The Only Way Is Down: Slammed Society Hits Fuji

Following on from the success that the last two Hellaflush shows have had in Japan, the Fatlace crew was back in Fuji Speedway yesterday for the first ever Slammed Society event in the land of the rising sun. With 400 cars present, representing every extreme of Japanese car culture there was plenty of awesome cars to check out, including Kei Miura’s Scion FR-S wearing the unmistakable Rocket Bunny widebody aero. The car, on display at the Enkei wheels stand had ditched its oldschool BBS mesh wheels in favor of a set of RS05RRs for a totally different look. But more on this car later next week.

Just like fashion, car culture comes in a never ending variety of styles, and movements like Hellaflush and Slammed Society strives to support them all, something that was very obvious at FSW yesterday. Aside from the Tokyo Auto Salon there is no other place that you can see the RWB tribe…

…mixing it up with all sorts of cars, even wild VIP rides like this JZS 175 Crown Royal Saloon exhibiting the sort of extreme negative camber that puts the oni (devil) into kyan (camber)!

Kato-san from Liberty Walk decided to take a more oldschool approach when selecting his show car for Slammed Society and I’m sure I am not the only one that was glad to see him rock up with his bozo Skyline C210.

Along with regulars to these gatherings, like what may well be the most well known Subaru Legacy in Japan…

…there was expanses of never-before-seen cars to feast your eyes on.

Variety is the name of the game at these Fatlace organized events.

Vintage Fairlady and Skyline specialist Star Road brought one of their S30 demo cars, which upon seeing it made me realize that I really need to drop by their shop to see them and all the other awesome cars they have.

It was quite impressive to see just how far some had traveled for a chance to display their cars for the day, like this S15 from Hiroshima-based shop Review which had driven the close to 1000 km up with a bunch of other cars.

While the USDM movement continues to grow…

…you are really never more than a few footsteps away from some impossibly Japanese rides like this old Soarer.

Well known shops like N-Style from Gunma…

…flocked in big numbers bringing a nice selection of customer cars, from powerful street/drift cars…

…to more style-oriented cuisers.

Aside from the cars and vendor stalls the music was kept pumping throughout the day and there was even an B-Boy dace off to check out.

Respected custom paint and body shop Looking came up from Osaka with a bunch of cars, including their candy red FD3S which won Best of Show at the Hellaflush Kansai event back in May.

Nakai-san was followed to the venue by a few of his customers, cars that included the orange 993 Rough Unity, which funnily enough I saw parked up in Roppongi the night before.

This S14 from Osaka has been doing the rounds at all the big car shows this year and it keeps evolving with more crazy detailing. Keep an eye out for this one in the spotlight-o-rama from the event!

The “clean is best” approach is one that always works best as this MKII Golf on Enkei 92s perfectly exhibits. I even spotted another car wearing a set of these wheels in 20-inch size, but more on that on following posts.

With Halloween just around the corner this pumpkin-orange Honda Stream is the perfect ride to wrap up this quick preview from the Slammed Society show in Fuji. I’ve got a lot more to show you, finishing up with a full feature and video of the car you have all been waiting to see. Stay tuned…

I don't know why but I'm obsessed with that S14. So imaginative, reminds me of something out of an Anime.

"you are really never more than a few footsteps away from some impossibly Japanese rides like this old Soarer" This sentence made me laugh so hard. That car is exactly impossibly japanese. I love the wording.

Is that a Nazi Germany symbol on the left rear of the army- themed S14? Cuz it sure looks like it. Its the Parteiadler, or coat of arms of the Nazi Party. Not exactly sure why that's there, free speech and all, but there will be some offended people seeing that. I hope it's a case of ignorance and a mistake, not a statement.

Have Hellaflush events become so boring that b-boy battles are the mainstay now? It's not about the cars anymore, it's a lifestyle event.

@FunctionFirst He's actually using the Buddhist swastika which has been used for nearly 3000 years. Its usually used to represent the Buddha's heart on Buddhist statues. It is the reverse of the Nazi swastika.

47

@GraysonParker  @FunctionFirst Sorry about that. I have removed the photo of the car.

48

Go to Star Road? You are about to earn a second hug. But you should, the people on this site would absolutely loose their you-know-what over the s30s and KPGCs that they build/demo. Im actually a little surprised it has taken this long. Great coverage as always.

49

Oh that wagon is awesome. Gotta love the japanese

50

@RodChong  @GraysonParker  @FunctionFirst It's a themed german ww2 s14, it's art, artistic censorship sucks, the nazis did that. Not drawing comparisons, just ironies.

51

I find it "amusing" (and i use this term very loosely) that SH likes to portray itself pro-Japanese and have all these Katakana characters shown in the title, yet when it comes down to some Japanese history......it fails, miserably.
http://www.japanese-buddhism.com/swastika.html
The S14 removed from the post had nothing to do with the German Nazi folks.
You know? JDM goes BEYOND just cars right? JDM is Japanese' everything, and that includes Buddhism, religion and history and many other Japanese related stuff, not just cars.
Ever been to a "Japanese" restaurant where the owner is not Japanese and his servers welcome you into the restaurant with "irashaimase? You suddenly feel in Japan, then quickly realize that none of the people working there are Japanese, nor they care about the Japanese culture, and are there just to collect their paycheck.
You speak Japanese to them and they tell you that they don't speak Japanese. So you ask yourself: "why did they greet me with irashaimase if they don't speak Japanese?"
Often times this is how I feel when I check out SH.

52

@FunctionFirst Yeah, it's a case of ignorance:
http://www.japanese-buddhism.com/swastika.html

53

@JDMized  @FunctionFirst
 It never needed to be removed from the site Rod, as an enthusiast I can't say that I approve of someone using a symbol like that on purpose, but it's a themed car - I get that, most importantly, it's not my car and I have no standing to say what someone should say or do to their car. I'm also not a fan of censorship, but I don't honestly believe someone would do that purposely, especially not in Japan. I'm ok with symbolism, negative or positive, I'd say leave it alone until, or if someone is offended by it, then out of respect sure, remove it. I probably should have said nothing, but I was just hoping maybe someone would elaborate a bit more and maybe strike up a mature convo. Either way, I'm not nearly as critical, hateful and angry as JDMized is at everything this site does.

54

@DanielFenton  @RodChong  @FunctionFirst Oh well. It's a nice car, none the less

55

@JDMized No. JDM means Japanese Domestic Market and is a term specifically used within the automotive market. It has nothing to do with anything outside of automotive like Buddhism, religion etc... your rant = FAIL

56

@JDMized except for the fact that it had a coat of arms directly linked to the nazis on it and it had references to nazi weaponry.

59

@JDMized
Hi Alex. Back with more complaining and negativity I see.
I think your complaints today are unfair. We are well aware of the use of this symbol in the east: Indian, Chinese etc. However in this instance we thought it best to remove the photo.

60

JDM stands for ALL Japanese stuff related, not just cars.
If it were like you said, it would be JCM (Japanese Car Market). Unforntuately that's not the case.

61

Like I said, I'm sure you've been in one of those "Japanese" restaurant. I feel the same way.
"We are well aware of this symbol in the east (...)"....you broght negativity to yourself.
The illiterate kids that complained about the symbol in the first place should have looked into it.

62

@JDMized A domestic Market has nothing to do with a religion

63

@JDMized Hey, since you are having trouble understanding the symbol was not just a Swastika, it was the reversed Nazi version, also, it was accompanied by several Nazi coat of arms as well as references/symbols to ww2 German weapons. So nice try.

64

@JDMized Hey, since you are having trouble understanding the symbol was not just a Swastika, it was the reversed Nazi version, also, it was accompanied by several Nazi coat of arms as well as references/symbols to ww2 German weapons. So nice try.

And why do you continue to troll this website? A simple reading through your own post history reveals a string of negative commentary. If you hate it so much.. stop plugging it into the web browser.

65

@JDMized Go back to school kid.

66

@JDMized What makes this even funnier is that your handle is JDMized. You don't even understand your name lol

67

i think i just fell in love with that Legacy

68

@majik16106  @JDMized I am also well-aware of the several-thousand year history of what is known to the west as the Swastika. Nowhere in my original post did I once mention that word when I brought up this issue in the first place. I mentioned the Nazi party coat of arms, which was aped very well on the back of the car. Never once did I complain about it either. Maybe you should look in the mirror before slinging the word ignorance around, Kid.

69

that's a nice compromise for the s14

70

Great post Dino, always enjoy reading your event coverage! Only complaint is that I can't be there myself to view any of these amazing cars in real life! Thanks!!

71

@w @JDMized Your reply = FAIL.

72

Wow, even the great Speedhunters couldn't stand in the way of political-correctness.

73

@JDMized You're completely right as far as people's lack of knowledge of Japanese(or many cultural groups for that matter) culture, religion, and history. I like to compare it to all the people who get tattoos of Chinese characters, Sanskrit, Arabic, etc who don't actually know what they mean or their cultural significance and just get them to look cool and appear multicultural. Only thing I gotta point out is that JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market which refers to products/services made/sold/offered in Japan, though it is generally used when referring to cars. It has nothing to do with culture or anything else.

74

@pleaseSMILEcz Yep that's the one. I think it's brilliant. So different and so dedicated to the theme.

76

@pleaseSMILEcz Yep that's the one. I think it's brilliant. So different and so dedicated to the theme.

77

@JDMized I can assure you that this car is most definitely referencing a Nazi theme, as other have mentioned if you know much about WW2 then you can quickly identify many Nazi related items that have not been removed from the car. Furthermore the direction of the swastika that the Nazis use is reversed from the original form leaving no doubt that this was indeed a Nazi symbol.

Furthermore I'm sure that Dino knows the meaning of a traditional Swastika as you see literally hundreds of them on your navigation unit driving around Japan indicating the location of temples.

That said I don't personally see the big deal about a swastika on the car. When I was a child I built all sorts of army models, American, Russian, Japanese and yes, Nazi German stuff too. Does this mean I'm a bad person? I don't think so, and I don't think there's anything wrong with this guy building a car in that theme. Obviously the Nazis did some horrible things and I don't condone the holocaust nor do I think it's "cool".

But I do think that some of the designs the Nazis came up with for their logos were interesting from a design standpoint and I also find the idea of the Nazi army quite scary. I think that's what the owner was going for here, something terrifying on wheels and I think that's exactly what he's done. I doubt highly that this was built by some kind of neo-Nazi white supremacist living in Japan, so personally it doesn't offend me. Now if it had racist jargon and slogans on the side that would be something different, but I for one don't see any harm in a military themed vehicle.

Moreover when it comes to symbols and their meanings you'll see the older communist Japanese "rising sun" flag on this site quite often, which is quite controversial for some, particularly the Japanese - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Japan . The same could likely be said for the confederate flag of America, but I doubt highly that one would feel the need to remove the roof of the General Lee.

Just some food for thought...

@JDMized Alex you bring up an interesting point though. You could compare how "JDM" automotive culture gets remade around the world by enthusiasts to the spread of "sushi" around the world too. Of course once you are outside of Japan the participants are not necessary Japanese people themselves. These elements get reinterpreted in different ways, some times it tries to stay true to the roots, other times it doesn't and gets "westernized". In some instances the food that people eat under the name "sushi" (and the related cultural experience) to be someone removed from the original.

It's not to say that everyone is entitled to eat Sushi LOL!

I live in Sweden and Sushi is very popular here and for the most part it's made to a pretty good standard (the fish is high quality and the pieces are small). However it doesn't quite feel or taste the same as when you eat Sushi in Japan itself though!

Anyway blah blah blah....

speedhunters_dino

@Taryn Croucher Cool!

102

@apex_DNA  @Steffan I'm not sure if you know this, but there is a difference between, hellaflush and oni-kyan. While both styles might look wild to some they are two completely different things. Hellalflush was defined a long time ago as; "Flush when parked, tucked during drifting", and the keyword there is "Drifting". Hellaflush was meant to be functional while still looking aggressive.

Now over the years the word "Hellaflush" has been construed into some ridiculous form of super Hippari (super stretched) and Oni-Kyan (super cambered) looks. And we've even seen it interpreted into the Honda scene, and many other scenes. It's such a big movement, even REPLICA wheel manufacturers were making wheels specific to making a car have an aggressive wheel fitment.

This is where "Hellaflush" gets lost in translation. So while you might think its "rice", its origins came from something harmless, something that VW/Euro guys have been doing FOREVER; a way to make a seemingly regular street car, look aggressive by using wheel fitment. Hate on it all you want, but I just wanted to make sure you understood that there was an actual definition to Hellaflush and that other fitment styles, while similar, have different names.

103

@JDMized For christs' sakes man just shut up...you actually sound smarter that way. The thing I find "amusing" is that for your name to be JDMized, you know absolutely nothing about it.

104

@JDMized Leave it to you to screw up a good post with your ignorance, smh.

105

@TASTYDRAGON69 @Steffan The origins of rice as we know it were just as harmless, believe me.

106

@apex_DNA  @TASTYDRAGON69  @Steffan educated response! please elaborate!

109

@JDMized wow i want to join in on the replys as well!!! :p
isnt there a was to just ban this wolly?! all he seems to do is to create an argument in pretty much every comment that he makes!

110

Hey dino, obviously you guys editted the s14 to eliminate the very tiny swastika. was that decision related to corporate policy or just the concept of good taste. the rise of the nazi party is arguably one of the worst events in modern history, but, being that japan DID side with the nazi party, and being that car is in japan, it seems possible that the imagery was used by the owner as part of a theme, and not to perpetuate hate.   especially given the size of the detail (looks like it was smaller than three inches)Speedhunters features american owned cars that are themed to resemble the allied forces, yet no one assumes the owners support dropping atomic bombs on the civilian population of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

111

and like others have pointed out, the swastika is not facing the same direction as the nazi swastika, which implies the owner is against what the nazis stood for.

112

when I look at the original s14, the arms of the swastika point counter clockwise,. while the nazi swastika points clockwise.

so, either the owner accidentally faced it the wrong way (seems unlikely), or intentionally choose a non-offensive swastika because it allowed the owner to fulfill the theme while also showing disapproval of the nazi party.

113

@sean klingelhoefer  @JDMized Agreed. It should also be noted that Japan generally is not as sensitive to these sorts of images as in Europe or the United States. There have been many instances of Nazi regalia popping up in Japanese popular culture (music, anime, etc) and I think in all those cases it was more of a style/fashion thing rather than any sort of ideological statement.

114

Hey Dino, could I play off your good nature get a high res of the x7 wagon?! As always, keep up the good work and stay inspired! It shows in every article!

115

@Nikhil_P @JDMized Look, somebody is thinking on their own...aaahhh!!! Really?! You sound like a typical mangina that's afraid of reasoning with other men.

116

@KietaPhillips No, leave it to him to enlighten the stupid.

117

So that Honda Stream is the JDM version of the USDM Honda Oddysey? Wow...hot mini-van. FR-S looks great as well.

118
