Look Closer… Do You See It?

Well, do you?

As I walked past this red Nissan Silvia S15 while heading towards the inner paddock at Nikko Circuit during N-Style’s Black Mark Day, I caught something out of the corner of my eye.

RB26-S15-BMD-05

Without even thinking about it I doubled back to have a closer look. Wait a second!

RB26-S15-BMD-01

The surprise was more due to the fact that you don’t really see RB26 swaps into S-chassis cars in Japan anymore. I used to come across them quite often back in the day, but with the way SR20 tuning has been pushed of late, not to mention the way turbo technology has evolved in the last few years, you’re able to make serious power without needing to add quite so much weight to the front of the car.

RB26-S15-BMD-02

But then again, it certainly doesn’t look as cool as this, right?!

RB26-S15-BMD-06

Judging by the ferocity of this car out on track, the high-mounted KKK turbochargers are pushing decent amounts of boost, and the driver certainly knew how to use all the power they generate.

RB26-S15-BMD-11

In no way did the car look front-heavy – the front wheels bit down hard with some good grip, and the driver was able to switch from left to right corners very smoothly.

RB26-S15-BMD-08

The car was sitting on a set of Work VS-XX wheels with the rears pretty much changing at each outing. Go turbo and you eat through rubber!

RB26-S15-BMD-12

The stock fenders have been cut and covered with flares to allow a more aggressive offset to be run on the rear wheels.

RB26-S15-BMD-04

My favourite detail was the drag-type spoiler at the rear – an addition that gives a totally unique look to such a popular chassis.

RB26-S15-BMD-09

Now here’s an interior totally geared towards drifting. Each of the three center ventilation outlets have been sacrificed to hold gauges, and the handbrake has been modified with what looks like a lever extension.

RB26-S15-BMD-10

And then you have this, an Ikeya Formula sequential shifter – something I hadn’t seen in a very long time. It’s effectively a box of magic that turns every backwards pull of the lever into a corresponding H-pattern shift, and an upward click into a downshift. It’s a cheaper alternative to a sequential gearbox, but the drop in shift speeds is certainly there.

A nice final touch to what was the most unique S15 at Black Mark Day.

Are those Porsche wheels in the back? If so three thumbs up.

2

I always wondered if there was something to change a normal manual into a sequential and S15s have aged so well.

3

BannedAndFurious How in the world did you see that?

8

BannedAndFurious 944 wheels it looks like. Odd considering it's a different bolt pattern. 5x130 compared to 5x114.

it makes me wonder how good an rb swap works on a grip focused s15!  Any expieriences here?

Looked at the cover image for 10 seconds after I read the title then just muttered to myself 'rb26'. The RB lump seems to suit the S15 so well

16

I like the Ikeya thing. 10/10 would try it out.

17

speedhunters_dino BannedAndFurious That was the thing that bothered me. I thought that it was just a work of a Japanese mad man. Maybe whole 928 rear end swap. There is not much reason in some of those grassroots builds. Although on the second thought such swap would more of Scandinavian type of crazy.

18

BannedAndFurious they are autostrada monza made by work wheels

19

speedhunters_dino i believe those front wheels are not work vs-xx since the face is not front mounted and the center area is little bit different.

20

and it still has a soundsystem...awesome

Just spent an hour trying to understand how the Ikeya thing works. Still do not get it.

23

Maybe someone can shed some light on a question I have. Is there any particular reason why we've seen more 2JZ setups than RB setups? I understand 2J's have more displacement but, are they more common? I completely get why we'd see them more over here in the US, but, even in Japan (Masashi Yokoi I believe uses a 2JZ in his S15 in Japan) I feel like I've seen more 2JZ setups.

24

First thing I notice was the RB26 sitting in there, nice setup here.

25

H8RADE I think the general consensus is that you can make slightly more reliable power out of a 2JZ for slightly less expense - i have absolutely no experience or first hand knowledge of this, just repeating junk I heard ;)

shiftyXTI H8RADE Thanks for that. I was thinking cost might've been an issue... But, then I thought, 'why would cost be an issue if there's an abundance of Skylines in Japan?' In the US, yes, I get it but even in other countries, let along Japan.... Just trying to understand is all

29

BannedAndFurious  And there was me thinking that they were Lambo Diablo rims lol

30

I wanted to confirm what my eyes were telling me before I proceeded with the rest of the article. Cool swap! I bet it makes a nice noise as it's bouncing off any rev limiters n destroying tires.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to make an r34 rwd our how much more weight do you save by using a rb engine in a s chassis car??? Or maybe the guy Just wanta something different??? Just wondering. Great find! I love swaps

31

H8RADE The 2jzgte also comes in many different vehicles. So it is not nearly as hard to source a good transplant.

33

2jz can make 800hp on stick internals, simply get a bigger fuel pump, injectors, turbo and tune and you already there. Rb stick internals will handle only 500, some say 600 but that really pushing it. Also Rb has oil starvation issues at higher power that have to be addressed as well as the rb26 being a more expensive engine to modify and maintain long term.

35

Rb26 and box is about 90kg heavier than sr20 and box. I don't think it would be cheaper as r34 gtr more than double the price.. Plus you would really infuriate people getting a genuine gtr and converting to rwd. S15 at least people think it's cool.

36

Drift it's great, more power and torque and a bit more reliability. Grip focused as in time attack? It's not worth the weight penalty and throwing out the balance for a bit more power, not a good idea. Rb is a longer engine and nearly 90kg heavier than sr!

37

It's not quite a sequential more like a straight cut manual. As far as I know you still have two shift using the clutch.

38
Chris 'Haffy' Hafner

Probably easier and cheaper using a GT-T, at least you start RWD.

Personally an LS swap is probably better in a track focused car than the SR, more power less weight and uber cheap mods. My 2 cents but I'm all for SR if it means keeping it Nissan.

Derelict I've always wondered this too. Maybe I should try get in touch and they can explain it to us via Speedhunters...

43

Gary89 takahashitothetop H8RADE shiftyXTI Agree with all of this. In New Zealand five or six years ago, it was far more common to see an RB26 swap and less common to see 2JZ, now those two have definitely swapped around. I think it comes down to the popularity of the 2JZ world wide, it's good reputation for easy reliable power and definitely its easy availability when compared to the RB.

67

I love the rear tail lights, and the paintwork is really sweet for a drift car. Also, are those alfa romeo or porsche wheels on the rear?

68

Running e85 there numerous that do it. It's nothing a would recommend for drifting or a hard core track sesh but a good tune and turning up the boost for a little squirt or few laps they seem to last a fair while. 600hp 2j handle all day, 800hp is fine for small doses.

81

Derelict Peter_Kelly speedhunters_dino it's simple to explain: you move the shift lever, the other end hits the gearbox goblin on the head, he gets angry and jumps left and right, up and down, spreads his magic goblin dust....  HEY PRESTO: you have changed gear!!!! :P

aside from displacement and availabilty, RB's have more "serious" issues sooner when pushed. crank/keyway/oiling issues.
