SO FWD IS BORING, HUH?

Front wheel drive or wrong wheel drive as some like to sneer, has long been the undeserved victim of much criticism. Understeer, torque steer etc. are the usual phrases thrown about, along with lines like ‘the front wheels are for steering only’. I can probably guess however that the people who utter this nonsense have never had the privilege of seeing what a sorted FWD car is capable of…

On that note, let me introduce you to Jean Ragnotti. A Monte Carlo and Tour de Corse winner, Ragnotti is not only a Group B veteran but also has the rather impressive moniker of ‘God on Tarmac’. He may not have the infamy of his fellow countryman, monsieur Loeb, but make no mistake that the man is magic behind the wheel of a car. This video pays tribute to some of his best moments behind the wheel of his Renault Clio Maxi, the Group A7K 250+BHP two litre naturally aspirated and front wheel drive monster.

If you’ve never experienced Jeannot before, you’re in for a treat. My personal favourite moment comes at around the 4m10s mark. If ever there was a perfect example of #MAXIMUMATTACK…

THE NEW GODZILLA?

It’s been a long wait for Nissan and even a longer wait for racing fans, but we’re getting closer and closer to finally watching the Japanese manufacturer take on Ford and Holden in their own backyard once more. With the pre-season test day taking place this Saturday, followed by the Adelaide Clipsal 500 a little under two weeks later we can finally see if the Altima will live up to the legacy of the Skyline GT-R. So what do we need right now? That’s right, a MONTAGE.

RALLY SWEDEN UNINTERRUPTED ON FILM

There seems to be a lot more positive energy around the WRC these days – perhaps it’s down to the immediate success of the new Volkswagen Motorsport Polo WRC or with the semi-retirement of Loeb which throws open the title race for the first time in nearly a decade [...]

A 956 & THE OLD MULSANNE

Productivity is vastly overrated. I’ve been trying to put together the next #IAMTHESPEEDHUNTER post for the last couple of hours, but in-between sorting through the hundreds of submissions, I keep finding myself wandering onto YouTube seeking out another fix of speed.

If I’ve seen this video once, I must have seen it a hundred times since I was a kid on a VHS my father had (and still has). I wasn’t even alive when Derek Bell piloted his 956 down the old Mulsanne straight (sans-chicanes of course) but that hasn’t stopped me trying to relive the moment on a regular basis. Prepare for your eyes to bleed as Bell absorbs all 3.7 miles of the famous Le Mans straightaway in little over a minute.

THE ROAD TO GATEBIL 2012

It’s been a little over a month now, but I just can’t seem to get the experience I had at Gatebil out of my head, especially when cool videos from the event keep popping up on the internet! This is one that really caught my eye, chronicling the long drive that Russian drifter Maxim Tvardovskiy and his team, including a bear, had to undertake to make it to Rudskogen. It was obviously all worth it once they got there. Hit play and enjoy…

THE CRAZIEST TALBOT SUNBEAM YOU’LL SEE TODAY

THE CRAZIEST TALBOT SUNBEAM YOU’LL SEE TODAY

Okay, I’ll admit that this may not be the cleanest car we’ve ever spotlighted, but it certainly has its charm. For those of you unfamiliar with the Talbot Sunbeam, it’s a small three door hatch which briefly lived in Europe during the late seventies and early eighties. The Sunbeam Lotus edition, which is what this car was originally, was the hot hatch version and featured a 2.2 Lotus 16valve slant 4 engine in the standard production car.

WRT’S WET WEEKEND IN GT1

WRT have produced another high quality video, this one documenting their difficult weekend at the second round of the 2012 World GT1 Championship. Alongside the highs, you have to deal with the lows: the team suffered a reversal of fortunes at their home track of Zolder in Belgium after their blitzing of both races in France last month. Variable weather conditions made things even more difficult at a track which is challenging enough in the dry. Narrow and fast, with vicious chicanes, Zolder looked like a skating rink in the wet.
