Japan Does California: Cal Flavor 2012

Hello Speedhunters! This is Hiroaki “KAGE” Kageyama from The KAGE BLOG in Tokyo, Japan. I would like to share with you guys some coverage from an event which called CalFlavor which was held at Aichi’s Chubu International Airport on October 21st.

The concept of CalFlavor is to capture the feel of an American style car show in Japan. The cars at participating in this event include many Rods, Kustoms, and Lowriders as well as Minitrucks, USDM style cars, air-cooled VWs, and more. In total, there were over 500 cars that came out. Of that group I’d like to share a few highlights.

The Sunday of the show brought sunny skies, a perfect temperature and a great location to top it off.

The venue at the airport is large so there was plenty of space between the cars. People spent a lot of time preparing their machines for the event.

Central Japan is largely known for its hardcore Kustom style, and that tradition could be seen at this event.

There were colorful local cars that came out…

…as well as manywhich came from Tokyo, some 300 kilometers away.

Here’s a Shoebox Ford that’s been heavily altered from its factory lines.

This heavily chopped ’63 Impala is a good example of Central Japan’s signature Kustom style.

The Hot Rod participants included everything from traditional style to hard kustom jobs.

If it has airbags, it’s gotta be good!

When it comes to Lowriders, there were extravagantly painted Bombs, which are another symbol of Central Japan car style…

…as well as a variety of street style hoppers.

Of course the show would not be complete without pin-ups!

Whether they were professional or amateur, it was busy day for photographers.

If you are a Speedhunters reader you must know that the USDM scene in Japan is really big lately.

There were right hand drive models customized in USDM style…

…as well as customized examples of imported left-drive USDM cars.

You could also see a few slammed Japanese classics in the mix.

It’s always important to think outside the box.

There were so many different people demonstrating their own takes on “US Style” applied to many different vehicles.

While there are so many different forms of US custom style in Japan today, it’s Minitrucks that represent one of Japan’s earliest forms of this movement.

Today Japanese enthusiasts are always researching the latest in American custom trends trying to build their machines to a higher level.

The US custom scene in Japan is driven by the enthusiasm of young people and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Like Minitrucks, air-cooled VWs in Japan have long been influenced by the American scene.

Traditional Cal Look VWs have been popular in Japan for a long time, but recently the heavily customized and slammed style is becoming bigger and bigger among the younger generation.

For this genre of VWs, a maximum slammed stance is always the key.

Even with cars from so many different makes and eras, the event was dominated by a shared feeling of admiration and appreciation for pure American custom style.

The event was organized by Shimizu-san of The LOCAL HERO and this is the first time he has ever attempted such an event. He was on the move throughout the day.

All of his hard work resulted in the show being a huge success.

If you ever have the chance, please come to Cal Flavor and enjoy Japan’s rich custom scene.  Arigatou Gozaimashita.

3

That last shot deserves to be on a wall. Jaw-dropping.

4

Japan does everything better, and I know i'll say it again

5

Haha its pretty cool how we all take inspiration from each other and form this global automotive culture! Something special.

6

Corvette's and Mustang's I have seen in Japan, so it is surprising and cool to see Monte Carlo's also.

7

Very nice article, this event proves that cars are a universal language spoken around the world. Every part of the world has its own flavor, accent, and will borrow from other parts to make a new style all on its own. I like seeing events like this where everyone is unique and not trying too hard to fit in with a certain crowd, just an appreciation of cars in general.

8

Do not have much to write only register that is phenomenal. Congratulations to the entire team of photographers and Speedhunters.

9

spotlight/feature on 'viejitos' and that vw pair!  so fresh and so clean (clean)!

@BlackJacket And of the Pin up hot rod pic, would be awesome!

Really enjoy seeing the Japanese interpretation of American customization. Their interpretation of the pin-up is pretty nice too! I attended the Mooneyes show on Odaiba when I was in Japan last month, and enjoyed it very much despite the heavy rain. On a future trip, I will have to attend a Cal Flavor event.

Please desktop the last shot that's just pure sex!

15

On the picture with the primer Karmann Ghia, what is the car in front of it? Looks almost like a Corvair.

16

Excellent coverage Kageyama-san.  Very cool looking event, many sweet cars.   Let's have some desktops!!

17

@MattAtDoyle It does look a little like a 1960-1964 Corvair coupe from that angle. But it's actually a "Type 34" VW Karmann Ghia.

18
