88 laps and 15 hours might not sound right for a 24-hour race, but combine the Nordschliefe and the horrific conditions we’ve had this weekend and it’s a miracle that many were completed… The #9 Black Falcon Mecedes-Benz SLS AMG crossed the line at 5pm to take the three-pointed star’s first win at the Nürburgring [...]
No matter how many times I attend the Mooneyes Street Car Nationals, I never quite get over the visual impact the event creates on the streets of Tokyo’s Odaiba neighborhood. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t into customs or hot rods, the sight that these cars collectively create is simply breathtaking. Throw in an ever-expanding [...]
Darkness fell at the Nürburgring – and so did the rain. Rain so hard that even this race – the toughest of the tough – had to be called to a temporary halt because of the absolutely appalling conditions. Driving on the Nordschleife in the dry is hard enough, but with a track better described [...]
We’re eight hours into the ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24 Hours and the rain is relentlessly lashing down. The race has been stopped for almost two hours now, neutralised under red flag conditions. The cars have been parked up in the pit-lane, whilst the crews go into hibernation awaiting announcement of a possible restart. The conditions [...]
This was the scene with just 10 minutes to go before the start of the 2013 Nürburgring 24 Hours, as the leading GT3s headed the huge field on their slow formation lap. Ahead of them, a hard day of racing around the most fearsome track in the world. Ominous spots of rain began to fall [...]
There’s less than one hour to go before the 2013 Nürburgring 24 Hours, and Speedhunters have just had the ride of a lifetime. We’ve been riding the Nordschleife in a Bilstein-liveried Vantage following no less than James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, as part of a 100 car parade around the Nordschleife to celebrate the centenary [...]
Heat Treatments Limited Racing – the New Zealand team behind the world’s quickest Skyline GT-R – have rewritten the record books once again. At Willowbank Raceway in Queensland, Australia on Saturday, driver Reece McGregor pointed the HTL Racing BNR32 to a 7.455 at 193.27mph (311km/h) pass before going 7.412 at the same trap speed. It’s been exactly a year since the legendary GT-R set its last PB – that run was a 7.531 at 185.26mph (298.14km/h) at the very same Willowbank Sportsman pre-FUCHS Winternationals meet – so cracking into the 7.40s (and very nearly the 7.30s!) is a great accomplishment. We can’t wait to see what the team can do at the 2013 Winternats in a few weeks time! In the meantime, check out some video of the 7.45 and 7.41 passes from the guys at DragImportMedia.
Frank Stippler has put the Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra on pole for the 2013 ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24 Hours race. The running order for the Top 40 qualifying session was drawn by lottery after the combined field of 176 cars had completed six hours out on track. The cars were sent out at short intervals to make their two qualifying runs. Stippler crossed the line to post a lap time of 8m17.212s to blitz pole, while the second placed Aston Martin Vantage GT3 was over a second back in the hands of ex-F1 driver Pedro Lamy. The 24-hour-long race is due to begin at 5.00pm Sunday Nürburg time (Sunday 11.00am PST).
Two guys. Four boots. Four cameras. Four miles. No car. It’s a slightly different premise from the regular Dream Drive features that we have here on Speedhunters, but for the opening story of our coverage from the 2013 Nürburgring 24 Hours we decided that it deserved something different – and special. A trek out to [...]
As a first generation Chinese American, I grew up in a household where my parents listened to classical music and opera. I played the piano and of course I hated it. I did not get to watch movies in theatres until I was twelve years of age. My parents were not square, they were just adapting slowly [...]
I’ve always been fascinated with the love our antipodean friends seem to have for the rotary engine. It’s not so much a passing interest, oh no, they’ve developed quite the affliction with the buzzing Wankel. Our first trip to Australia in 2010 is where we got our initial exposure of all things rotary, when we [...]
As the Formula 1 dust settles at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona after last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix I’ve been thinking back to a couple of weeks ago when I was at that very track. It was my first visit to the circuit, courtesy of the Spirit Of Montjuïc classic racing festival, and as [...]
Back in the late 1980s before the term “viral video” even existed, Peugeot released an amazing short film called Climb Dance. The professionally produced film featured the company’s legendary 405 T16 GR during its victorious charges up Pikes Peak. As part of Peugeot’s return to Pikes Peak this year, Climb Dance has been remastered and re-released. Nearly 25 years later, the film absolutely stands the test of time. It’s simple and to the point, and perfectly conveys the madness that was Pikes Peak in the ’80s.
I’m going to tell you something that you might find hard to swallow. This isn’t actually a car. It may have all the characteristics of an automobile: headlights, four wheels, doors and stuff, but this is not a car. What is it? It’s a WMD. A Weapon of Mass Destruction. You may think that the [...]
Welcome back to my garage. I’m happy to report that over the past month a whole lot has happened and progress with Project Z is on a roll. You might be looking at this photo and thinking I’ve gone mad, but don’t worry – the G-nose will be back soon enough. While the car has [...]
