to get a look at it soon..........
