Is This Real Life?

There are fast cars and then there are race cars. Seeing a car built for the race track tackle a normal sort of road really drives home that point, and this mesmerising clip of David Hauser blasting through the Course de Côte de St Ursanne hill climb in Switzerland is case in point. Aside from the the speed, it’s the blind faith the driver puts in the Dallara GP2 single seater’s aero that probably impresses the most; making this short little section of twisty road look like it’s being driven in fast forward. Hit play and be amazed…

Sweet mother of god, that's insane.

2

JESUS!
That is one #MaximumAttack

No matter how many times I see it it still boggles the mind. Quite a few other ones out there as well. Hard to get a sense of the speed on board but in some of the other videos from other events where you see the car fly by it really throws you for a loop. Over 200kph in a open wheel car on a mountain is just plain nuts.

4

Insanely fast for such a tight course that it looks like the video is fast-forwarded

5

Sick!

When is the #IATS video dropping?

6

So fast. Such speed. Very acceleration. Wow.

Thats why i love  European Hillclimb Racing!!!

9

Great find on the video. What an intimidating piece of road. Almost no room to drop a tire, no way of drive it flat out.

I'll take people who didn't even come first for 500 Alex!! It is amazing seeing these cars on road courses in Europe.  Hopefully the UK will be opening up for more road based events in a little while.

This chap came first at the event the Dallara video is taken from (video is a different event though):

This guy came second (different event, at about 3 minutes at the top section of the course it gets quite intense!) :

All of these guys blow my mind with their skill and their confidence to drive these cars like this.. amazing stuff all round.. yay for Berg Rennen!!

Great video for a great guy. David is just impressive with the Dallara and he's a really nice person with fans. But the greatest video I saw is still Georg Plasa at Trier, Germany... absolutely awesome! RIP Georg

I guess you can really feel the road with those big fat tires and no power steering. Also, being heavy as three American football players is helpful .... :)

Posted on Jalopnik circa 6 months ago, glad to see you're finally getting around to covering it.

15

nathanwilkinson7 you're the kind of guy that types "FIRST" under videos, aren't you?

"Is this just Fantasy.... Cauuuught in  a landslide no escape from real it-ty"
ahem.
having attempted (repeatedly) to get my local council to agree to a hill climb event I don't think you will see it happening any time soon in the UK, which is really sad as I remember watching F1 cars go full throttle round my home town the last time the local team won the F1 championship :( oh how much everything changes in a decade (or so).

westhave  Not much longer, promise! :D

19

My girlfriend (now wife) and I drove to Germany to watch these things racing up hill.

The sound of a highly strung race engine through the forest was almost too much to take :D

20

nathanwilkinson7 You still go to jalopnik?  LOL

@butts nathanwilkinson7  Nah, just the type of guy who doesn't consider an 8 month old video NEWS.

22

Gillian Bonfils That video of Georg is probably the most intense thing I've ever seen, even more than this. Take a BMW race car, drop in a Judd F1 motor, and go climb hills. RIP Georg, you were an on another level.

23

nathanwilkinson7 Thats what you have to say about the vid? Did you complain on Jalopnik that they didn't debut the vid themselves also?

Go to the corner sir, and sit.

24

can´t wait to this weekend to see the best drivers in portugal to the european hill climb championchip!

25

Well, that was one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

26

James_Turbo  Your wife sounds awesome! My husband & I are planning a trip to St Ursanne later this year to watch this hill climb in person; just watching some of the youtube videos from it gives me the shivers! So ridiculously cool.

27

That's crazy, this is the hill from berg cup right?

28

one of the hills*

29

that was awesome! coolest hill climb vid I've seen since Loeb's Pikes Peak run.

30

so...much...grip

31

Wow!! Aero working, throttle to the floor and blind faith!

Was he allowed to use all the revs on that run?

32
tenpennyjimmy

Nuts… in every sense.

33

Crazy, crazy man.

34

Taryn Croucher James_Turbo  You both sound awesome!!

35

milkplus nathanwilkinson7  What's wrong with Jalopnik? We all love cars don't we?

37

My mind fails to process the needed response time...

38

apex_DNA milkplusnathanwilkinson7 it used to be great, then it was Gawkerized. El Werto left, the software was updated, and any commenter worth reading abandoned ship. On the plus side, it has tons of ads and irrelevant crossposts from other gawker sites.

39

Blind faith? I suspect that most readers and content posters are familiar with the effects aero downforce has on cars, and the odds that the driver in the film had never driven on the track or in the car are likely to be slim to none. So to describe a driver who would have at least a passing acquaintance with the course and car in question to have "blind faith" in a very well understood physical phenomena seems odd at best.
