This past weekend in Vegas was a painful one full of bad luck… literally. Thursday night during practice I was on fire right off the trailer. The 2010 Falken Tire Ford Mustang was incredible and I was feeling great. But Friday’s practice had other plans for me. On my first run I knew the track was slick as it was like 50 degrees hotter then the prior evening. I entered at about 70% just to get a feel of the course, and unfortunately, the car just wouldn’t transition back from the feint entry. I did everything I could to keep it out of the wall but it just grew legs and came right out at me and bit the corner of the Mustang right off. Thanks to the team’s dedication and preparation, ASD and Team Falken were able to get the car fixed within 2 hours and get me out to qualifying. Driving the track in my head all day paid off as I nailed my first qualifying run, considering the circumstances, and was in for Saturday.

Saturday we were on fire once again – that course entry was insane and fun. I ran Kenji in top 32 which was fun, and then I was up against JTP in the round of 16. Once again my bad luck in Vegas would put me out of the event as we picked up some debris in the back lot which caused the front right tire to flatten on the entry of second run. I kept it out of the wall but spun while fighting it. Check out the video of my hit from practice – definitely the hardest of my career – after watching this video I feel pretty lucky. The wheel seems to have taken most of the impact which is why I think I got off so easy.

Check out this preview of the drifting in Need for Speed Shift. Aside from my car being in the game, I have been very involved in the game development. I have been working on this behind the scenes with the developers for about a year, it has been so hard to keep my mouth shut. I have over 100 hours in developing and adjusting the drifting physics for this game and I am confident to say it is the most realistic drifting to date and you can actually feel it really good using a controller.

Our challenge was to make it accessible to everyone – from an 8 year old used to playing arcade-type games all the way to a pro driver; we accomplished that goal with the different modes. If you approach the game like your actually driving a car and not like your playing a game, you will get the hang of it real quick.  I have been a SIM gamer for years and I have never enjoyed a game with a controller until now. I am very happy with what we have been able to accomplish and am excited for everyone to be able to feel it when it comes out September 15th.  The graphics are insane and the in-car view is my absolute favorite.

Dude that was a gnargly crash! I'm looking forward to the game! JR doing big things, great work buddy :D

2

Woaaa u lose grip at front and have nothing to do >.> But that tire and bumper take smash. Not so bad i think.

3

Sorry to say, but why then wheels are steering the same way as the corner in the middle of it (or not steering at all...).

And how come a game can be realistic when its played with a controller? Still I wait the moment I can try it, but from what I can see that "drift mode" looks straight like it was on Grid.

4

this bs better than forza 3.

nope.

5

It is hard for me to even look at that crash video. Owch.

Shift looks alright...too bad I don't have a console to play it on.

6

would have been so much better if they made it feel good for a steering wheel but when your trying to make as much money as you can you dont make a game for ppl that only have a wheel

7

What a team huh? 2 hours and you were back out? Thats not just impressive thats damn impressive.

8

That game doesn't look as advanced as the other top racing games of today. Realistic? I can race a 240sx in any video game and then go out and try it and say "wow this isn't just a video game, I'm really doing this".

I agree with Warren.

The front wheels were steering into the corner from 0:02 to 0:05 and, Vaughn, you tried to do something when you saw the wall in your face. What were you thinking? or better yet, what were you smoking?

9

Warren and 86-2rbo- The entry in vegas was a feint. you turn at the wall first then flick it back. The car got some push due to the lack of grip on the 150 degree track and that's all she wrote. you can see me trying to get the front to grab and counter before I locked them up to slow as much as possible before impact. It literally felt like I lost steering on entry thats how much push I had

When I talk about feel and being realistic I mean that its not arcady. you don't automatically get put into drift by pushing a series of buttons. You need to toss the car or use the ebrake properly, you have to give proper amount of inputs to get the right results with regards to initiation and adjustments. I have always used wheels and in my opinion both grid and Forza 2 feel like garbage on the wheel and the controller. Shift is the most realistic game out of the box I have ever played. It is quite challenging and fun, I'm curious to hear your feedback when you get a chance to try it!

Damn man, nasty crash. Brilliant that the mechanics sorted the car out quick though.

But about SHIFT, it certainly LOOKS pretty good, that's for sure. But, still have to see how good the physics are to be honest, as the last games were crap. Entertaining for a while, but technically crap.

but I'm gonna buy SHIFT though, and I'm hoping you can modify them?

11

whens it out? what wheel would u suggest to use the logitech g25?

12

I agree pro street was pretty garbage as far as drifting was concerned Shift is night and day in comparison as it uses a completely different physics model, yes you can modify the cars in all aspects.

13

how does SHIFTcompare to GT5 prologue in terms of drifting. because i feel at this point GT5P's drifting was pretty spot on in terms of accuracy?

i'll trust JR and try SHIFT but NF games have been lackluster to ay the very leat in the pat couple of games. Hope they can get it back to the NFS i know and love :)

14

So many keyboard drifters... I'm assuming by having a go at Jr that means you must be able to do much better?

15

I use GT3 as a bench mark for any game I play as I think its way better then any of the more recent games out when the cars are tuned properly. I havent played gt5 much so I cant answer that question sorry.

I have not been a huge fan of the past NFS games. Shift uses an extremely realistic physics model built off of real geometry from manufacturers. it is leaps and bounds from the other games and the other nfs titles everyone is used to.The racing is incredible too.

I have had some friends that LOVE Forza and GT play the most recent version of shift i have been testing. After 10-15 minutes of cussing and getting used to it they fall in love.

16

I've got to say, Speedhunters seems to have been the best thing that ever happened to the NFS series. Keep it up! I'm very impressed with what I've seen from the game so far. If the driving model is good, it should be the one to beat.

17

tried this game already from a demo..

forza 3 is BS!!

NFS is the shit!!

in car view is the best!

18

I hope Shift is as good as you say ! Prostreet was cool but the drifting was fickle at best.

19

Shift is starting to sound good, its just that it bothers me they don't seem to be recognizing or assessing the competition. It has a much smaller number of cars than Forza and Granturismo and i fear the drift physics will not rival that of Granturismo. If they do better i will nearly be addicted to the game, but first i need to ask a few questions about how it connects with the drift culture:

Can you do engine swaps, Forza 2 had this and that was made a while ago now, I feel its an important part of drifting as it can help express you as a drifter. Eg if i have a 350z with an LS6 it shows i like aggressive powerful torque fueled drifting restrained within a controllable shell.

Can you convert the drive. Eg awd evo to rwd or better yet fwd scion (note this is in the game) to rwd.

Can you do paint job customization like in Foza 2 or will it be the annoying 20 vinyl limit with no gradients.

I just feel that if you don't do these things you wont be able to compete with all the new games that are out, the drifting feeling being really realistic will be great but thats not the only important part of drifting. (P.S could you put in a good word to get the HSV Commodore Clubsport R8 and Holden Monaroe in the game, they have great potential as drift machines and Commodores are used in one of the worlds most popular touring events the v8 super-cars, theyre a great choice for the game and will pull lots of people from Australia).

Thanks and by the way JR i really like your drifting style, you've got serious skill, that crash was bad luck, and yet you still got through and did well good work.

20

I'll get NFS Shift on day one, I love ProStreet, Shift is like the evolution from amateur events to pro events, it's gonna be great fun!

21

Hey JR will the game have a button for clutch-kick, please say yes. hahah

22

Glad to hear you're alright after that insane crash. Understeer is my worst nightmare. What an amazing team of mechanics to have it ready to go in two hours. I hope they're paid well!

As far as the game goes, the main thing that concerns me that I can SEE from the video is that there doesn't seem to be a lot of countersteering going on. That is one of the most important things for me. I want to be smashing that d-pad or joystick thingy as hard as I can countersteering.

As far as I'm concerned, when it comes to realistic physics in a drifting game, Yuke's D1GP game from '06 (I think) is still the best to date. You couldn't customize the cars power or body work, just a little paint and wheel changes, but you could take care of the important stuff. You could adjust the vehicles' suspension settings, tire pressure and compound, and a few other things. By far the best thing about it though is once you get your car set up right, full lock all day long. I still play it all the time. Grid and Forza 1&2 sit on the shelf with the 360 while I play the trusty ol' ps2. Just this afternoon, I kicked Rhys Millen's ass at Irwindale! Haha, Anyway...

Another thing I noticed, is the use of huge arrows on the pavement. That may be great for little kids who don't know which way to turn next, but that is a major turn off for someone like me. I want the track and cars to make me feel like I'm there on the days I'm sitting on my ass at home, wishing I had an event do drive in.

I'm sure it doesn't make much of a difference to you what I think, but coming from another drifter's standpoint, I hope you can at least give some thought to what I've said. Mostly, just because I spent ten minutes typing this! Haha

Anyway, keep up the great driving.

Justin
