2012 Speedhunters Awards: Video Of The Year

Now for a new addition to the Speedhunters Awards – Video of the Year. With the vast amount of high quality automotive films being released these days, we only saw fitting to include a category for you guys to pick the video of the year. You can think of it as the Speedhunters version of the Oscars.

Here are the nominees –

Magnus Walker: Urban Outlaw

A detailed look at Mr. Magnus Walker and his deep obsession for Porsche 911s.

Vaughn Gittin Jr. 2nd Shift Drift

Released by Ford Racing, this film features Vaughn Gittin Jr. doing some rather crazy things with his drift car at the Mustang factory.

WRT Audi at the Green Hell

Simple and to the point, an on-board view from the Speedhunters WRT Audi as it tackles the Green Hell.

Racing In The Street : Group C Porsche 962

One of many great films this year from Luke Huxham done as a collabo with Motorhead Magazine. It’s a street driven Porsche 962 and that’s all you really need to know.

O’snap – Gatebil: The Game Changer

I doubt there’s any film that can fully sum up the insanity of Gatebil, but Daniel Hovdahl’s video does a pretty solid job.

OLDER N’ FASTER // THE CALIFORNIA LOOK

Here we have film maker Stephen Brooks doing a fine job of investigating the Cal Look VW movement and its history.

Bloodmasters: Bloodbath Pt.1

The pure madness of East Coast style drifting.

Ken Block’s Gymkhana Five

Ken Block manages to outdo himself once again with this romp through the streets of San Francisco.

Porsche in Le Mans – The 70s

A short but enjoyable collection of retro footage from Porsche. Can’t go wrong with vintage!

The Rolex 24 Experience

This film shows driver Leh Keen’s perspective of the Rolex 24. Not just behind the wheel, but everything that comes with it.

Depth of Speed: My Church

Any of the films from Josh Clason’s Depth of Speed series is worthy of being on this list. This one profiles one fellow and his love of Datsuns.

Le WEC : une compétition, mille expériences

Stephane Benini’s very unusual, and very touching take on Audi’s WEC season.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVsN83euv5M

From Birth to Monaco

A brilliant piece by the BBC F1 showing the first-person journey from birth to F1 stardom.

Keep Drifting Fun

One of the most anticipated films of the year, Will Roegge and Joshua Herron capture the essence of grassroots drifting in America.

Tough one here. I gave it to Magnus Walker: Urban Outlaw, just because it was so inspirational and well produced; felt like I was watching a dramatic movie/documentary. Keep Drifting Fun was really well done as well...Magnus just hit me with that inspiration.
Kinda surprised the Fatlace/RWB Nakai-san video didn't get a nod; not that it would have got my vote, just surprising given all the coverage RWB cars have gotten on SH.

KEEP DRIFTING FUN!!!!!!

4

Oh my god! How to chose between Keep drifting fun and Bloodmasters Bloodbath?!?!

5

You jumped the gun on this...  http://vimeo.com/56435499

6

Bloodbath was totaly unsafe and totaly awesome.

7

I just had to go with Magnus. Great piece. The Bloodmasters tho....whohoo maaan. The definition of FUN! BEST!

8

Thanks Coffe! @coffe_, also thanks to @rodbotchong for including me in the awards! Wouldn't have been in my wildest dreams.

9

I vote the crankandpiston "TRA-Kyoto & The Rocket Bunny"

10

BLOODBATH

11

if i could choose 2 different videos it woud have to be bloodmasters:bloodbath part 1 OR keep drifting, but i voted for the latter as its a really inspirational half hour of viewing i think

12

@kblock43 hey dude! Can i ask for a follow back? Would be awesome!

13

@kblock43 you are boss

14

I just really hope that Gymkhana 5 won't win...

15

All Ken Block had to do was post a link to this on his facebook and all the fanboys came running. Good game. KDF should win, but today its all about who asks fans to go like stuff.

16

Ken Block sent me here, but I voted for KDF, and I would even choose bloodbath over his video too.

17

BloodMasters. It just looked so fun and carefree, I loved it when I first saw it. And it being East Coast, it makes me in Michigan feel a little better. Since most the Bad Ass stuff is West Coast.

18

@EricSeanDelaney Check out KDF

19

@BienseDijkstra thanks Biense, hope are well !

20

Ken Block sent me, I watched all the videos and voted for Gymkhana because it is the most entertaining video ;-)

21

@Clashproduction most things are well here in Holland. Hope you guys are fine also . Amazing what you are making.

22

Truth. I don't think any of the other nominees spammed their respective social media accounts. I'm sure a bunch of people that never even heard of SpeedHunters just flooded the poll with "Gymkhana" votes. SMH. Fanboys come in numbers.

23

Thanks for the nomination Speedhunters. Glad to be a part of the competition and that more people will get to see the video.

24

Keep Drifting Fun, hands down.

26

@ChrisWiltowski  Yet another great movie. But still, if I had to choose what shows "drifting", it would be KDF. Just me though.

27

Ken Block’s Gymkhana Five
Definitely should get first place.

29

Vote Ken Block's Gymkhana Five!

30

KDF, without question. Not made with millions of dollars of sponsors, and yet still the better video.

31

Fuck Ken Block!

32

@BienseDijkstra Great to hear you are fine, hope to see you racing the RSR next year. Thanks for the kind words.

33

How did the icon drift 2 not get on here?

34

Lots of great stuff but as a great piece if film, Urban Outlaw is top class. Has craft, has art, has narrative. A 'proper' piece of short form film making.

35

how the hell is Gymkhana Five in the lead? jesus man, such booshie.  so many better videos on there that i watched over an over

36

I have never seen that urban outlaw video until now, seriously cool. 30+ minutes long too!

37

I totally forgot about the bloodmasters. such an amazing video HAHAHA

38

@KeepDriftingFun already done! :-D

39

pff gymkana 5 wasn't even that good.....ok it was pretty good, but come on, better than bloodmasters?

40

i can't comprehend the fact that the speedhunters followers are saying gymkhana 5 was the best video of the year. Sure, it's got the second highest production value of any up there, and ken block is awesome, but it pales in comparison to the months of touring put together for KDF, or the fun vibe of Bloodmasters.

41

Keep Drifting Fun, Bloodmasters and Urban Outlaw top 3 for sure! Before I saw the first video I said I hope KDF is a selection.

42

someone give Will Roegge and Joshua Herron enough money to shut down the streets of san francisco and lets see what kind of insane video they make. I'm sure it'll be more than a car doing donuts around a motorcycle. (btw, this is not to diminish ken blocks amazing driving skill, but more-so to commend will and josh for their grassroots hard work.)

43

If this is about VIDEO OF THE YEAR then for sure is not about making no effort /just filming/ when capturing some stories /KDF, DoS - despite is an story that I love most/. This leaves us with a few good VIDEOS like UrbanO, 2nd drift, Porshe in LeMans etc. I'm not a big fan of Ken's Gymkhanas... But to be honest I had to ask foregin, non english speaking person to pick 1 VIDEO - so the language of the movie would be most important. And 2 such people after having a little of hard time to pick one of two between Urban outlaw /a bit strange not knowing english but probably due to really high esthetics of the movie/ and le WEC - have choosen le WEC as best VIDEO /to underline again - VIDEO/. It just my humble opinion not about which video is the best as we all know that story matters. But as I understood Le WEC story is made in international language and both persons /did not known what kind of racing are watching/ got really exited when watching Le WEC. IMHO it is sth that is worth of consideration when choosing VIDEO of the year. I'm data technician so my personal choice is WRT Audi - I can watch over and over again finding mistakes and good points of driver and very good idea of cam positioning /great idea to see driver and car movement at the same time/. And knowing that this one of a kind track in the world will be soon changed to another commercial area drives me more to watch that again. But I understand that it is boring for most of the people... IMHO video of the year must be some kind of proffesionall or insane or just well done - showing talent and skills of the people that MADE THAT VIDEO. :)

45

@BienseDijkstra Have you seen the DTM video with Audi ? http://t.co/p2L9ufTW #DTM #Audi

46

@DanBrockett
Yes!
Despite not beeing fan of drift and not really understanding it /maybe yet/. It is great video and fun to watch with really cool shots. Really good job. :)

47

Many thanks for the Audi WEC video in this great selection, a lot of very talented directors and fantastic videos. I had a lot of fun making the WEC video. - Stephane.

48

@Clashproduction the best motorsport film company. http://t.co/DPWcBp9m

49

@Clashproduction here a old picture by Serge Duursma of @DuncanHuisman jumping with 200 kmh in the Storm GT-3 at Zandvoort

50

Keep Drifting Fun, Porsche 962 then Cal-look guys for me. Brilliant videos each with a different flavour, all with passion for cars! Was such a hard decision as all of the Depth of Speed videos are really good!

51

This is what we love about the WRT Audi video. It shows the genius-madness-fearlessness of Edward Sandstrom :>

52

I think it's your best yet!

53

@schultzvia13 KDF was leading the tables for the first day or voting...

54

@schultzvia13 Ken has been posting on Facebook about it, its not just the SH fans, add in the Block fanboys.

55

With the FR-S and Gymkhana seemingly dominating the way they are, might as well start calling these the 'Fanboy of the year awards'. Last year was a lot better than this year as far as what was nominated and what won awards. IMO obviously.

Its not actually one of the nominations here, but relevent:
My absolute favourite video of the year would have to be the Depth-Of-Speed video 'Trackday' by Josh Clason.
Its short, lots of noise, little bit of good music, and the red C10 Skyline in it is bloody gorgeous. I have had to have watched it 100 times now... and loud!

@BenS867 FRS really should get car of the year IMO, and im not a fanboy. But Gymkhana should not get this...

I Just wanted to thank Speedhunters for nominating the 962C film. We had an extremely hard time making that film with a constantly overheating 962C, the skies dropping copious amounts of rain on us and every other problem you could think of! It truly made it impossible to get a lot of the shots I envisioned but with these gorilla style shoots all you can do is roll with it.
All of the film nominated deserve to win each for their own reasons but I think Gym 5 will take the cake. I have watched, studied and found a lot of inspiration from all the films In here and from their creators. I want to thank the creators of these films for pushing the limits of filming and story telling and inspiring all of us, fellow film producers and car enthusiasts alike
And finally a large thank you to all the Speedhunters crew new and old who keep this site running and give other car enthusiasts / content creators the opportunity to share their passion and projects with the world.
Happy New Year to all and keep loving cars!

@BenS867 We did make a change to how we nominate, and looked very closely at the pageview stats. This way, the most read stories were sure to be included. Trying to be as "objective" as possible here :>

76

you missed the best video of 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_R7fe084gSE
we are all over television right now hehehehe (for real)
for ppl asking bmw has m54 250 horse power under hood, you probably won't believe me but it's true

77

Still for me the Stingray and custom chopper are the sickest things in the video! :)

78

KEEP DRIFTING FUN!!!!!

there are a lot of amazing nominees though. Congrats to the winner whoever it is! Well deserved award for such amazing pieces of work.

79

Bloodmasters was pretty damn good... I've yet to watch Keep Drifting Fun (Don't hang me, Vimeo just loves to freeze up on me!)

80

@KeepDriftingFun your winning!!

81

@Lowie_64
Bloodmasters was awesome - wish it was longer, but it was entertaining, no doubt. KDF >>>>>>>> Gym5.

82

Honestly Magnus Walker: The Urban Outlaw blew every other film out of the water with its stunning cinematography and the all around feel. So inspiring how could Ken Block doing the same crap over and over be better that this. You people need to watch that short film again and kick yourself in the ass for voting for such trendy stupid unispiring crap.

83

Honestly Magnus Walker: The Urban Outlaw is the best and most inspiring short film that I have and may ever see. KDF was good too but lacked the passion and feeling that you got from watching Magnus. If you didnt watch then i highly suggest you do so.

84

Magnus Walker: The Urban Outlaw blew every other film out of the water with its stunning cinematography and all around nastalgic feel. Honestly it is the most inspiring short film that I have ever seen.

85

I voted for M:UO but, I have to say, I'm just glad KDF was able to beat Gymkhana5 before the poll closed!
Even with all his Facebook fanboy support, Ken Block couldn't steal this one!
KDF deserves it; very well done educational documentary, with more action that M:UO...so I can understand it winning.
M:UO should have at least been a close second, though.

86

I've been following this poll for the last few days now, and it still baffles me beyond comprehension that I'm in the running for this. It is maybe the perfect way to end this years of work for me, and I have to thank Rod and everyone else in the Speedhunters team to be included in this. It makes me feel very proud, and extremely humble to be able to be even compared to these fantastic guys and creative souls. I could not have imagined this happening.

Again, thanks to everyone. From everyone at Speedhunters to all of you who votes. Grateful is an understatement... This is what keeps me going!

87

Glad KDF won this in the end despite KB putting it up on his FB page to get people to vote (not that there's anything wrong with that). It just shows a grass roots following still here on SH. All the vids were brilliant though and deserving winners in their own right. :)

88

@KeepDriftingFun Done, done annndddd done!
