After a rather impressive debut at the last round of the Formula D Asian series in Jakarta, Fredric has had a little time to think about what was a great and fun weekend for all involved. I thought I’d ask him a few questions about his time in Indonesia, driving one of the cars that [...]

Danny George just finished his rookie year in Formula Drift, and he did it in a Mazda Miata. We all know it’s the little roadster that could, and many have tried to drift it but few have succeeded. Danny has some unfinished business with the Formula Drift series and he wants to come back next year. I met up with him at SEMA to see what he is all about.

After an exciting final, the tire smoke has settled and the Formula D Asian series has a new champion, Daigo Saito. On my way back home to Tokyo I had time to reflect on the time I have spent in Jakarta covering my very first Formula D round. Despite the series being still in its [...]

Drifting is a sport I have seen grow from small local events, and hit it big, becoming an internationally recognized form of racing. I spent close to ten years covering D1 in Japan, and I have seen it all unfold in front of my eyes, observing it blossom into the freshest form of motorsport out [...]

I did not think it was possible, but the Formula Drift finals just keep getting better and better. This was my favorite drift event this year by far. Race tracks like Spa Francorchamps and the Nürburgring have such rich history and they are very visually appealing, but Irwindale has its moments where I just stop [...]

Formula Drift at Irwindale is easily the biggest event of the year on the drift calendar, and I was honoured to be invited over to join the Speedhunters team for this great event. So, for me it was direction Los Angeles for the last round of the championship. Europe now appears rather small in comparison; everything [...]

Last weekend saw the conclusion of another incredible season of Formula D. A new champion was crowned, the action was intense and the atmosphere was electric. This however was of no importance to me as I wasn’t there. Again.
Actually I lie, I’m just still upset at missing Irwindale for the umpteenth time, despite it being on my bucket list for so many years. This year was different though as I got experience the full event, albeit vicariously, through the #IAMTHESPEEDHUNTER tag on Instagram.

I always like to go to the track early on race weekends to get some nice shots of teams setting up. It was the morning of qualifying day at the Formula Drift finals. I heard the unmistakable sound of a turbo Ford Fiesta and being the nosy journalist that I truly am, I decided to investigate. This is what I saw. [...]

I’d wager that last Saturday the largest gathering of car enthusiasts in North America, possible the world, converged at Irwindale Speedway. For those twenty four hours the course was not only the home of the final round of Formula D, but also had a paddock full of vendors, a parking lot bursting with street sweepers [...]

It’s Saturday afternoon at Irwindale Speedway. The gates have just opened and drift fans are lining up to get inside the track. An endless procession of cars pulls into the parking lot under traffic direction for the Irwindale Police Department. At this moment I’m walking away from the track and toward the parking lot with my camera in hand, glancing down the rows of vehicles. I must have looked pretty strange.

The smoke has finally settled and for the first time in Formula Drift history an FD rookie wins the Championship. Daigo Saito won the championship by a mere 19.5 points after finishing in 1st place at Irwindale. He has said time and time again that he would not try to compete in Formula Drift until he had [...]

As exciting as it’s been to witness the expansion of Speedhunters this year, I couldn’t help but feeling a bit left out when it comes to the big events. Sure it was great fun to read the tales from those amazing events in Europe, but I’ve been patiently awaiting for the USA to get the full scale Speedhunters treatment this year.
There was Gatebil, there was Spa, there was Silverstone, and now there’s Irwindale. The wait is over.

I feel like I have been planning for this one competition all year, but I am still far from ready even as qualifying day comes to a close. I don’t think I will ever be prepared, as there is just so much to cover and to see. There were so many driver entries that they actually had to limit [...]

It’s no secret around here that the Speedhunters are always pumped up for the final round of Formula D at Irwindale. This year however there is more than ever for us to be excited about as the Speedhunters have a few special things planned for the house of drift. Over the next few days we’ll [...]

Just like being the referee in soccer or ice hockey, being a professional drift judge is not easy. They always take the brunt of blame when a driver loses or scores low points in qualifying. Someone has to do it – and these three brave souls have stepped up to the plate. They are the [...]
