Fuel Injection Not Required

The great thing about time attack at a grassroots level is that it’s something you can totally make yours. To assume that everyone is in it to break records is pretty silly; most are in it for the fun, the thrill of driving and the satisfaction of slowly evolving ones car without fear of being looked down upon.

It’s because of this that we see so many weird and wonderful things come out of Japan, and the Total Car Service USUI Mazda Roadster is just that.

BattleEvome-16-29

Call it the result of years of evolution, because this is an NA-chassis Roadster like you’ve never seen before. Power and performance aside, the owner and the shop entrusted to build and maintain it have addressed every single aspect of the Mazda, starting with the aerodynamics.

BattleEvome-16-32

On top of the underlying aero additions, which you could classify as bolt-on or off-the-shelf, much one-off work has been added to help the little lightweight Mazda slice through the air.

BattleEvome-16-30

That treatment extends to the sides and onto the rear with the extractor you can see here. It’s all constructed out of sheet aluminium, as carbon fiber would be far too exotic for a grassroots project like this one.

BattleEvome-16-33

Nothing is left to chance, so each time the car was waiting in the paddock for its next outing at Battle Evome last weekend, the owner wrapped the tyres up in heat blankets.

BattleEvome-16-35

Because, why waste a couple of laps to warm up your rubber when you can head out with tyres almost up to the perfect temperature.

BattleEvome-16-36

The cockpit is Star Trek-worthy to say the least. There is so much happening, perhaps more than there needs to be, but this is how the owner envisioned it, and this is how he arranged it all. If he’s happy, who is anyone to criticise?

BattleEvome-16-34

His passenger is a little custom-made aluminium fuel cell, which carries just enough gas for a few hot laps around Tsukuba.

BattleEvome-16-38

Under the carbon vented bonnet is a fully-built motor that breathes through a pair of side-draught Weber carburettors. I was told this gives amazing response and throttle adjustability when negotiating the trickier bits of the circuit, and as you can imagine the sound is pretty wild.

BattleEvome-16-31

The aero packages is completed with a massive GT wing that’s supported and connected directly to the chassis via a pair of aluminium stays.

So what does all this custom work equate to? The best lap the owner/driver managed on the day was a 1’01″164 – a great result for what is quite an underpowered car in comparison to the majority of the Battle Evome field. 26th fastest out of 45 entrants is one successful day at the track if you ask me.

The crazy, weird, awesome, little car pretty much sums up just why I love grassroots time attack so much. Cool car and cool write up, thanks Dino! Needed something that made me smile today!

2

Thank you Dino for doing a spotlight on this wonderful roadster! Ever since I saw this car on the internet last year I was blown away by how far one can go with a little Miata and an extreme passion for racing.

3

Thanks for the spotlight, i saw this car within s battle evome article on another website and thought it looked really impressive. What is the estimated power of this car?

4

Wao! This miata just shat on a 996 gt3. Really interested in seeing the power figures, can't be making over 200... So awesome

5

On the last picture the Evo and S15 look so bloody aggressive

6

There was also a black NA competing this time last year that proved to be a little quicker than this car, seems it's disappeared off the scene though.

7

I have the inspiration now to run my naturally aspirated MX5 NA6 at World Time Attack 2016 and be faster than 2015!

TheLazyViking Thanks!

if it's a mazda i'm liking it

14

thought it was an s2000 at first

15

damn another car ruined with carbs. honestly if a car came with fuel injection, it shouldn't downgrade to dated tech.

16

These cars are running competitive times, I don't understand how you'd assume it is ruined. I doubt you've ever tuned anything outside of something plug and play, so chill haha.

17

And you say it has carburettors?

18

Fuel injection is inherently better, so I get what the guy means. Personally I'd get an opened up ecu and play with inlet tract length rather than put carbs on it... But clearly they aren't holding the car back too much or it couldn't post such quick times! Also, as Dino said in the text this is not a mega bucks build, so fair play to the owner
...plus I bet it sounds awesome since mx5s sound cool straight out the box!

19

love when speedhunters go to track day event, so many cool features !

20

Smiggins  me too haha until i saw the engine

21

where im from grassroots means the owner built their own car

22

awesomefearwave It's not all about the tech it's about making their car their own and if he believes putting carbs in will help him drive the way he wants so be it. There would only be a good reason why he chose this over EFI when he's already spent so much on a TA car

23

Ruined? Are you a forest gump?

24

Is he using a tablet as a taco and speedometer? if so, how?

25

I don't understand why so much hate for Carbs. Carbs are awesome. Fuel injected is more mmm les pain in the ass to say a word well thoose where 5 words really....but that does not mean in any way that carbs are bad.
Up until a few years motorcycles where still using carburators. And consistently beating the crap of any car they find in theyre path....with just carburators.
Just like tunning a Rotary Engine, Carburators is a bit of and Art. Doing it right and the reward will be priceless.
This is and art that should not be forgotten. The playstation, Youtube & press a buton to set up generations needs to learn & maintain this art.

26

AlexanderLarsen Pretty easy to do, if your car has OBD2, grab a module off eBay (WiFi or Bluetooth) and sync it to your Android/iOS with an app like Torque. You can then display ECU parameters in real time.

27

EliThanos i agree 100% good sir, carbs are awesome, you cant get that raw soundtrack from any kind of injection.
It needs a good professional tuner to really shine though.

28

earmenau maybe Tsukuba is a bit too narrow for such high powered cars to be fully utilized. or in other words, the difference in power means less in laptimes than you would expect.

29
