I’ll be honest: when I was a kid, I had absolutely no clue where life would take me. I did have dreams, however, and as I’ve mentioned before I can still remember the first time I watched Days of Thunder back in the ’90s. Fifteen years later, I am driving for multiple and very iconic teams [...]
In my opinion, Daigo Saito exploding onto the Formula Drift scene in 2012 was the greatest thing to happen in the world of drifting in recent years. I have known Saito since 2009, but seeing him school everyone in the art of tandem and smoke out every single FD track across the US was incredible. [...]
After what’s felt like an age, the professional drift season in North America has officially kicked off with round one of Formula Drift in Long Beach. I’ve come to miss the smell of tire smoke and picking bits and pieces of drift car out of my hair, but I sure got my fill of it [...]
While Daigo Saito brought a big taste of Japanese drift style to Formula Drift in the United States, back in his homeland he’s looking to spread the gospel of of big power American drift style. Not only is he building a Dodge Viper for Japanese competition, but he also purchased Sam Hubinette’s ex-FD Dodge Challenger, which can be seen here undergoing some testing at Ebisu Circuit.
I’m not sure what Daigo’s hardcore fanboys think of this, but I think it’s pretty cool to see him bringing him some international influence to Japan.
We’ve had a whole lot of awards for cars so far in the 2012 Speedhunters Awards. Racers, street cars, modifieds, crazy builds… So much for the metal: what every car needs is a driver. The proverbial nut behind the wheel. 2012 has been a rich season, with down-to-the-wire fights in most of the major championships. [...]
As we spend the month looking back on the year that was 2012, there is one event that’s generated quite a lot of discussion in our little world. That would be Daigo Saito’s arrival as a Formula Drift competitor and his subsequent championship winning season. For the first in my new series of editorial articles [...]
Next up in the Speedhunters Awards for 2012 is the opportunity to vote for your favourite competition car of the year. We have a selection of old and new to choose from which are competing around the globe, though all are pushing the boundaries of their respective series. The fastest, the meanest, the most revolutionary [...]
The Indonesian round of the Formula D Asia series already seems like a distant memory, despite it being only last month. But with the constant new things we cover here at Speedhunters it’s often nice to step back, hit play and relive past events we have attended. That is exactly what I just did this morning, after coming across this awesome video from Ryan Davis at Yaer Productions. Make sure you hit play and check it out!
The New Zealand drift community is getting pretty excited right now, and for good reason. This coming weekend an entire city block in downtown Auckland will be shut down and transformed into a tarmac playground for a bunch of Kiwi drifters and three Formula Drift internationals. The cause: Red Bull Drift Shifters. The event is [...]
After a rather impressive debut at the last round of the Formula D Asian series in Jakarta, Fredric has had a little time to think about what was a great and fun weekend for all involved. I thought I’d ask him a few questions about his time in Indonesia, driving one of the cars that [...]
After an exciting final, the tire smoke has settled and the Formula D Asian series has a new champion, Daigo Saito. On my way back home to Tokyo I had time to reflect on the time I have spent in Jakarta covering my very first Formula D round. Despite the series being still in its [...]
Drifting is a sport I have seen grow from small local events, and hit it big, becoming an internationally recognized form of racing. I spent close to ten years covering D1 in Japan, and I have seen it all unfold in front of my eyes, observing it blossom into the freshest form of motorsport out [...]
Why do I love drifting? Because of events like Formula Drift Vegas. It was epic to say the least. There was just so much to take in and everything you could want as a fan. There were huge upsets and some of the closest, most intense battles I have ever seen. I will try to convey [...]
The Formula Drift Asia series recently made its stop in Singapore and our friend Cheryl Tay was there to capture the action, which she was nice enough to share with us.
Daigo Saito has just taken first place at Formula Drift round three, Palm Beach International Raceway; a victory that was really only a matter of time. On paper, he may a rookie to American competition, but in reality, he’s a well-seasoned multiple drift champion. From D1GP to the Asian FD Series, he knows how to [...]
