Gallery>>wheelhunting At Rennsport

As I navigated the paddock at the Rennsport Reunion overwhelmed with Porsche race cars from every era, I started taking notice of the different sorts of wheels outfitted to these racing machines. I then figured it might be fun to do a little gallery showing some of the cool rollers I came across.

There were so many different types of competition wheels. From the wide steelies of the 1967 906E…

…to the even wider Fuchs and fat Goodyear tires on this 911 RSR.

Then of course you have the famous aero covers of the late '70s and '80s.

Some of these aero wheels were rather primitive looking, like the ones mounted on the "Baby" 935.

Meanwhile the BBS wheels on the "Moby " 935 were exposed.

Then you have the Minilite/Panasport eight-spoke style seen on vintage race cars of all types.

I'm quite fond of these black centerlocking five-spokes.

Color-matching was popular on the 935 aero wheels. Here they are in yellow.

Or in this case, gloss black.

Some more BBS flavor on the GT2 Evo.

Smaller five-spokes and Avon rubber perfectly fit the rear fenders of this '67 Porsche 910.

Centerlocking mesh wheels on the Jagermeister car.

Fuchs and low profile Avons on the 1973 Martini RSR.

Colormatched (BBS?) centerlock wheels look perfect on this 993 Turbo.

Another example of finned race wheels. Looks pretty futuristic doesn't it?

Check out the wheels on the Trust 962. Awesome.

Or how about the Volk wheels on this Kremer K8 from 1995?

One more representing the mesh type.

That's just a slice of the wheel porn that was found at Rennsport.

I'm thinking about doing some more of these wheel-focused galleries at future events. What do you guys think?

-Mike Garrett

damnit those Aero discs are so awesome.

2

More wheel galleries are much apreciated :-)

3

Great post, love the unique wheel designs, function = fashion!

4

Wheelhunters. Lol. Very nice gallery of vintage wheels

5

yea more wheels! pairing the wheel details with a full shot of the car would be neat too.

7

Great idea for a post, lots of variety and want-inducing merchandise. Thanks!

8

Great picture of the polished black wheel. The reflections almost make it look shattered.

9

Great post!

10

No write-up for that Jägermeister 934T?

11

those aero discs help cool the breaks

12

Yes! totally digging the old school white volk GT-C lookin things and the opening wheel discs are awesome too

13

This kind of article is very inspiring ... Learned me some new things. Ty. ;)

14

Hello Mike, more Wheeels for the future to create Wheel-Wiki

15

Rad. I'm feelin those aero'd BBS wheels in the first shot.

16

The pictures aren't beautiful and if there's no information it's meaningless if you don't track down the manufacturer and history of the wheels... at least the manufacturer. I'm all for wheel whoring, but just saying "because racecar" isn't going to cut it.

17

That gloss black is trippy. Took me a bit to realize its not just the center of the rim missing.

18

I would love to see more wheel galleries. Really shows the diversity IMO

Good wheelhunting like the movie, it deserves some academy awards :P

22

Sick! I'm a fan of the color matched 935 aero wheels : )

23

I like it! I think the Japanese meets would have the most interesting variety of wheels. Either that or all TE37.

24

More wheel-focused galleries please

25

Please do!! I know I might be asking for much, but more detail on material, spec, and such would be sweet!!

26

It would be nice to see these olschool aero covers on current high performance tuning cars!

27

As I am trying to make a rim/wheel encyclopedy and am especially interested in oldschool wheels and rare wheels, I want more wheel galleries !

If some of you have some specific technical informations about some wheels showed, I would be grateful if you could tell in the comments ;)

28

Mike, are YOU the knucklehead who was taking pictures of wheels in the Porsche Corral? I was 16x8 Fuchs with Kumho SPT's on a Grand Prix White Carrera...

29

The 906's wheels are actually called bi-metal. They're a blend of steel with a magnesium dip.

Was that a real 906E? There were only 9 906 equipped with the Injection engine, we actually have one which was mounted in the one we race at work. It's a wonderful piece of mechanical art, but finding an injection pump is hell (it costs about 25K).

30

sick post!!

31

This is REAL wheel set ups. See how they have sidewall? That fatlace/hellaflush sh1t is a joke and everybody who has it deserves to be ridiculed the same as underbody lights, m3 fenders, and altezza taillights. hellalame. but what do you expect from a bunch of dumb shoe fans (what a bunch of little women) from san francisco that don't know anything about cars....

32

Love, love, LOVE the aero (aka "Turbo") wheels.

33

Aero cover/aero wheels are the next big thing in herrafrush VW culture. Just going to call that now.

34

I like the idea of a wheel-centric post but as Milk+ wrote the execution could be better. The second picture's caption could have something about how the 904 and 906 were the last dedicated Porsche race cars to use 15" centers from steel 911wheels with wider alloy rims. The 9" and 11" wheels on the RSR (third picture) and other 70's era racing cars had deep front spacing which made them all but impossible to polish. The head of Porsche racing at the time famously said, "they only have to look like Porsche wheels from the grandstand", and so the wheels were left with a blasted finish. Anyway, keep up the good work!

35

fantastic mr garret. .. wheels - no pun intended -make the world go round. overlooked by 95% of the auto community but always unique in there own way. each wheel. each tire .until i get my flux capacitor running right this is still the way of the game.. PLEASE POST MORE WHEEL PORN! ..

36

Yes please. I love wheels, love them on my mtn bike, and really think they make a car go from good to great. So, again yes please, more wheels.

37

good wheels

38

Yes please! Sizes and specs would be nice too. But I agree, doing a wheel gallery at JDM, and classic JDM meetings would be very cool.

39

CENTRE LOCK FTW!!! XD

40

Some of these wheels remind me of the BMW M system 1's with their detachable brake cooling covers, or the ATS AMG's.. It's interesting when you begin to notice track culture influence in the style of some major car manufacturers. I, for one, strongly believe that form is born from function.. Nice feature Mike, G.

41

oow..Good wheels..

42

awesome, love this wheel huntng mike, DO IT

44

The Finned BBS wheels were called Turbo-fans. And they are essentially a regular BBS wheel with the turbo fan bolted into place.

And yes, they are just about the coolest wheel ever.

45

Yes, more wheel profiles fo sho. how about you list the sizes? That'd satisfy some curiosity here

46

hey the last picture... the caliper it has fins to help cool it! neat-o!

47

You can have all those BBS wheels, I’ll stick with the RSR finish Fuchs, 3rd and 14th. The fact they could make the marketing department happy by racing with the same wheels in showroom, in wider and wider widths still kills me.

48

this is a freakin awesome post! please, more of this! (oldskool jdm 13-16s yeah?! :D ) also, the aerocovers are piempin.

49

hey the last picture... the caliper it has fins to help cool it! neat-o!

50

Yes, sir, more wheel porn please!

51

Those centerlock BBS wheels on the 993 turbo are awesome!

@pstar

Exactly!

52

@ pstar.

Youre basically saying that a car has to be on race track specs to be respectable???? i think its you that dont get it.

Im sure that you are the hot rodder that says lowriders are stupid. Ever heard of "to each their own" ??

I like every form of car modyfing as long as is well done, and i dont bitch at stuff i dont like, you should take notes.

Now about the aero covers, i never seen those on detail pics, much less in person (only old race piccies) but i guess are the ones that inspired the Turbo alloys and later the super tuff Shmidt TH 3 piece wheels, am i onto something??? or totally out of line??

More wheel galleries please.

55

You guys seemed to enjoy my Wheelhunting post from the Rennsport Reunion, so last weekend during my visit to Famoso Raceway for the California Hot Rod Reunion I figured I should do the same.
