News>>mr2 To Return In Hybrid Form?

Here's another bit of interesting speculation about Toyota.

The Auto Express is reporting that Toyota is developing a "performance hybrid" vehicle that will compete with the new Honda CR-Z. The new car is said to be powered by a version of the Prius engine, but with power routed to the rear-wheels via a paddle-shifted transmission. I couldn't find anything in the article that specifically states the new car will be mid-engined, but Toyota executive vice president Masatami Takimoto did tell Auto Express "We are aware of the fondness with which the MR2 is held in the UK and Europe, and are developing a small hybrid sports car".

In keeping with the tradition of past MR2's, the new car would be affordable and fun to drive, as well as deliver great fuel economy from it's hybrid powertrain. Imagine being able to walking into your local Toyota dealership and seeing this "new MR2" sitting in the showroom next to the new Toyota-Subaru FR coupe….

awsome idea, especially the hybrid part

but personally, i don't like the look of it, the front end is too rounded for my tastes though

2

what happened to sports cars that looked like sports cars?

i'm not into wedge shaped geometric figures with led headlights.

6

an egg with wheels? WTF?

7

It looks like the new Nissan G37.....not my cup of tea.

8

That would be awesome but that rendering is sh1t.

9

As a lover of all 3 generations of the MR2 I'd prefer they call it something else.

10

I agree with ecm.. that rendering does look weak..... but the idea is Bloody spot on!

Toyota needs to do this... I personaly enjoy tuning toyotas more than anyother car... I find there easer to maintain and easer to instal mods.... Please do boath cars Toyota!

11

It doesn't even look like a MR car.....

12

toyota is fucking gay now

nissan ftw. at least they released thier supercar and still are pumping out sports car (370z)

13

i wana play game

14

what did they model the face on? Looks like something stored in area51!

15

That's a press hack job, trust me not a design sketch at all....looks like they borrowed (loosely) from Scion, Toyota FTHS, and perhaps a Honda (US studio) press photos and forgot about proportions.

16

I dont think the car in the pic is an MR, the frunk is longer than the trunk :p

17

Yeah, a watered-down hybrid is EXACTLY what the people think of when they think MR-2! Good going, Toyota, kick us in the teeth again! Perhaps it'll get 1,000 per gallon on 3 1/2 horsepower? Or maybe they'll do like they did with the MR-S, making it heavier, uglier and less powerful....taking a full three steps backwards in developement.

Way to piss on the legacy, Toyota. Stand aside, while companies that still give a shit make REAL sports cars.

W/ a Prius engine uhhhhh NO. I think a sports car is supposed to be lightweight, rwd, good handling, power, and fun. Getting 50mpg is not something that makes a good sports car. Hey guys that is only a drawing and it probably wont look anything like that. I wonder if this car has to do with the other car that toyota and subie plan to make the is rwd.

Is this a 'sporty' car or a 'sports' car? Quite Different! Difference being performance. As a current MR2 (SW20) Owner I'd hate to see this car marked as a 'sporty' car. Toyota, please wake up and starting make a true sports car again like the old SW20 or Supra's. Sure their now fuel efficient, if you want something practical like that go buy a Pruis. This car also looks heavy (probably to store all those batteries) which means if they could get a good 0-100kph time if comparing to the Tesla but I hope they think of what the MR was completely built on......handling, not just a good 0-100 time. Fingers crossed they bring out a descent sports car again, this market seems to be drying up.
