If you’ve been following Speedhunters this week, you may have noticed the return of a type of post that originated back in the early days of the site. The ‘Random Snap’ is a quick and easy way for us to share cool things that we come across while out and about, and covering events.
So for my first Random Snap in a very long time, here’s a car I spotted driving away from me late last night while on a shoot in Shibuya. You don’t really see too many older Skyline GT-Rs in Tokyo’s city center, let alone a BCNR33 that aside from what appeared to be an A’PEXi exhaust, was totally stock looking. Talk about a rare find! It was still sitting at its factory ride height on original wheels, all illuminated by the purple glow of one of the many large LCD screens that are peppered around the buildings in this area of the city. Luckily I had my camera in hand with a telephoto lens attached! It also reminded me that I need to start doing a lot more ‘Tokyo Speedhunting’ posts. What do you think?

This is great! Right up there with seeing a stock FD or late model Supra in the States. Stoked about the comeback of Random Snap.
The reflected lighting in shots around the Shibuya area always makes them look so surreal, like they're from a movie adaptation of a video game or something. I half expect to see overly-large-eyed girls in short school uniforms giggling at nothing in particular as the car passes by.
Um, that's not as dodgy in my head as it is typed out...
nice shot especially since you got it as it was driving away
I find keeping a car stock is the hardest thing to do. Our impulse as automotive enthusiast is to make things better, at least that's what we think anyway. So when I see a really clean example I always admire the people who fight the temptation to do what most of us all do. In the end a stock example most times will fetch more money while saving the owner a load of cash too. Perspective.
twentytwo12 Near stock? I'd say it's a fully stock 1991 V-Spec due to its 17 inch mesh wheels.
Looking at the photo, I feel some kind of a pristine aura on that stock R33
i'll be damned if i see stock 240sx
Random snaps suck.
Paolo Siega There are more than you'd expect honestly. People seem to think they are unicorn cars now but you just have to look for them. Don't get me wrong though, they will soon become very rare to find bone stock original.
twentytwo12 Gran Turismo
more 'Tokyo Speedhunting' posts are always welcome
Yurisminator Why?
Oh yes, you definitely should do more posts like this one!
CharlesChris15 true enough, but they're the kinds of cars that when people buy they instantly think of upgrades. It's pretty cool to see a bone stock one in person. It's much like seeing a stock EK or EG civic
Bellissima, e direi anche difficile da mantenere "stock"
Yes! We definetely need more Tokyo speedhunting posts! They are probably my favourite type of post! There's never too much posts form Japan
Paolo Siega Funny you mention that. A friend of mine is just back from Canada and wrote a couple of blog posts about all the random car sightings he seen whilst living there. A stock 240SX being one of them!

Sapporo....
I'm off to Japan in June. Anyone got any ideas for car related tourism. I won't have a car of my own to get around in, bullet train only...
Nice find and what about a featuree about Aki's R33 one day ?
One of my favorites GT-R's the R33 after the R34 of course hahah! BTW I agree... we need more Tokyo Speedhunting
I like this kind of style, like in the beginnings! Bring it back i say! I love the full features! But that quick snap, thats raw car culture. Love it!
Yurisminator i doubt so
simplyraka twentytwo12 Did have an aftermarket exhaust but the photo was pretty terrible. Definitely no photographic skills on my part.
yes more pics of random cars that make me drrooooll
Loveit. I always thought that this is what SPEEDHUNTERS was all about. Hunting cars in their natural habitat. Be it at shows, on the track or on the street.
Love the R33. I would love more Tokyo Speedhunting.
I've only seen one BCNR, that was one time coming out of Best Buy. he was speeding by. It was dark, around 6:00pm so I couldn't get a good look at it. But it sounded awesome. I have ye to see a BNR34
Tinj Yeah I'm so glad it's back too!
CJC_Matty There were definitely school girls giggling around lol
SonnyNguyen Yeah, I'd never be able to fight temptation!
Paolo Siega I'll hunt one out for you!
Yurisminator Why would that be?
mikum
Jocky Oh, it's coming...
Onecton Good to hear!
@deeeph That is precisely what we are about
beach_samurai Yesss
@r54dbnn In the US?
Yurisminator nope you're reaction is INVALID -_-
Reminds me of a scene from a grand turismo photo shoot. Wonderful composition, Dino!
"I need to start doing a lot more ‘Tokyo Speedhunting’ posts. What do you think?"
uhhhhh lemme guess here
*resounding cheers from the gallery*
yes.
I love these cityscape images. So chill.
33 GTR FTW! More random shots please!
@Alex There's bound to be a show on somewhere(just have a search), and even if it's at the other end of the country to where you are, that's the beauty of the bullets...easy day trip! Super AutoBacs and Up Garages can be found fairly easily by train plus other car shops. The Toyota Museum and Mazda Museum aren't too hard to get to(depending if you're going to be near by), or Mega Web and Historic Garage are a few other easier ones to get to in Tokyo.
SonnyNguyen I've only found the strength to leave my last 2 cars stock, and they're great fun just as they are. Getting older I guess.....but it won't last long as the mod bug will bite on the next car I'm sure.
Love it. This one's my favorite gtr.
D1RGE EXE cheers resoundingly!
simplyraka twentytwo12 not even tint
Spaghetti Don't worry!
D1RGE EXE LOL ok then
earmenau Arigatou!
EythanAldrich Yurisminator LOL rejection
Spaghetti SonnyNguyen kept my Legacy stock-ish. STI lowering springs, STI strut bar, DBA brakes, Project µ pads or else it was shit haha
Snaps like this are what makes your instagram so great. Keep it up
fantastic
more of this please. It's so atmospheric, like animals in their natural habitat not behind bars or in exhibitions
Hey Dino. I just got back from Japan after 3 weeks there. Walking around Tokyo you just see some unbelievable things. In a sea of Kei cars, taxis and people movers a R34 GTR will slowly cruise passed, maybe a jzx100 or AE86. A casual stroll through Ginza take a quick photo of a Lamborghini Aventador his missus just ducked into a shop to grab something and a Fd3s comes by looking like a time
attack car, middle age couple, wife sleeping in to passanger seat.
Odd that random snaps make a comeback as soon as there is a new editor in chief
mwahhahahaha.
Thanks man!
My favourite skyline GTR. Was a beast in the mid 90's
I think youu could compile your random snaps in a week or so into one post. I think that will be really cool
just wow! One like mine. Even with original rims. awesome!
Oh yes baby, gotta love the R33!
yea i like the vibe of night time Tokyo, kinda reminds me of Toronto. Definitely interested in seeing more.
OfficialGTRch : I approved too
earmenau Came here to say this.
Yes!!!! Do it please U0001f47b
Yes! Love this post, thank you Dino! It's gone straight on my FB feed

The last time I was in Japan.
Speedhunters Haven't you guys already posted that?
Speedhunters love seeing stock ones, so many are modded
Speedhunters really nice shot...awesome atmosphear...
Great shot Dino - will be bringing my D90 and a lens to Tokyo on the 28th to see if I have any luck in catching something similar.
If you get a chance come down to Mojiko Retro (Kitakyushu) on the 15th May - apparently its a reasonably sized car show, classic Japanese metal on display
Found this one in Ginza. Would be nice to find the owner and do a feature on it. Amazing car, and very well put together
Definite yes from me Dino, love this kind of simple gratification content.
Very much win in this post! Moar!
I took these 2 photos back in 2002 when visiting Tokyo for the Auto Salon show (I've got masses of photos of the cars and girls!). Myself and a guy I met from the US seemed to be only the foreign visitors for all the show public days! We got there there before it was well known I think! Apparently a few foreign magazines (including Max Power) were there the on the trade day. One evening cycling around the city I found these cars. I was surprised the Ferrari was road legal, it looked pure race car. Sorry for the photo quality, these were taken on good old 35mm film!!
random snaps suck
