Porsche dropped quite a few jaws today when they unveiled the 918 RSR at the Detroit Auto Show. Under all of that modern, yet slightly retro bodywork is the drivetrain of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid in all of its 767 horsepower, 10,300 rpm glory.
I don’t think anything else needs to be said. Porsche does it again.

The engine is from the RS Spyder LMP2, only the flywheel KERS comes from the GT3 RSR.

no 4.0L Flat 6 (as in the GT3R hy) but a 555bhp 3.4L RS Spyder derived V8.
Hybrid system is the same though : two electric motors at the front wheels for an extra 202bhp.
Design is perfect.
Sooo.... Does this mean production possibilities for the 918?

It has no class, they are saying they hope race series' would just make a class for it. Which in my opinion is beyond stupid. As this sits now I really doubt you will ever see this on a race track in a proper series.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the actual car they will race at the Nurburgring. Probably a mock up. You can tell they just retrofitted fake parts on the concept car they built last year. I'm sure with less than a year in development, they didn't want to lose a little over a week of development time by sending it over for a motorshow!
Definitely reminds of the old school Porsche heritage, rather than the Panamera and Cayenne. Well done.

It's not the drivetrain of the gt3r hybrid, it is the electric hybrid system out of it and the v8 out of the RS Spyder prototype car.
