This weekend the NASCAR Sprint Cup series is in Watkins Glen, New York for the second of its two annual road course stops. As an example of just how exciting it can be when NASCAR takes to a non-oval track, check out this footage from the end of last year’s NYC race. During the final lap you’ll see Kyle Busch spin-out from the lead and an old fashioned dogfight between 2012 champ Brad Keselowski and ex-Aussie V8 Supercar driver Marcos Ambrose break out. It turns out the track had a thin coating of oil from a previous blown motor, resulting in plenty of sideways driving and making the run to the checkered flag that much more hairy.
I know I’ll be tuning in on Sunday to see what goes down this year.
I live about 5 minutes from WGI and this is the one event I avoid like the plaque. Not so much because of NASCAR but more of it's typical fanbase. If I were to go to a NASCAR race, it would be the Glen, but it's just not for me. I'll stick to the summer full of SCCA races and Grand Am weekend. Oh and the Vintage Festival is just a couple weeks away!
As someone said on Youtube about this video : NASCAR should bring out the oil car at the end of every race !!
They should combine all US GRC events with Nascar weekends like at Loudon, NH. Worlds collide! Thanks for being diverse in your posts Mike!!
Reminded me of this Aussie V8 SC final lap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94_9qO19z-0
NASCAR needs more road racing. I really hope Austin gets added to the schedule. If you want an example of a great race and finish when they're only turning left, check out the 2010 Daytona 500 finish. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdutNq7jE2U
As a New Zealander I've never been into NASCAR; but that was awesome. Why aren't they all on road courses instead of boring ovals? I follow the F1 and that finish was more exciting than almost anything we've had in about the last 3 seasons of F1. If it was always like that I would definitely be converted.
Oh yea!!! Finally some more NASCAR love from speedhunters! I love it when y'all feature this stuff. With a track in Nearly every state or within relativly close proximity to the majority of the US population, there is no excuse to not go to at least one race. Even if you think it's a bunch of rednecks and hillbillies just watching cars go round and round...well it beats NOT going to the race. BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY
Yep, outside of a couple of the interesting ovals the road courses are the only ones I watch. I hope they add more to the list. Austin would be nice to see.
If you want to see Nascar cars take on bends check out the european series saw them round Brans Hatch last may and the scream of the V8's are on par with DTM racers
@ack154 I feel u dawgg. Living that close during NASCAR weekend must be an insanely obnoxoius an treacherous endeavor trying to get anywhere . However I posit the racing action is the best entertainment value of most anything you'll see on a road course, they sound great, and the atmosphere is electric.
We had some drunk jerks try to hop on our golf carts all around that bigass track the whole weekend. ..and there was nudity at the end lol so yeah not for everyone.
CAN NOT WAIT for the Vintage Fest I hear Mini will be the featured marque. You live in one of the most beautiful places in America but I'm sure you already knew that.
@RenoRotary wow, where to begin. Try driving a 3600lb car on 9" wide tires with 30% compound left and 900hp with a torque curve that would pucker even the tightest of... Well you get the point. Now do that while another racers engine blew and spilled oil all over the racing line and you must change your line while someone is gunning for your rear bumper. And hey you can watch all of this for $30 and bring in endless amounts of beer and even listen to what the drivers are saying. You mu friend are a bad friend of motorsports. Give respect even if you have none.
@sean klingelhoefer Just saw a story the other day about the possibility of adding "The Boot" section to the race future. That would be pretty fun to watch.
@sean klingelhoefer Pff compared to that even shorter giant kitty litter bin with one special feature? Really? I've driven through both...Sonoma and that area is nice but it will never have the crowds of the Glen, the action oooor even the scenery. Sonoma can keep its Coppola...we have a giant, skanky ass fuck'n cat mascot at a country concert for OUR wine sponsor (Red Cat aka hector horny juice by Hazlit). Big ups to West Coast Brewery & Bear republic but it still ain't Ithaca Beer. Boom.
@Durattack A good 5 hours away. Betwixt wine & beer...& liquor country, great driving roads and more waterfalls per sq mile than any other US city.
@HeelToe I interned at WGI under the marketing department the first time Marcos came. I loaded up on classic footage of him before hand first so it was cool, got to wish him goodluck on the way out to the paddock...he gave me that dimpled grin and said "thanks man." That year he punk'd Kyle Busch for the lead in 'the bus stop' and it was great because Kyle Busch was kind of a debbie downer about signatures. Lots of stuff sounds great around that track but a chorus of nascar V8's fighting for grip is spesh'l. The universe that is NASCAR is truly something to behold in awe. Plus everyone is hammered. +'s & -'s...
@HeelToe Well obviously not all the races finish with that much excitement, but it would be awesome to see another road course or two added to the schedule.
@HeelToe i wish nascar did more road courses. I think it would be awesome, much more like v8 superars
@EricSeanDelaney I'll be out there as well with a bunch of buddies, should be a blast.
@Mike Garrett @sean The Boot would be a great addition. When NASCAR first started racing at The Glen I was fortunate enough to live in the Northeast and attended the first five years. Back then the teams had not developed chassis specific to road courses and everyone was running an LTO on the road course, plus no one really understood setups. It was great racing, and such a world apart from IMSA GTO, GTU and GTP not to mention Can-Am and Formula 1 from the past.
@Mike Garrett So none of you guys are coming out?! That's a bummer.
