GST CHASES TIME LIKE IT STOLE THEIR BIKE

What exactly is a time attack car? While the question is simple, the answer is anything but. Time attack purists will argue that a time attack car is is a street going vehicle moderately converted to a competition car. Some have a more lax view on the subject and consider any car that is competing at a time attack event a valid TA car, while the purists will cry foul when a car specifically built for race duty changes tasks.

BUILDS: SR20-POWERED MAZDA RX-8

When it comes to scouting out cool car builds online, one of my favorite places to visit is the builds section of the Driftworks forums. There are lots of S-chassis and other typical drift builds, but there are also some very unique project logs thrown into the mix. You’ll find everything from classic European cars being outfitted for sideways action to more modern projects like this Mazda RX-8 out of Ireland.

ALL THE SMALL THINGS

The rapid expansion of the internet into our daily lives has provided as many problems as it has solutions. What was once a large planet with many mysterious cultures and rituals, has now been compressed into a virtual world which hosts the answers for everything. Similarly, the many automotive subcultures of the the world can be explored from the comfort of your own home. There are websites and blogs for just about everyone’s tastes which in my opinion is great. The only downside to this is that a lot of people are no longer building cars for themselves anymore, but rather building them to appease and impress the masses.

Thankfully, Keith Wheldon built this for one person only – himself.

THE SKYLINE’S CRUSHED, PIZZA BOY

The history of the Nissan Skyline in the United States is a dark one, filled with tales of black market activity and government intervention. The latest bit of controversy involves the “Big Bird” R33 that was featured in the original The Fast and the Furious movie.

A couple years ago after the car’s registration was improperly handled in the state of Wisconsin, the state’s DMV caught wind and seized the car, along with another imported GT-R. Despite numerous attempts by the car’s owner to straighten out the situation, both Skylines are due to be crushed today.

We don’t like to get political, but it’s a shame to see the government putting so much effort into ridding the country of a couple imported Nissans when there are so many bigger, actually important issues out there.

We’ll miss you, Big Bird.

CRUISIN’ NATIONALS : THE MAIN EVENT

It’s about 7:30am on Saturday morning. I’m sound asleep in a bed at a cheap motel in Santa Maria when I’m awoken by sounds from the parking lot below. Now typically being woken up this early on a Saturday would bring groans of anger, but the sounds I’m hearing are those of hopped up V8s and the occasional straight six firing up in the cool morning air. I also hear the sound of War’s “Lowrider” coming from a car stereo at full volume.

I can’t help but smile as I climb out of bed and get ready for a day of shooting at the Cruisin’ Nationals.

A SUPER SUNDAY AT PUNCHESTOWN

There is something quite enjoyable about a big, filthy burnout. No matter how far and wide our automotive tastes extend, a good burnout appeals to all of us. The sight, the smell, the taste and the sound – what’s not to love?

VIDEO: POETRY IN MOTION

These days there are few online film releases I look forward to more than Josh Clason’s Depth of Speed series.

In his latest release, Josh profiles a man who was able to acquire a his childhood dream car – a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing.

As you’ll see in the film though, “owning” the car is just one small part of the experience.

FRIDAY AT THE CRUISIN’ NATIONALS

Before I move on to the action from the within the main show at the 2012 Cruisin’ Nationals, I want to spend some more time sharing Friday’s pre-show action including the gathering at the Historic Santa Maria Inn and the evening’s cruise session through the heart of Santa Maria.

While shooting vehicles in a car show setting is fine, I have to say there is something very special about seeing these custom machines in their natural habitat – the street.
