The Winter Olympics venue of Tignes in the French Alps is well known for its amazing skiing and freestyle off-piste. Going downhill is one thing. How about going uphill. And then doing a backflip.

In a Mini?

Former extreme ski world champion Guerlain Chicherit was fresh from competing in this year’s Dakar Rally (where he’d finished an impressive eighth overall in his SMG Buggy) when he was strapped into the Mini Countryman to take on this challenge. Four years of preparation had gone into the attempt, and no doubt a lot of computer modelling – and finger crossing.

Back To The Future crossed with Live And Let Die: Guerlain had to maintain exactly 60kph and be full on the throttle on the ramp to achieve the correct velocity. He made two attempts: one in private to prove it worked – and he was still  in one piece – and then a second in front of the crowd at the ski resort that evening.

In the air, in slow motion, it all looks graceful and in control. It’s the reality of how the four wheels are going to reconnect with the snow that’s the worry.

Make sure you’ve had your breakfast before watching this one…

we must move forward, not backward;
upward, not forward;
and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

Wow, I'm surprised the car was able to make the flip. Very cool video.

i did not expect that! Wow, backfliping mini's. I wonder how they came up with that idea because a sober mind wouldn't have thought of that. Beer was a flowing that night when they decided to do that. How do you top that! Its so out there that even if he was to brag about it no one would believe him. Good that people are thinking outside the box.

this is so fucking funny... "backflip in a Mini"... Big Mini Logo... Big JCW logo... and the fan boys swallow it, marketing is very happy...
what the fuck? This has NOTHING to do with a MINI. I assume, this is the chassis for rally raid "mini". If yes, not even the tubular frame chassis is done by mini. It's done by another small company in Germany and is nearly the same frame they've used for the BMW Xx rally raid cars.
“Four years of preparation”  -> also for the fan boys. Development of a complete rally raid car doesn’t took 4 years. One of the biggest tasks during development for the Chassis team is the MBS simulation to tune kinematics and find a setup for spring and dampening rates, so that the car will not jump around like a frog on LSD after landing in all load situations. They already had the model, the data, the idea. A skilled team of engineers will maybe need 4 weeks for it.
Sorry for hating, it is a very cool and unique attempt.
But I hate today’s ways of advertisement.

Welp, if that's a Mini, then I am Jamie Foxx. But! That was pretty damn cool.

@r0taryh3ad Wow, I  would be willing to bet that without the sponsorships and advertising that this would have remained a pipe dream. Love it for what it is.

you are right, for sure.
BUT, there are many people out there thinking "woooow, look, such a great car the countryman is" (I exactly heard this words from a co-worker)
I just wanted to make clear that this car has nothing to do with a countryman and it would also have been possible with a 2CV exterior ;)
Also, from an engineering point of view, its no big "voodoo" going on here or real out of the box thinking... as Glubags already posted -> MATH

@r0taryh3ad What is it that people like you try to prove with your hater-comments? So you really think you are smarter than everyone else by having to explain the obvious? There might be some non-car people out there not getting it... so what? Why can't you just take it as what it is and enjoy that there are people out there actually doing this shit instead of trying to be keyboard heroes... how can one be such a negative and / or frustrated person. It must be a tough life... i guess ;)
