Now that the big gravel parking lot next to the space used to hold the Street Car Nationals has been fully resurfaced, we might as well think of it as the show’s annex, such is the selection of cars that you can run across. About an hour before the show was due to end I [...]
Although it’s something that I’d love to be able to do, there is literally no way you could shoot every single car at the Mooneyes Street Car Nationals before the event closes at 3pm. So this year – like every year – it was all about being selective and concentrating on the cars that exhibited [...]
While Daigo Saito brought a big taste of Japanese drift style to Formula Drift in the United States, back in his homeland he’s looking to spread the gospel of of big power American drift style. Not only is he building a Dodge Viper for Japanese competition, but he also purchased Sam Hubinette’s ex-FD Dodge Challenger, which can be seen here undergoing some testing at Ebisu Circuit.
I’m not sure what Daigo’s hardcore fanboys think of this, but I think it’s pretty cool to see him bringing him some international influence to Japan.
Seeing this past Sunday was the final Battle Evome of the year that I will be covering, this will pretty much wrap up the first-half of the JDM time attack season coverage, at least at this sort of level. However, there will always be plenty more grip event at tracks like Tsukuba, Honjo and Sodegaura [...]
To mix things up a little for our Tokyo Auto Salon coverage we thought we’d combine up a few of our spotlights together and bring you a spotlight-o-rama post from myself, Mike and Sean. We all chose two cars that stood out to us as we walked the halls of the Makuhari Messe for two [...]
It’s right back at Daikoku PA now for a final look at the other day’s supercar gathering. During the few hours that I was there I literally never stopped walking around, because as cars left, more kept coming in. By around lunch time the lot was so full that a many were forced to park [...]
It’s time to break away once more from our Speedhunters Awards voting and year in review stories for the final #FeatureThis Car Spotlight of the year. Today’s submission comes from Joshua Mead of South Bend, Indiana. Josh is the proud of owner of this 1973 Mitsubishi Galant Station Wagon, or Dodge Colt as it was [...]
Time to take a look at a final selection of cars from this year’s Mooneyes Hot Rod & Custom Show, an event that year after year not only continues to get better, but defines how seriously and passionately the Japanese take this scene. I’ve kept the best American rides I came across for this last [...]
I’m often asked what I like most about being a Speedhunter. There are many answers to that question, but naturally it’s the constant exposure to cars that comes to mind first. My colleagues and I spend most of our waking moments (and many of our sleeping ones) thinking about cars. We never stop thinking about photographing them, driving them, building them, or writing about them. On top of that, what I like most is that we aren’t locked into one particular genre or style of car.
As I mentioned during my main event coverage, Bonneville Speed Week is full of stories. Stories about racers pushing their cars to the absolute limit across the salt flats, late night campfires full of stories from the past, and the stories of the journey to the salt itself. It’s more than an auto race and it’s more than a car show – Bonneville is a pilgrimage. Making the trip to the salt in a rental car or a brand new pickup truck with the air conditioning and satellite radio blasting is one thing, but many choose come to Bonneville in their hand-built Hot Rods. These cars don’t come to compete, but they have become just as an important and memorable part of Speed Week as the streamliners that shoot across the salt going hundreds of miles an hour.
Right it’s time to get cycling again now as I finish up my ride along Kanpachi-dori in Tokyo, checking out the cool shops, dealers and anything car related that I came across. I’m very happy to see how well the first part went down, it’s great that a lot of you guys out there want [...]
We interrupt your regularly scheduled 8-6 day stories to bring you some news from the American Le Mans series. On Saturday thousands of spectators were on hand at a very hot and humid Mid Ohio to witness one of the most highly anticipated racing car debuts in recent memory – the return of the Dodge [...]
There’s no question that X Games does a phenomenal job promoting its athletes, oftentimes elevating them to household name celebrity status. Over the years countless individuals have been morphed into charismatic icons, all under watch of the public eye. Since adding Rallycross to its calender in 2006, X Games has undoubtedly pumped some much-needed interest [...]
I think it’s fair to say that it’s easy for us Speedhunters to became jaded when it comes to automobiles. After all, we spend our days shooting amazing events, getting up close with some of the world’s most exciting cars, and scouting out incredible build projects from across the web. We live the life of automotive overindulgence – and we love it.
Anyone can drive in a straight line, but to go for a 200mph-plus run over one mile requires nerves of steel and a ride that has enough power to tow a jumbo jet.
