You Ask The Questions, Nakai-san Will Answer

As you will know after seeing Rod’s Editorial for this month, we are having a bit of a celebration on the 11th of this month, or 911 day. One of our plans is to head down to Chiba and talk with the man behind RWB, the legend that is Nakai-san. Except this time we are leaving the questions up to you! If you had a chance to talk face to face with Nakai, what would you ask him? Would you see what he has to say about Porsche in general or would you attempt to go deeper, find out what gets his creativity flowing, how he begins the process of transforming a regular 911 into a one off RWB special.

Let’s hear what you want to know!

Would you ever go back to your roots and do another AE86? races

2

Would you ever build another Rough World AE86?

3

Why Stella Artois ?
What make this beer your favorite ?

4

Why Porsche?

5

What did you do before RWB ?
What kind of studys did you do ?

6

Are you a believer in the air-cooled flat six or are you open to an exclusive engine swap? where do you stand?

7

How did you come up with the idea that the RWB was to be about big fenders on Porsches?
Why did you choose matte black and gold SSR wheels to be the first style for RWB?

8

Do you think the spike in populatiry of RWB cars in the past number of years has tainted somewhat what Rough World stands for?
I myself am a big fan of the cars, but for a company and the idealology of RWB (which seems to represent "going against the grain" somewhat), I can't help but get the feeling that the business has evolved from building cars for guys with a love and passion for aircooled porsches, to "mega builds" from all around the world with people with deep pockets wanting to get their name in lights for owning an RWB car.
Again I'm only drawing my observations from what I've seen over the past number of years so I'm very interested to hear you opinions

9

My question for Nakai-san. Which do you enjoy more, building cars for customers or driving with customers in events like the Idlers you host?

10

From your first vision of Stella, how long did it take to build it? and how long have you been in your shop?

11

Would you RWB an E36 M3?

12

How does Nakai feel about V.A.D in the UK changing the look of "Number One", taking all the credit for the work, and selling copies of the kit?

13

what originally interested you in cars and at what age?

14

Would you rwb japanese cars like Aristo, Supra, NSX, GT-R's, etc ?

15

I'd love to know if he'll tackle any of the newer Porsche lineup like the new 911, or maybe Cayman, Boxster etc.

16

I would like to know more about his design process... does he model up in scale using clay or scale models and then go full scale or is it all free form design... does the legend belive in mathmatics and repetative planning or does he just get fired up and attack the car with an angle grider, a rivet gun and a manic smile?

17

What other brands and models (either old or new) are catching your eye? I say that with the observation that there's only a limited amount of 911's in the world.

18

This guy represent what i consider a great life. I love mines dont get me wrong but if i could build art(cars) like he does for a living life couldn't get any better.

19

How does he able to think of so many cool RWB names for each of the car he build for other people?
Where does he get his inspiration?

20

1. How do you envision a build before building it?
2. Where do you start when you 1st start to build a car?
3. Would you build a RWB Porsche 951?

21

Would you RWB Volkswagen New Beetle :D

22

I see a lot of Naturally Aspirated RWB 911s, nothing wrong with that, it is great for handling, adjustability, precision.
But on the same side, when I see a RWB bodykit, it always reminds me of works car like the 935 and the 993 GT2 (evo), both of which had massive over-fenders or wings to use the full potential of their turbocharged engines (through wide tires and tracks).
That's why I'm wondering why we don't see many bi-turbocharged RWB cars. As a package, it would make sense to use a bi-turbocharged engine in the RWB body.
Thoughts?

23

Which cars do you hate? hate to work on?

What was your first car? the first car you modified? the first 911 you modified (is it still around)?

Do you like the looks of the 2012 GT3 RSR? There are similarities between the works RSR and your creations..

Favorite factory porsche of all time?

24

-What are the odds of you and Bisi Ezerioha getting together and creating a twin-turbo, widebody RWB/Bisimoto 911?

25

How do you feel about what RWB has become on the world stage, with your "product" per see being so highly sort after in the tuner world? Do you miss what it was in the early days as just a few friends working on cars, or do you find it just as fun now as it ever was? and not really a question but if you could pass it on dino, please just keep doing what you're doing, the cars are really pieces of art in themselves. PS, more AE86's please

26

My question would be   When were you able to make RWB full time, how long after you started building were you able to turn it into a profit and what type of sacrifices and obstacles did you encounter on the way to your present success?

27

Why have you not gotten sponsored by stella artois yet?!

28

Love your work, would be very much interested in a 350Z (fairlady) RWB conversion! Would you be interested in such a build? (in my humble opinion it would suit your style very much ;) )

29

So many Porsche and RWB questions (as there should be), but how about when you're away from RWB? What kind of hobbies or interests do you have outside of the car world?

*back to car stuff*

I'm really interested in some of the other masterpieces you've created, like the 86 or Mark Arcenal's S14. Will you also work on a car that isn't a Porsche if a client so desired?

30

What's the reasoning behind the looks of your cars? Is there any sort of "RWB Philosophy"?

31
hashtagfatlaceillestlifestyleryO

Who cuts your hair for you? Its majestic.

32

which porsche that you haven't worked on do you want to work on the most? and which porsches could there never be an RWB design for?

33

Is it hard finding these cars since there getting more and more rare?

34

You are obviously a big fan of Red Stripe and Jamaica, when are you gonna come? There is a race meet in October 14 to 15 :)

35

36

What gave you the inspiration to start building cars? and why Porsche's?

37

Have you ever built an RWB 911 in Germany? If so, have you driven it to the Porsche factory/museum, because I think the original air-cooled 911 designers would be fans of your builds?

38

If you could have any car you wanted and it couldn't be a Porsche, what car would you choose to drive and look at every day?

39

When someone comes to you with a car, do you recommend they take the car to a tuning shop before or after you do the bodywork ? Or do you not recommend tuning shops at all?

40

Nakai-san, you could become the one, remembered forever for turning the 996 from ugly duckling to masterpiece... Where is the 996 RWB ( names Good Lookin') ????

41

Nakai-san, where would i go to convert my 964 to RWB. I live in PA, but would be willing to drive. How much would it cost (labor and parts) bodywork and suspension/rims. Has your shop in cali opened yet?

43

Clearly you have a passion for Porsches, are there any other models and/or brands that evokes the same passion from you?  If not for cars, where do you think you would have found yourself?  Thanks, and congratulations on building an iconic brand.

45

I think his 911's look amazing. I'd be curious to see what other cars he is looking forward to working on in the future?

49

Have you ever thought about tuning/building anything JDM? It must be tempting to see what your could do with a AE86 or a Silvia. Or are you planning to build Porsches exclusively untill the end

51

Since you drive and modify Porsche(s), do you prefer a Mid-ship layout? And if yes, why? Otherwise, specify which layout you prefer?

From your perspective, is Aerodynamic and the flow of which it goes on any vehicle just as important as say engine modification?

There was recently a lot of internet chatter about VAD's wide body 911 called Revenger and how people thought it was a knock off RWB car .  What is your opinion of the car or any other companies making wide body 911 cars.

55

how do you feel when a client such as VAD requests an RWB creation, sells it in little over a few months, only to have a "renegade aero kit" similar to yours?

Obviously RWB's specialty is Porsches, but have you ever considered branching out and doing extensive tuning for other brands? Your AE86 was a big hit in the JDM community.

71

What was the reason to go to the next step, the shop and professional work, selling your ideas and making a line of cars like yours ? And something that I really want to know - do you think to change your body kits style ? All of your Porsche's have the same body kits with just some minor differences,do you think for something new ?

72

Just one question :I've always wanted to RWB my 964, does Nakai san need to do the work himself or can I get one of the official shops to install the kits (RWB in the UK)?Hope he is looking at beautifying the newer Porsches too!!

73

What do you think of VAD after they got you to build them a car and then they make replicas with no connection to RWB?  Do you feel betrayed?

74

If you were to own/modify any water-cooled Porsche what would it be?

75

@nufftweets Whoops, just asked the same question...but not as well. My b. Haha.

76

Do you think your could do your magic to the carrera gt?

77

What does the color of a car represent to you, and how do you go about choosing one for each individual project?

78

Who were your role models or inspiration growing up? Was/is your father involved in what you do for a living?

79

@JoeWhaler have you not seen the RWB S15 or AE86? lol

80

If you were to apply the Rauh Welt Begriff style to an old school American Muscle car, what would it be and why?

81

Hello Nakai-san, I'm a big fan of your works, but I have something curious about, will you be interested to work on a S30 or Z33 Fairlady?

82

how did you get started in this line of work? what made you pursue it as you did? Who taught you everything you know and use today?

83

It seems to me that many of the RWB Porsches have been made to look very much like the 993 GT2 races cars of the 90's. Were these race cars the inspiration for the "RWB style"?
And have you considered doing bodywork on newer Porsche models, like the 996, 997, Boxter and Cayman?

84

Is there any particular non-automotive pool that you draw a lot of inspiration from-- music, films, etc?

85

I wanted to know how a successful company like Rwb and earn respect in the automotive tracking because you just do not build cars but legends

86

If I came to your shop with a Volkswagen beetle would you make it look like one of your 911s?

87

What was the hardest thing you had to sacrifice for RWB and its future?

88

What would you say is the best looking production car on sale?

89

Would you ever consider working directly with Porsche on a factory built special edition 911?

90

What is your view on "KNOCKOFFS & REPLICAS VS. THE REAL DEAL"?!
:p

91

Would you ever consider creating a broader 'model range', including other cars makes than porsche, and modify them in the same style as the RWB porsches. Even though you made the one off s15 and ae86, would you ever consider making them part of your permanent 'model range'?

What is your favourite car of all time, and why?

Would you ever consider writing a book, or being in a documentary of your life and how you got to be were you are today?

I see motorsports is has a huge influence from the 911 RSR to the 993 EVO aerodynamics and the endurance events I see RWB cars participating in. Did you grow you watching motorsports and if so, what are your favorite race cars (new and old)? Do you have any current motorsports series you actively watch or update yourself for race results or news? With the announcement of the Asian Le Mans Series ramping up a 2013 season, could you see yourself starting up an RWB endurance team for the 3 Hours of Fuji the same way local teams run at the 8 Hours of Suzuka? Thank you for your time and keep up the good work.

I asked Nakai-san about his trip to Russia. :) he seems to wanted to bring into Japan a VAZ 2101. And so, he executed his wish? and if "yes", then what would he do with a "Zhiguli" ? something like resto or old-school racing cars like the Datsun 510 and kpgc10. or something completely new, with a mix of old style Soviet automobile and RWB ?
thanks in advance for the his answer. and thanks for all, what he did for the car culture :)

modding a 993 is becoming more and more hard to do due to the increased value of the air cooled cars.... that said there are PLENTY of 997 cars out there which is an amazing car and prices have come down to a reasonable level that could make sense for a RWB 997, if I buy one and send to you can we make this happen????
