Behind The Scenes>>chris Forsberg’s Nos Commerical Shoot

Last week we got an invite to a commercial shoot for NOS Energy Drink, featuring '09 Formula Drift Champion Chris Forsberg. Not knowing quite what to expect, I jumped into the car on Friday morning and headed north to Willow Springs, passing the endless string of commuters heading the opposite direction on Route 14 into the LA basin.

Upon arriving, I noticed to two things. One, it was damn cold. I think there's only about two weeks out of the year when Willow Springs is actually pleasant. The rest of the time it's either very hot and windy, or very cold and windy…

The second thing I noticed was this was a big production. I was expecting a couple cameras and a van maybe, but this was a full-on professional setup, with a huge crew, too much expensive equipment to count, and even Hollywood style catering.

The commercial is going to focus exclusively on Chris Forsberg, showing a "a day in the life" of a drifting champion.

One of the really cool things is that it's not going feature just Chris as a driver, but his crew as well. Formula Drift MC Jarod DeAnda was also on hand for a cameo spot.

I was thinking it might have been a little nerve-wracking for "blue collar" guys like Chris and his team to star in a big time commercial, but the production staff was easy going, and it looked like everyone was enjoying themselves.

One thing I found interesting was that even with all of the high tech equipment on hand, a lot of the actual shooting was done with Canon DSLR cameras. The ability to shoot video with these things is a game-changer…

This should give you an idea of the number of people on hand for the shoot. Even I felt like a big shot, hearing the seasoned crew members giving tips on how to order from the catering truck…

I'm not allowed to reveal much about the actual contents of the commercial, but it sounds like it's going to be pretty cool.

The finished product should be ready go within the next few weeks, and is actually going to be aired during NASCAR races on TV – meaning it will show drifting to a huge audience. Other commercials have featured pro drifters before, but this is going to be the first one completely about drifting.

Aside from the commercial, it was also nice to watch Chris slide the Z around Horsethief Mile. It's been too long since I've seen a pro drift car in action…

I've also come away with a new-found appreciation for the work that goes into a "simple" TV commercial.

Thanks to NOS Energy Drink and the ID Agency for letting us coming out to observe.

We'll be sure to let you guys known when the commercial is done, so you can check it out for yourselves.

That's Hot !!!

Chris deserves the Hype. He has earned it.

I talked to him once at ATL airport right after he won Drift Atlanta;

He is a real down to earth dude.

I got to sit with the D.A Crew the next year in ATL (by accident)

Narfing Hallerious!! You have not been to a drift event till you have heard Tony Angelo

Talk smak about the judges.

Thanks Tony for the drifting advice, and thanks Chris for the DVD.

BUG UP!!!

Sounds pretty interesting!

Linhbergh's hat is so rad.

5

I spy the Lin...

6

Awesome, love seeing behind the scenes stuff!

7

Uh.... During nascar? That's kinda weird. Huge audience, yeah, but is that really the audience they're going after?? I'll be watching it online, lol, can't wait to see the final product. :)

8

Maybe people will actually watch Nascar now!!! LOL jk

Its awesome that drifting will get its rightful spotlight with this commercial.

A Saint....good for you on laffing with the DA guys...tho about Tony DeAngelo talking smack about the judges....pretty funny how HE was one of the 3 judges at FD Irwindale, and had to try to explain why he said Gittin lost vs. Pfeiffer.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61ikqcVUXls for vid proof of TERRIBLE judging and call.....I wonder what the backstory is on that....

@ Meg II CarxGirl - In USA< if you want to promote anyuthing with racing, you need to promote it to NASCAR. Did you see the coverage of the Long Beach Grand Prix or the 24hours of Daytona? Yeah, neither did any of us...but I know there were 3 NASCAR events televised nationally those weekends...

@ vid....cant wait to see it :)

@dirge.exe (off topic)I dont know what your talking about, but there was plenty coverage of the 24 hours of daytona on speed.

11

yoo this year FD is gonna be craaaaaazy!!!! i can't wait! now drifting will finally ge tthe audience it deserves, and maybe some nascar guys will wake up and realize there is more to just watching cars drive at near 200 speeds in an endless circle...

12

Must post up Video when finished, would be good to see.

13

He should have the number 1 on his door!!!!!!!!

15

Dirge.exe If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around; does it make a sound?

When Drift Atlanta was first held at Road Atlanta; they groosly underestimated how many people would be there. They quickly woke up and smelled the money. When over 2,000 people showed up.

Rednecks love drag racing and NASCAR. The secret surprise is that they love drifting too.

They just have to go out to an event like Formula Drift once and they are hooked.

Drivers like Chris and and Sam can put out some heavy smoke.

When Sam and Taka whent at it. V10 vrs I4 for the 3rd set, people were going nutz!!

Is that little 86 going to knock out that big viper?

Thanks for that post !

Does the shooting was done only with Mark II or they was another cam like Ex3 or Red ?

Thanks,

Stephane.

Awesome little preview of the commercial. Pretty crazy that they are going to put it on during NASCAR events. You can already imagine some NASCAR fan (which I am, hey, it's racing and it beats golf) from some where deep in the south standing up with a busch light in hand and yelling, "hey man what the hell is that?..."

18

linh, you're the rice sartorialist

19

Great inside coverage of what is sure to be a great spot.

However, I think the Mother's Car Care/Falken Tire commercial that aired for like two years on Speed was the first commercial centered completely around drifting.

Either way, it is great promotion for the sport and we need more companies such as Mother's and NOS to step up and use the sport as a tool.

20

I was the sound mixer. It was a fun day although hard work. Chris and his boys were very cool and so were the agency people. Good times, but hey where's my picture?

BTW We shot on 3 Canon 5D's

i just really cant wait to see it i love that drink and love drifting two grate things in life!!!
