Hibino’s Formula Drift Japan GT-R

My next spotlight from the recent R’s Meeting takes us from a built-up drag R33 to another san-san, this one transformed into a drift machine.

This is Tetsuya Hibino’s Formula Drift Japan machine, which I can safely say looked like nothing else in the Fuji Speedway paddock on the day.

Built by Rush Motor Sports in Gifu Prefecture, it’s the first pro-spec drift car I’ve ever seen based on a BCNR33 chassis. The exterior mixes a stock look with factory front and rear bumpers and massively widened front fenders to accommodate a huge amount of steering angle.

The R33 sits on Mikado Hayabusa wheels, which look very different to any design we’ve ever seen come out of Japan in the past.

A lot of fabrication work has gone into the front structure, starting off with cut-out inner fenders. The front bumper and various ancillaries are then fixed onto a custom tubular frame, including the repositioned intercooler which sits higher up into the grille section so that the piping could be kept shorter and straighter to aid throttle response.

The RB26 is built for function so there aren’t any shiny and pretty bits spicing up its looks. BorgWarner EFR turbos are becoming more and more popular in Japan thanks to the better response, boost pick-up and flow characteristics compared to the same old blowers everyone is used to.

As you can see above, when Hibino battled against Yokoi a few weeks back at the Suzuka Twin round of FD Japan, the motor responds very quickly with tons of power. Bye-bye tyres!

With the intercooler given priority up front, the radiator had to be repositioned in the rear with a couple of fans added. Too bad the car had been stripped of the massive rear wing it usually runs, which you can see in the video above.

A pair of riveted-on fenders were fitted over the stock guards to add extra girth at the rear.

Japanese rollcage fabrication is really catching up to overseas standards now, this particular car boasting a serious custom job gusseted along the A and B pillars as well as the roof.

It’s probably one of the freshest drift car builds I’ve seen in Japan in the last couple of years. And finally something not powered by a 2JZ!

Oh Man this is Awesome, Shame its a Drift car but still an Amazing build. I want to see more Big power, serious track cars rather. I love the R Chassis, and this is pure function > form.

JackJack_IOT "shame its a drift car" well a majority of r33's are drift cars but also street/track cars. They could always tune the car to be a track car if they wanted. I know a few people personaly who have started a 240 as a drift build, and switched between track and build

JackJack_IOT Whats the shame for? The fun? The look? The drive? Where have you been? SH features high power track oriented cars on the daily my friend. Just stay tuned, it would be a shame to miss what's coming up I bet.

Always been a big fan of R33's and hope to get one in a few years. Also good to know that Japan is also on the EFR bandwagon as the 8374 is all the rage for FD's here in the US.

The 33's really grown on my of late, but I can't believe this one is the first pro-spec drift car of its type. I know it's a big car by Skyline standards, but guys use JZX's all the time for the sideways work.

That wing is wild! Good to see a pretty serious R33 build, they're in my "least of" groupings of the Skylines (I mean still, how negative is that, really), but it's still got a pretty warm place in my heart and I'm craving more.
That red stripe on the wheel is killing me though, looks great.

Hibino is the man, Met him at YZ circuit 2 years ago, was carving up in a S14! Shame he stopped beating on AEs!!!

I love R33s. I gotta admit I am surprised as well that this is the 1st pro built R33 GTR...I mean REALLY?!? That's surprising. 

Also; looks much better without the wing!

greenroadster rear mounted radiators with fans which push air in rather than pull. Not as efficient but it's a compromise.

This is a fad that drift has made popular, you won't see this on that many real race cars. Basically all it's doing is adding weight for looks. A real race cage will be on average only 1/2" away from the chassis and therefore have no need for huge gussets. 

So from an engineering standpoint this application sort of conflicts with the stripped down engine, which does look real race.

I see your point, but is my understanding Gussets are required at tube junctions of hoops and shoulder rail and places where you can't weld. Chances are that the removal of parts, striping and cutting on the car has made the chassis lighter but also weaker and more prone to twist and bending considering that drifting put the cars over some serious stress forces when they are sideways. So they probably added the gussets first for safety and for adding strength and rigidity back to the chassis. It will be interesting to see what the rule book says im pretty sure there's already a rule in place regarding roll cages and what is the minimum required. There's a lot of racing series that have made the gussets mandatory and they have specific rules for use them.
In my opinion gussets looks cool.

EliThanos No race series I know requires this type of gusset. And all the ones I know require 100% weld around the perimeter of each tube at the junction. There's tricks to building to keep weld access. This car doesn't have any rigid structure taken out. In fact it still has the inner door sheet metal, so it's far from a real race car. Gussets add rigidity at the tubing joints, in between joints they may be adding crash strength but any rigidity is minimal and not worth the weight penalty. 

Yes they do look cool, that's their only fulfilled purpose.

@Whoshot CharlesChris15 I'm a regular but every "interesting" (atleast in my opinion) car I see recently is somehow orientated towards drifting, yeah its fun to do and I my self enjoy it, but back when I first followed SH (when it launched side by side with NFS ProStreet) it was time attack track orientated or high-speed cars, these days it just appears to be Drift cars. IMO This is a shame because its a GTR, a 4WD car that has the capability of high speed circuit passes yet its being used for drifting (and possibly converted to RWD) , if you want a drift car why not just buy a RWD Skyline like a GTS-T and just drop a RB26 in it although the RB25 a capable motor just as the RB20 is or SR20.
Just my 2 Cents.
