Last month we received the news that Toyota is phasing out its Scion brand after 13 years of existence in the US and Canadian markets. Naturally, one of the biggest questions enthusiasts had was about the fate of the Scion FR-S – aka the North American version of the Toyota 86.
We need not worry though, because today Toyota officially announced the 2017 Toyota 86 for the region. And along with a new name, the ’17 Toyota 86 is sporting more power and some fresh styling.
Set to make its debut at the New York International Auto Show next week, the Toyota 86 marks the first significant refresh for the platform since it debuted for the 2013 model year. Along with revised front and rear fascias and an updated interior, the 86 will also have modest bumps in horsepower and torque – now 205hp and 156ft-lbs respectively.
It’s only normal to assume that these changes will also be seen on the Toyota 86 sold in the rest of the world, but for us here in North America the more traditional Toyota name and the updates seem like a nice step in the right direction.

I honestly would have been happy with them just dropping it. I personally like and think it fits the scion brand and what it stood for more so then it fits the direction Toyota has been heading in my opinion.
That being said the additional power bump sure it's nice but the car is meant to be improved upon from the get-go. Sure it's nice but that's a laughable bump if you ask me. Clearly a vehicle they intend to keep around for some time making minimal improvements along the way.
Sure it's the same car but I'm happier saying I have a Scion FR-S than a bra/or 86.
And yes I know the blah blah blah you will come at me with.
blackjak It never was a Scion. It's a Toyota/Subaru engineered car built by Subaru. "Scion" was just marketing to make people think they were getting something different. And since the 2008 crash all the Scion dealers have been rolled into the Toyota dealers anyway because it's more cost efficient.
They need to make it turbo from factory...and put it below the entry Impreza WRX in therms of power. Around the 230hp.. they need it if they hope to compete with ford and honda...cause currently toyota cars are boring and way to sober.
I miss the Toyota of back in the day.
Rear lights and wheels are little better but that front bumper ...
All comments I read about it on other forums turn around fish face (for the kindest one).
Hope that at least, the "laughable hop" will erase the torque deep (yeah I'm fine with staying NA, I had a lot of fun with my BRZ as it is, except the TD, personnaly )
For many of us this comes as no change as we've only known the car as the 'Toyota '86'.
The power bump is only limited to the US spec cars. Rest of the world soldiers on with the 200 hp engine.
I personally think this new bumper makes it look strange.

The front bumper looks weird. And the boxer engine needs to go too. I would love it to have an inline 4 in this.
Front end looks like a grumpy old man with his dentures removed. The old version was better. The BRZ is still the best looking of the 'triplets' now 'twins.'

Guess with the 2017 model the 370Z will get the title back again (It used to be my #1 before the GT86 came out. Since 2012 it was in 2nd place and shared this position since 2014/15 with the current Mazda 3)

tyleredwards888 They weren't that ugly. In my opinion, they really messed up with this one. It just looks too sporty. The beautiful thing about the FRS/ 86/ BRZ (whatever you want to call it) is that it had that "stock" look. It gave you alot of space to modify, and change parts around. Now I'm not saying this one won't have parts to change and such, but it already looks like a mean sports car. Not sure if you get my point

Not a fan of that front end, I will admit to that completely vain and otherwise illogical opinion. But then the power "gain". Are you kidding Toyota/Subaru? At what point can we just come out and admit that it's pathetically underpowered? Sure, it's light, but that's really the only thing saving it at this point. You can't put big tires on it without significant investment in the motor, or you lose the whole fun factor of the car (it's slidiness).
So you're either left with a car that's fun (kind of) around town, but a dog on the freeway, track, and even autocross (ask me how I know), but looks.... underwhelming is the nicest way that I can put it,

You can make it look the way you want (on a budget) and be left with something that is just a cruiser and has lost its real fun.
Or
Have a lot of money, spend it on this to make it not as fast as the Mustang you would have bought stock.
It weighs as much as a late 90's Integra GSR, but has more power and torque, and people still complain. What a world we live in. The front end redesign is ugly, though.

I was a huge fan of this vehicle. The revised front end looks terrible. I hope this isn't the final product. Otherwise, this new look will kill the hopes of any future generations. Anyone remember the 2001 Toyota Celica........what a tragedy. I hope someone from Toyota reads this!
