Regardless of what sort of cars you fancy, I think it’s safe to say that everyone can appreciate a good sleeper. In other words, a car that’s modest appearance hides some seriously impressive performance credentials. Over the years, car makers have rolled out some incredible wolves in sheep’s clothing and I thought it would be fun to have a little discussion about which one is the best. Whether its something like the Audi RS2 Avant pictured above, Cadillac’s CTS-V wagon, or any of the awesome turbocharged sedans that have come out of Japan in recent decades – there are some fine candidates out there.
So, what say you? What car do you consider the greatest factory sleeper car of all time?
The Mitsubishi Legnum VR4, a twin turbo estate. It boasts 280hp stock and has so much tuning potential from its 2.5-L V6. Cheap to buy too.
I am starting a sleeper project on one, see below:
- Renault Clio v6: <3300 lbs, 3.0L, 250bhp and yes, it's an MR!!
- Dodge Neon SRT4: ugly, but she have 2.4L turbocharged engine with 230bhp and 340 nm of torque
- my lovely daily driven Suzuki Swift 08': Turbocharged fully rebuilt Suzuki M18A engine, 430bhp and 451nm @1.6bar, totally stock on the outside :D
has to be Volvo 850R or Fox mustang 5.0 LX notchback. At the time the Volvo came out it was incredibly quick. However, in my eyes a true sleeper should have minimal clues to how rapid it really is. On that front the 850R fails slightly with big alloys, a large spoiler and bodykit. The fox really is an ultimate sleeper. It looks like the base model 4cyl, even having small wheels. The only clue is the 5.0 badge and twin exit exhaust.
My old standard 2001 JZS161 Toyota Aristo that came factory with a 2JZGTE was an awesome sleeper. Shocked a lot of people in that car for sure!
I need to give a mention to he Phaeton W12 a mention, looks like a Passat goes like a Porsche. Corners like a barge.
For me it has to be Ford Sierra RS Cosworth 4x4,
Yes the Lotus Carlton would have been your ultimate sleeper of same era, but over double in price it's not so sleeper after all.
Anyone known with ARTZ? Artz was a german car builder and modifier, they build golf 1 replica's on a Porsche 928chassis including the v8. It was a ultimate sleeper for than and still is, it had the looks of a normal standard looking golf 1 except this one was much bigger and rolled on Porsche teledials.More info: http://vwgolf.pl/foto/golf928/Golf928_7.jpghttp://www.vw-one.co.uk/928a.jpghttp://vwgolf.pl/foto/golf928/Golf928_6.jpghttp://www2.diariomotor.com/imagenes/artz_tuning_10.jpgAnd they did the same with a E-Kadett GSI and Corvette C4, but that one didn't really had the ultimate sleeperlook.
http://www.diariomotor.com/imagenes/artz_tuning_21.jpgThey had to buy the original rights from the manufacturers to reproduce these cars.
I've been obsessing over the Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon for a while now. 556HP supercharged Corvette V8, 6spd manual, and rear wheel drive in a station wagon! Any of you ever see "Hit and Run"?
As far as sleeper im voting for a copo anything. Not a chevy guy but base everything down to a radio delete? Except of course the motors... And its a case of those who dont know dont care, those who do know dont race it.
90's All wheel drive turbo vr-4 galant and talons were my favorite all wheel drive sleepers. Currently my 08 srt8 jeep wakes everyone up from honda's to 911's.
Forester xt, used to have a 05. Surprised just everyone that I gave a ride. Think the gmc syclone takes the cake tho
93 Subaru Legacy GT - Unlike a few of the later models, spec b's GTB limited etc, it looked like a regular Subaru Legacy, but with a 203Kw EJ20 lump, twin scroll turbos, upgraded suspension, big brakes. Its the wickedly low rumble of the boxer that would give it away.
@croc302 it's better when it IS a base 4cyl. that's eating 30 PSI and pulls the fronts on street tires.
@silverbullet8 GLH: Goes Like Hell. Another version was the GLHS: Goes Like Hell Shelby or Goes Like Hell S'More. Dodge cars with some Shelby tuning; they had 2.2 liter Turbo engines.
its a dodge omni, built by shelby. 2.5l turbo 4cy with something along the lines of 170hp and 190 torque, i could be wron gon those figures, so dont quote me lol
@D1style wahhhhhh shtsthsthsth
@Kksracer i would take it a step further, and say that the gran nationals sister car, the regal t type was a better sleeper. didnt have the wheels, large turbo emblems, and other stylistic things that the gran natinal it had. plus, it came in more colours than just black
@SPEEDHUNTER golf w12 was a showcar for the "wörthersee". also very undrivable (according to the stig ;))
@Lifestyleinc Did some research on that. Great Cars!
@inspector_exacto But you ever saw how UGLY that thing is? No thank you. Ugly cars don't matter. Sleeper it suppose not to attract peoples attention. At CTS everyone looks and have already an opinion. That is ugly that is. Geeee...
buick regal t type gets my vote. same engine/drivtrain as the gran national, but without all the flashy TURBO INTERCOOLER basges on it
@DNADB1 Even the Auto GT's are pretty damn quick, especially when you press the power button
@stackahumanoid "packing a ferrari V8" -- well a 200hp v8 with a pricetag of 50.000€ (1986!) - no sleeper in my book, only a high price ltd. for people who are suckers for brands. it still was a fiat and fiat and racing doesn't mix...
@inspector_exacto I love station wagon's too. A lowered 240 Volvo estate. Now that will be a sleeper. Not the CTS. In any form.
