IN THE THUNDERDOME: THE RS-R 86 DEBUT

IN THE THUNDERDOME: THE RS-R 86 DEBUT

I’ll be honest: when I was a kid, I had absolutely no clue where life would take me. I did have dreams, however, and as I’ve mentioned before I can still remember the first time I watched Days of Thunder back in the ’90s. Fifteen years later, I am driving for multiple and very iconic teams [...]

FREDRIC AASBØ: HOW WE BATTLED DAIGO SAITO

FREDRIC AASBØ: HOW WE BATTLED DAIGO SAITO

In my opinion, Daigo Saito exploding onto the Formula Drift scene in 2012 was the greatest thing to happen in the world of drifting in recent years. I have known Saito since 2009, but seeing him school everyone in the art of tandem and smoke out every single FD track across the US was incredible. [...]

FREDRIC AASBØ: BEHIND THE WHEEL OF RS-R’S V8 86

FREDRIC AASBØ: BEHIND THE WHEEL OF RS-R’S V8 86

Following up on Dino’s excellent feature of the brand new Team RS-R V8 86, it was clear that the build and the story truly engaged you Speedhunters readers. Going over the comments, many of you seemed to really appreciate the ingenuity and the creativity demonstrated by RS-R, and to others the car is “just another [...]

BEHIND THE MASK: BATTLING TWO THOUSAND TWELVE

BEHIND THE MASK: BATTLING TWO THOUSAND TWELVE

Two years ago I used to dream about bringing home one of those very special Formula Drift carbon fiber trophies. Not only would it be the ultimate dream come true for any competition drift driver, but more importantly it would be the ultimate testament to all the family, friends and sponsors that have helped out [...]

AASBØ GETTING READY FOR TRAX: LEARNING THE GAME

AASBØ GETTING READY FOR TRAX: LEARNING THE GAME

This summer has been flat out crazy. Ever since seemingly getting the 86-X ready just in time for Gatebil, we have been hard at work. In Norway, the 86-X needed plenty of TLC after I basically tore the whole thing apart at our first outing. In the US, we have been fighting technical gremlins with [...]

THE ANGRY BIRD: UNDER THE SURFACE OF THE 86-X

THE ANGRY BIRD: UNDER THE SURFACE OF THE 86-X

My first memory of anything Hachiroku, and also anything drifting, started with a gentleman named Katsuhiro Ueo. I am sure many of you remember those short, gritty, AMAZING drifting video clips to first come out of Japan. I know this is technically an AE85, and not a REAL 86, but this was what started it [...]

86X PROGRESS PART FIVE – GIT R DONE!

86X PROGRESS PART FIVE – GIT R DONE!

We are three days away from roll-in at Gatebil Rudskogen. From the small glimpses I get from the outside world, it seems like people are eagerly awaiting the craziness that is about to go down deep inside the woods an hour south of Oslo, Norway. In the mancave, things are moving along at a rapid [...]

86-X PROGRESS PART FOUR – ALL CAGED UP

86-X PROGRESS PART FOUR – ALL CAGED UP

Part three of the 86-X build story had ended with me arriving in New Jersey for Formula Drift Round 4. Qualifying in third, we started off the event strong, but with the help of a drivetrain failure in the final turn of our Top 16 battles we ended our competition weekend early.

86-X PROGRESS PART THREE – ALL IN THE DETAILS

Right now, we are twenty days away from Gatebil July and people from all over the world are involved in getting the Speedhunters Toyota 86-X ready for its debut. These are some of the cogs in the machinery: In Japan, Miura-San and his guys at TRA Kyoto are currently getting ready to ship out the [...]

86-X PROGRESS PART TWO – TRANSFORMATION

86-X PROGRESS PART TWO – TRANSFORMATION

Hello, fellow Speedhunters! After months of planning, part one of the Speedhunters Toyota 86-X build ended with me picking up this GT 86 from Toyota Norway. I brought the car straight to our small shop in the outskirts of Ski, Norway and called my friend Espen, who is a Toyota repair specialist. It took one [...]

Builds: The 86-X Project Part One – The Big Day

Builds: The 86-X Project Part One – The Big Day

Four years ago, I was working 9 to 5 as a graphic designer. I had always wondered what it was like to chase my dream, and one day I found myself putting everything else behind and putting the little that I had left into this disease called drifting. In hindsight, it has allowed me to [...]

ANNOUNCING THE 2JZ SPEEDHUNTERS TOYOTA 86-X

ANNOUNCING THE 2JZ SPEEDHUNTERS TOYOTA 86-X

What we are about to announce has been a work in progress over the last two and a half years, yet it hasn’t technically even started. I’ll explain: Just as the first Toyota FT 86 renders started popping up, I immediately thought to myself that this is the drift car of the new generation. Built [...]

FREDRIC AASBO: ATLANTA PODIUM: THE DARKSIDE

FREDRIC AASBO: ATLANTA PODIUM: THE DARKSIDE

People that know me well say that I can be pretty soft. If Vaughn Gittin Jr. is Captain America and my team mate Matt Powers is an animal, I am definitely mild in manners and pretty bland in comparison.

But although I believe strongly in being a humble competitor and a good sport, people that know me TRULY well know that sometimes there is a colder, more calculated Fredric lurking in the background.

When Formula Drift Round 2 at Road Atlanta came around, we knew that it was time to bring out that darker Fredric.
