Car Spotlight >> Sr20 Powered Datsun 510

My Car Spotlight features from Australia are far from over, as Rod and I seemed to encounter crazy machinery wherever we ended up going. On the Wednesday night, the day before the World Time Attack Challenge practice day, we headed to the Eastern Creek drag strip to check out the regular mid-week drag event. We got the tip from Rocky over at Pac Performance who mentioned there is always a pretty large turnout. With rain on the forecast and a trade show taking up most of the paddock however not a lot of people ended up showing up, but we did have a good time checking out the 30-40 cars that were there for a bit of action.

Which is where we spotted this rather special Datsun 510 sedan. After seeing it shoot down the drag strip at a barely believable speed we just had to get a closer look.

Turns out it was the car's first outing since the owner finished working on it. He recently bought it from an elderly woman, who had obviously maintained it rather well…

…and ended up doing a few modifications to it…

…like dropping a tuned SR20DET into the engine bay! This explained all!

Unfortunately the savage power of the SR ended up snapping the stock drive shafts on the car's second run, ending the fun for the night.

It was all stock in the interior aside from the chunky steering wheel.

I'm sure the owner will be back with to the strip in due course after he gets the car fixed up again.

sr20dett?

8

SR20DETT?

-1 'T'??

9

It looks so immaculate!!

I think its a bit of common sense that the SR20 would break stock parts but its all trial and error.

10

Agree with Ian-Battle House.

The SR is a nice swap....but it ends up handling like shit !....unless you cut the firewall and push the engine back some, and rework the steering rack location.

11

SR20DETT? typo, or is he hiding a second turbo?

12

an sr20dett? COME ON DINO lol

13

Nothing beats a classic with a cool swap. However it was kinda careless to not upgrade the axles especially with that big turbo. Kudos for the cool swap!!

14

Heck. That looks like a recipe for fun. But why go straight? :/ LOL

15

sick, but datsuns arent my style. I'm a s chassis kind of guy lol

16

it's a camber not a caster

17

does look like alot of caster !

18

I love how low and angled the engine sits.

sr20det is the correct designation for the pictured engine. unlike toyota, nissan tells ya if there's one turbo or two by (t) or (tt) (hehe i said tt)

20

Thats my mates car.... yeah George!

Alex,

That car is RHD so it could retain the standard steering box, not rack like you suggested.

My 1600 has the Sr mounted as close as it can be to the factory firewall and it turns unreal.

Sorry for they typo, my fingers automatically hit the "T" key twice when typing Nissan engine codes. I've written RB26DETT too many times I guess. GOMENNASAI!!

23

What times did this car manage/

24

nice seeing that speedhunters still does some coverage on older japanese cars. a sr20 swap in a 510 is like a dime a dozen ( yes theres a pun in there) still nice car though

26

That was my dream... can the people read my mind ???

27
