Another week of Speedhunting from all around the world is almost upon us, but before we get into that it’s time to take a quick look at some of the videos we’ve been checking out over the past 7 days.
Let’s get started with a short film centered on Ebisu Circuit titled Back 2 Basics…
If you want a taste of grassroots drifting in the motherland, and more so from the eyes of non-Japanese drivers who compete in events at Ebisu (like the original and world famous Drift Matsuri), then this nicely shot and edited film needs to be watched. Right now.
Next up, it’s a cinematic-style clip from Pennzoil in which a Ferrari 488 GTB plays the lead role. Who wouldn’t want to take this Joyride?
Sung Kang’s FuguZ has had plenty of airtime since it debuted at the 2015 SEMA Show, including a full feature right here on Speedhunters. So it was really only a matter of time before the Fast & Furious star and his Rocket Bunny-kitted and RB26-powered Datsun 240Z ended up on Jay Leno’s Garage. And here it is.
We’re going to wrap things up this week with some very cool in-car Porsche turbo action from a recent idlers meeting at Tsukuba Circuit…

Porsche video was cool, but man was he way off his lines. Totally overdriving the entries and trying way to hard to catch the purple Porsche
"His lines were way off" - sorry, I cometelu disagree. He wasn't mistake free, but generally speaking, there was nothing wrong with his lines. When you are that close to someone's gearbox, you need to take alternate lines. If you take the "ideal" line, or same line as the car you are chasing, you will never get passed unless you have a massive straight line advantage.
The purple Porsche clearly had an HP/torque advantage exiting corners, while the onboard car was clearly better on the brakes and mid corner. The driver was using alternate lines to try to build a run, but the purple Porsche was using the classic "park it on the apex" technique, and using his strengths to rocket out of the corners.
The only place where the onboard driver was perhaps "over driving" the car was the left handed Dunlop Corner under the bridge. But even there, it looks like he was trying an aggressive, Alonso-esque, "chuck the front end in" approach to try to maximize weight transfer and lateral grip to build a run and out brake Mr Purple into the final hairpin, as that was the section of track where the onboard car was strongest. It just wasn't working out in practice the way it works in theory. Perhaps the car wasn't set up for that kind of aggressive turn-in.
There was also a few incidents where the onboard car had to compromise his line to avoid contact, as Mr Purple was quite aweful on the brakes.
Side note, the wang on that R33 was hilarious!!

People forget to realize that when skilled drivers are in front of you they are trying to take away your ideal aka "fastest" line you can take to potentially ruin your rhythm and slow you down, Best thing you can do is try to get your nose in the inside position that will delay his turn in to hit the apex eariler in return you will have some what of a chance to catch up on the straights since both of you will be hitting the later apex... but the purple car is just on a serious blocking line!
I could watch the Idlers videos all day long. I think it's some of the most visceral racing footage I have ever seen.
