News>>ft-86 To Be Called "fr-s"?

Once the ultra-hyped Toyota FT-86 hits the showroom floor, there's a chance it will be known as the Toyota FR-S. This is according to documents showing that Toyota has filed a trademark for the "FR-S' name in the United States and Canada.

Personally, I think FR-S has a nice ring to it. What about you?

Front Engine - Rear wheel drive - Subaru?

2

ok. what the hell????!!??!?!??!? this is what happens every time! a company makes an amazing looking concept with a breathtaking design and a sick name to go along with it, and then production time rolls around and suddenly cool design cues go out the window and they replace the cool, all-business-no-bull$#!t name with something watered-down and stupid. Point being, some things are just better left the way they are. look at nintendo. how many more units would they have sold if the wii was still called the revolution?? lots i bet.

3

It has a ring to it but i thought that keeping the "86" in the name was a good homage to the original car.

4

No no, like MR-S (name the 3rd generation MR2 was sold under in Japan). Front engine - Rear wheel drive Sports I assume.

5

FT86 as it is!

i have the feeling they are going to ruin the car.

1st they were talking about pushing the lunch of the car a couple of years, they were talking about making it a hybrid, now some wierd name.

i guess is not going to be my next car after all.

6

i was kinda hoping this was gonna be my first new car. but if these rumours about it changing are true, i'm not gonna go anywhere near a toyota dealership

7

Whatever sounds closer to LF-A sounds good to me :)

8

meh... they need to drop that Subaru boxer engine imo, never mind the name , still looks cool tho

9

not a bad name. Front engine rear drive sport

10

i own a ae corolla. and i approve of this.

11

FT-86 is so much better, but I'll go with "FR-S"

12

i think it's a fine name and while the concept being called FT86 clearly demonstrated links to the original AE86, let's remember that 86's are also NOT called AE86! they're called "Corolla" or "Sprinter". The homage has been made, we needn't draw it out any further.

14

MR-S worked for their MR car.....

so i guess FR-S will work for an FR car

15

I think FR-S name is more cool than FT86 name.

Just another suggest. How about FR-2 name for FT-86?

16

Finally some reassurance that my life doesn't suck. Had a chance to spy a test mule at work today and this thing is going to be cool! Unsure about the styling but it's got the right parts on it.

17

Not as cool as FT-86 though.

18

man changin the name again, lol

19

they should just make it the new corolla... and do away with the garbage corolla they have now...

20

hey that's a nice toyota avalon

21

Very intrigued I'll say.

I like it.

Better be in about under 20k and gasoline.not no stupid hybrid sh*t

22

Whatever. Just give it to us already!!!!

23

Ultra hyped usually means Ultra Letdown for the consumer. Think GTR with all the gay restrictions put on it. I will keep my Silvia thank you very much.

24

Keep the 86 name!

25

why not FR-86?

26

Who cares about the name? I'm pretty sure all of you would still drive it even if it was called the Toyota "Crap". If it looked like this, I'd drive it no matter what it's called :)

27

Massive respect to the first person to put a rotary in it lol

13BT

28

i see aftermarket ft-86 badges in the future...

29

i think that ft-86 is to close to ae86 but i think its better than fr-s

30

its all good... the suggested name is ok... i just wonder will our kids be talking about this car all those years down the line when production stops and parts are scarce.. a la AE86?? - love the car by the way..

31

ft-86 is what they should stick with. isnt this supose to bring back the legendary ae86?

i wonder what the rrp will be when released, i want one.. especially a rear wheel drive car sounding like a subaru

32

Well atleast it's not called FR-Hybrid

33

As long as they don't bugger up the 'FR-S' concept (Front Rear Sports) I will still get one, they look really good and it is so refreshing to see Japanese manufacturers returning to the fun-to-drive car ideas of the 80's and 90's.

34

don't do it toyota!!! please don't produce this car. why couldn't you just make a small light rear wheel drive manual trans car with roll up windows and no sunroof? why did you need to weigh it down with luxury? why did you need to scale it up in size? that thing is a boat.

35

whatever they call it i think most enthusiasts will be uber pissed when the production car doesn't look anything like the concept. they changed the lf-a headlights from what they ran in the nurburgring in its pre production form to now... i'd expect this to have odd looking rounded headlights as well. and no drive by wire on this baby please, we had enough dead toyotas because of electronically controlled accelerators...

36

i want it. but in russia it will cost so lot, that it would be impossible to by it for me =((

37

call it ST-2012

38

i dont care what its called, as long as this doesnt go HYBRID

39

bring this car out already, puhleeze!

40

Imagine Subaru getting a second chance to produce the 22B. That's basically what this is. Toyota doesn't have as much control over this thing as you guys think they do.

41

What ever happened to PROPPER names.... now adays cars tend to have the most DULL, UNINSPIRED, dreary, rubbish names. :

LF-A, GS430, FX37, TSX, 335i, TC, XB, bloody hell I could be here for hours...

Point is, this car deserves a proper name... and its not like Toyota cant give a car a great name: Supra, Chaser, Soarer, Sprinter Trueno , Blade, Harrier , all fantastic sounding.

If toyota wants a piece of the future, It mustn't the past.

42

Disappointed.

43

Seriously? How is this related to a 22B other than being a coupe?

44

would have still love the FT-86 name to stick with it atleast with the 86 paying homage to the old car but FR-S is still nice

46

FR-S = FRONT ENGINE REAR DRIVE SUBARU FTW!!!!!! TOYOTA CANT HELP IT BUT TO KEEP ON "MOVING FORWARD" EVEN IF YOU DONT WANT IT TOO!!!!!!!

47

I really hope this isn't going to be the hybrid they have posted on the Toyota website. I don't see anything there for this car. All I see is an FT Hybrid. Toyota is bound to ruin another good idea. I hope it doesn't happen.

48

That thing certainly is damn sexy. :)

49

@ Dylan

It's a flat four powered 2-door. Subaru's version will undoubtedly have a turbo option and will probably be the next STI. I don't know that for sure but that is some of the speculation I've heard. I doubt it will be hybrid as it's undergoing some final stage testing with a non-hybrid powertrain.

Looking forward to the FF-S
