More car photos from the Mooneyes Irwindale Show... I like the colorways on this black and olive green metallic custom up front. Like I mentioned before, I'm not a fan of flames, but this car attracted me because of the non-traditional colors and the cleanliness of the whole thing. I can appreciate the hard work and planning that went into this car, even though it may not necessarily be my style. Notice the spiderweb pinstriping by the window and the top mounted mirrors... cool! Now THIS is totally...

As many of you already know, the art of pinstriping is very much connected to hot rod culture. Back in the day, before it was commonplace to use die cut vinyl plotters for making stickers for cars, people used to take their cars to have their favorite designs pinstriped - hand painted onto the cars! This being said, pinstriping became popular for putting numbers, sponsor names, racing stripes, and other designs onto cars... and even made it to the helmets of the drivers. Up above, I was able to get...

After attending the Mooneyes Christmas Party at Irwindale Speedway this past weekend, I think I discovered that I've become a big fan of super slammed lowboy rat rods; carefully planned and tastefully done of course. One of my favorite display vehicles from the show this weekend was definitely this rat rod truck, which was parked at the Cragar Wheels booth. This truck is part of the "Axle Draggers" crew, which is apparently from the South Side... of LA? Or SGV? Not sure. Wherever they're...

As promised, here are more photos from the Mooneyes Christmas Party at Irwindale... it has been tough trying to process these photos quickly, because every day since the Mooneyes event at Irwindale, I've had all day photo shoots. Today I have another car to shoot while we have a short break from the rain! Whew things are busy right now! I absolutely love the style and patina of the super low suicide rod above... from the cream colored paint to the combination of surface rust and cool pinstriping...

I hope you all had a great weekend, because I know I sure did. It started getting colder in Southern California this week, and it even rained a couple times; soon it might be time to pack away our shorts and summer gear for the winter. Even though I know most of us think of drifting when we think of Irwindale , this weekend I went back to our familiar home track in Irwindale for a different event altogether - the Annual Mooneyes Christmas Party and Drag Race ! I need to be honest with you all. This...

I have a lot of work ahead of me with all my Rev Speed Time Attack photos to sort through, but before that I wanted to post up some photos from last weekend's Yokohama Hot Rod and Custom Car Show. The machine in this photo here was my personal favorite of the entire show. It's a V8-powered gasser built out of a vintage Toyota Stout pick up truck. It has all the typical gasser features like a dropped straight axle in the front and headers protruding through the fenders. This thing should be cool enough to make even the staunchest Japanese car purist appreciate an American V8-powered Toyota. ...

I feel kind of strange right now. One part of me is focused tomorrow's Rev Speed Time Attack at Tsukuba Circuit, but the other part of me is still in "hot rod mode" in the wake of Sunday's Yokohama Hot Rod and Custom Car Show. This kind of variety is what I love about cars.
Anyways, here's another batch of photos from this weekend's show. The car above is the '57 Chevy Gasser built by Jimmy Shine of SoCal Speed Shop. You probably read about him in Rod's features back in October. As you can see, the Chevy was quite the attraction at the show. This was one of several US-built cars and bikes that were shipped to Japan just for this event....

Yokohama is one of the epicenters of Japan's hot rodding and custom car scene, and there is no event bigger than the Mooneyes Yokohama Hot Rod and Custom Car Show which has been held annually for 17 years. The 2008 edition of the show was held on Sunday and I headed to Yokohama to have a look. I sort of a Mooneyes fanboy, so I had been anxiously awaiting this one for while. As you can see by the photo, the show is one of the coolest, and most unique car events in Japan. Yes, that guy is pinstriping a girl's thighs......

Ok last SEMA post for me… I’m on yet another plane and will be landing in a few hours to meet our British photographic sensei John Brooks at the Los Angeles airport. We’ll then saunter over to Shelby LA to pick up the NFS edition Shelby Terlingua. This will be followed by a blast up the I5 to Button Willow Raceway, to see the USA’s top Time Attack cars in action. Should be good! Anyway, back to the subject at hand…. Last week I was marching from one side of the SEMA...

A lot of people in the Hot Rod world don’t like the term “Rat Rod”….. to them this usually means a car of poor build quality which is unsafe for any sort of road use. It can also mean a car that only half pretends to be a return to traditional purist rodding styles… or perhaps a counter-reaction to blinged out “cheque-book Rods” Another term coming into use is “Suicide Rod”. These are Hot Rods that have taken the look and feel of old school...

The first time I saw this car, it was at the Toyota booth at SEMA. Since I spent soooo much time drooling and just plain jocking this FJ45, I was obviously very happy to run into it again this year at JCCS. This car is a definite head turner because at first, you’re really not sure what kind of hot rod this is, and become even more confused when you see TOYOTA stamped on it. Even in the world of highly modified classic cars, this one-off specially built FJ45 Low-Boy is an extremely rare breed...

One item that was quite noticeable while touring the SO-CAL Speed Shop was that most of the guys working on the cars looked like they should be on MTV abusing musical instruments. At what point in time did all the new school hot-rodders start to look like rock stars? Somewhere along the line, wrenching on vintage american cars and making regular visits to the tattoo parlor started to go hand-in-hand. Of these coolguyswhoalsohappentobuildamazingrods , there was one person that stood out from the others...

Know your roots.
You could in some way, say that this is an important facet of what Speedhunters is all about. We are interested in, not only the latest and greatest automotive styles, events, releases and projects from about the world, but are also very committed to uncovering and cataloguing the past. To see where car culture is going it certainly helps to know where it's been. ...

A Custom Car expert and JDM enthusiast born and living in the wrong country. Well, that pretty much sums up Rik Hoving and me. A few weeks ago, Rod told me he had a special assignment for me. There was a guy living in Holland that had built up the largest internet Custom Car photo collections anywhere. I'm not a person who is an expert on these American Customs but because Rik lives in Holland it meant that the communication was much easier. Another cool thing was that I could learn a thing or...

You know I'm a bit in a state of shock putting this piece together... I only spend 2 days collaborating with the photographer, David Lister, but have been supplied with literally hundreds of amazing photos. It's a bit of a challenge to edit them down tbh! A good place to be in no doubt.... So you'll likely have seen the retro funny car story we published a few days back... now let's wrap up our coverage of the 2008 California Hot Rot Reunion with a look at the other drag classes and...

A few days ago, Rod sent me an email about some artwork he saw on display at last weekend's California Hot Reunion at Famoso. I visited the website of the artist and came away quite impressed. His name is James Owens and he refers to his automotive artwork as "car noir". Drawing a lot of inspiration from vintage movie posters, and artists like Norman Rockwell and Dave Stevens, Owens' paintings offer up stylistic scenes that James describes as "one part hot rod, one part film noir, and one part Pulp Fiction". That sounds like a perfect and description to me....

Through my experiences photographing and writing about cars, I have been introduced to a lot of really interesting people who come from a lot of different backgrounds. One of them is Jae Bueno and his blog www.jaebueno.com. I first remember looking at the photos in his Flickr gallery and being very impressed with the quality and vibrancy with which they portray the Southern California automotive life. With our focus on SoCal this month, we thought it would be a fine time to showcase Jae and a little bit of his photographic work....

Way back when Speedhunters launched, I wrote a brief introduction about car culture in Japan and the the diverse automotive styles that can be found here. One of my goals has been to show that there is much more to Japanese car life than just the "JDM" stuff you hear about most often in the auto media. Obviously, a large part of our audience are primarily interested in the traditional sort of Japanese tuning, but I hope showing some of these other "sub-cultures" iwill expand people's appreciation of cars in general and help them grow as enthusiasts. And that brings us to a look at the world of traditional kustom car building and hot rodding in Japan......
