MATT FIELD VERSUS GOLIATH

MATT FIELD VERSUS GOLIATH

This past weekend was packed with great grassroots and core events like the California Hot Rod Reunion and Just Drift All Star Bash. Both events were just a few miles away from each other, so Mike Garret and I decided to cover both. As the team tandem competition was running I caught up with Matt [...]

A 9-SECOND, 700HP, STREET-LEGAL DATSUN 510

A 9-SECOND, 700HP, STREET-LEGAL DATSUN 510

The term ‘street driven’ is one that’s often bandied around drag racing circles. While I have the utmost respect for any production-based machine that can cut a quick quarter (and we’re talking a sub 10-second ET here), there’s extra something special about a car that can do it straight off the road. In my mind [...]

A PAIR OF HOT AUDIS GET WET

A PAIR OF HOT AUDIS GET WET

I’ve long been of the opinion that if I was pushed in to buying one standard car to use for everything, that it would be an Audi. An RS4 Avant to be precise, a car that is good in all weathers, I can carry most anything I need, tow something with it, do a track day and sleep in it. These are just some of things that I need my cars to be able to do for me. That’s no small admission given what I do for a job either, but yes, I think an Audi would fit the bill. I’ve never owned one though, limit myself to just one car? Are you insane?

WHEN AWD JUST WON’T DO: BENSOPRA GT-R

WHEN AWD JUST WON’T DO: BENSOPRA GT-R

This white R35 GT-R is probably one of the most easily recognized Japanese demo cars of 2012, a car that over the years has been displayed at Tokyo Auto Salon through its, very ambitious, development process. This was supposed to become Ken Nomura’s next D1 Grand Prix drift machine, a beast capable of unleashing a [...]

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS – THE SHED

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS – THE SHED

Ireland is a strange country for automotive culture. It’s not exactly the most ideal country in the world to be a petrol head – high motor taxes, poor road network and extortionate insurance premiums all combined with a government determined to rid the roads of performance cars. Even to class yourself as an automotive enthusiast is frowned upon by the majority of society here. The general public want their appliances to transport them from A to B, more often than not neglecting everything along the way of their soulless commute.

But beneath the surface, a sub-culture exists. One that most here know nothing of. They hide in plain sight, often daily driving something that appears innocent enough to most, but attracts respect from those that can appreciate. They never go out to attract attention or to seek glory amongst their peers. They do what they do for one thing only – to put a smile on their own faces.

GRASSROOTS STYLE AT ALL STAR BASH

GRASSROOTS STYLE AT ALL STAR BASH

As I’m sure you guys are aware, the life of a Speedhunter is like that of a pinball. We spend our time bouncing back and forth between different automotive subcultures, never staying in one area for too long. A typical month for any one of us will include pointing our cameras at everything from rusty Hot Rods to jumping rally cars. Rarely though, do two events so different fall so close together.

You’ve already some of Larry and I’s exploits at the California Hot Rod Reunion, but that eardrum blasting insanity was just half of our Speedhunting adventures last weekend. On the opposite end of Kern County from Famoso , All Star Bash was also going down at Willow Springs. Larry will be contributing his own take on the event, but for my end I’d like to focus on one of the best parts of ASB – the cars.

THROUGH MY LENS: 1320 FEET AT A TIME

THROUGH MY LENS: 1320 FEET AT A TIME

Becoming a Speedhunter has really opened my eyes to all different types of car culture. It is so easy to be narrow minded about what cars or racing one likes or dislikes. I have realized that I am a fan of motoring in general. If it has four wheels, then I want to know about it. I want [...]

BTCC TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION

BTCC TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION

So what do you do when times are tough? When manufacturers are pulling out left, right and centre and the international rule makers seem to be adopting a head-in-the-sand policy, pushing ahead with rules changes that by their very nature can only increase costs? You do what’s right for your teams and drivers: you go [...]

JOY OF MACHINE: QUARTER MILE HUSTLERS

JOY OF MACHINE: QUARTER MILE HUSTLERS

Ever since I returned home from the California Hot Rod Reunion on Sunday evening, I’ve been experiencing strange sensations. As I crawled into bed on Sunday, tired and maybe smelling a bit like nitro, I closed my eyes my mind was filled with the sights and sounds of drag racing – screaming engines, burnouts, wheel stands, and parachutes. This is actually a pretty common thing for me, where if I spend an entire day doing something my mind continues replaying it until I fall asleep. A strange mix of exhaustion and excitement I guess? Of course given my line of work, 99% of these visions are related to cars in some way.

FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS: THE BTCC FINALE

FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS: THE BTCC FINALE

Sitting in the lines of traffic on the way to the finale of the 2012 British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch, it struck me that I hadn’t been to a BTCC for race for over two years – a shocking statistic for someone who used to regular attend at least two or three rounds [...]

#IAMTHESPEEDHUNTER: DRIFT MATSURI, QUEENSLAND

As each week passes, the popularity of the #IAMTHESPEEDHUNTER program grows steadily. I know some of you may have little interest in social media, but #IAMTHESPEEDHUNTER goes far beyond the social networks. Blake Williamson is about to provide you with a perfect case in point of this with his complete coverage of the recent Drift Matsuri which took place in Queensland, Australia not too long ago. If you feel up to the challenge of being the Speedhunter, all the details you need are at the bottom of this post. Blake, take it away … – PMcG.

JAPAN DOES CALIFORNIA: CAL FLAVOR 2012

JAPAN DOES CALIFORNIA: CAL FLAVOR 2012

Hello Speedhunters! This is Hiroaki “KAGE” Kageyama from The KAGE BLOG in Tokyo, Japan. I would like to share with you guys some coverage from an event which called CalFlavor which was held at Aichi’s Chubu International Airport on October 21st.

The concept of CalFlavor is to capture the feel of an American style car show in Japan. The cars at participating in this event include many Rods, Kustoms, and Lowriders as well as Minitrucks, USDM style cars, air-cooled VWs, and more. In total, there were over 500 cars that came out. Of that group I’d like to share a few highlights.

MEMORIES & MAYHEM AT FAMOSO

MEMORIES & MAYHEM AT FAMOSO

Of all the venues the Speedhunters team travels to in pursuit global car culture, Famoso Raceway in California may be the least notable. To be frank, this quarter mile dragstrip located amid farmland about 20 miles north of Bakersfield is a pretty boring place. There are no famous corners. There is no beautiful scenery. There are no plush pit facilities. It’s a dusty old place in the middle of no where, but I love it.
