I can hear Robbie Longley’s Mazda wagon, as I’m sure anyone else in a couple of miles radius can too, but I can’t see it. A few seconds ago he had flicked the switch marked LINE LOCK and stepped on the gas. Now all I see is white, and all I can taste is the [...]
I’ve always been fascinated with the love our antipodean friends seem to have for the rotary engine. It’s not so much a passing interest, oh no, they’ve developed quite the affliction with the buzzing Wankel. Our first trip to Australia in 2010 is where we got our initial exposure of all things rotary, when we [...]
When it comes to rotary tuning, the exploits of two countries at the bottom of the world need little introduction. For as long as I can remember the Australasian region has been home to some of the fastest, loudest, wildest and most innovative rotary-powered vehicles on the face of the planet, and there are no [...]
Big engines and big cars are kind of obvious huh? Don’t get me wrong, I love a good V8 and have owned more than a few. An Audi R8 with that V10 sat behind my head? All day, every day my friend. Yet if I’m honest I think my ego gets in the way sometimes. [...]
I will pick up the Nostalgic 2 Days coverage with another Spotlight-o-rama and after the slightly too Nissan oriented previous one, I thought I should probably mix it up a little (mind you 65% of the cars at the show were Nissans!). I’m a sucker for older Toyota Crowns, no matter what body shape, but [...]
It’s a long time ago now, but I can still remember the very first 4&Rotary Nationals drag day. It happened in October 1998, and straight away you could tell from the turnout that the organizer was on to something big. It only took couple of years to find traction, and by the early ’00s it wasn’t [...]
When we decided to do this short 80′s theme I knew just the car I wanted to post up. I featured this orange FC3S a while back for a magazine, but despite the fact that some of our US readers might have seen it in print, I thought it would be a pity not to [...]
Hello, my name is Taryn. You might remember me from my guest blog post that was featured last year during the Speedhunters Miata Celebration Week. This year the team at Speedhunters have asked me to come back and share some more automotive related stories with you, so I thought I’d start today by giving you [...]
We have seen quite a few interesting Roasters over the last day, but as our themed 48-hours dedicated to Japan’s little sports car continues I wanted to chime in and bring you a little selection from the land of the rising sun. The key to the Roadster’s success over the last two decades is due [...]
There’s little wonder that so many people look back on the mid ’80s as the golden era of rallying. Group B not only reinvented the sport from a technical standpoint, but it re-popularized it too. For a while, the World Rally Championship was bigger than Formula 1. During those crazy years from 1983 to 1986, [...]
It’s time to finish off our coverage from the 2012 Brisbane Jamboree, an event that for many memorable moments will be stuck in my mind for a long time to come. Getting to witness – at eyebrow frying range – just how far the Australian four, six and rotary drag racing scene has progressed since [...]
As the long and seemingly unrelenting summer in Japan comes to an end, there is one event that for a few years now has marked the seasonal transition for me. I am of course talking of the Roadster & Rotary Meeting, held every September at the beautiful Sendai Hi-land Circuit, a celebration of all the [...]
Hey fellow Speedhunters! After the madness that was Gatebil, it would have been nice to have had some time to recover, but as usual here at MCNSPORT we’ve been flat out! The D-Mac86 has taken priority in the shop in order to get it ready for competition at the imminent Trax festival at the famous [...]
Rotary engines are bit like automotive Lego in that you can seemingly attach as many rotors together as you want.
OK, it’s not quite that simple but rotary builders have come up with some truly bonkers setups over the years. The latest comes from New Zealand’s Pulse Performance Race Engineering who has put together a six-rotor monster engine known as the 6B. A few days ago the mad men at PPRE released this video clip showing the 6B as its fired up for the first time. Needless to say, the sounds this thing makes are absolutely insane.
This particular motor is being built for use in an old RX-4 and the company even plans to begin selling 6Bs to the public soon.
With all of the rotary lovin’ happening over the last couple of days on Speedhunters, I thought I would go ahead and make a contribution of my own. While at the Bayline Meet last weekend I spotted a peculiar looking vehicle tucked away at the corner of the parking lot. I squinted my eyes, and indeed it was a Chevrolet Vega. Naturally, I wondered what GM’s economy car from the ’70s was doing at a retro Japanese car meet, so I went in for a closer look.
