CLASSIC F1S AT SNETTERTON

CLASSIC F1S AT SNETTERTON

Working with Speedhunters has been a life changing experience. I often wake up smiling, thinking how did I get so lucky to end up with my dream job straight out of college. It can however be an intimidating experience too. Sometimes the notion of writing a story that you’re not 100% confident in can be [...]

THE J22 EXPERIENCE

THE J22 EXPERIENCE

It’s the biggest and best sport compact drag racing meeting anywhere in the world, bar none. For 22 years Queensland’s annual ‘Jamboree’ has been one of the most anticipated events on Australia’s modified car calendar. The 2012 edition might just go down as one of the best yet. It’s been a long time since I [...]

A SELECTION OF SPEED FROM SNETTERTON

A SELECTION OF SPEED FROM SNETTERTON

It’s been a couple of years since I last visited Snetterton. Coincidentally, it was for the same event – the Time Attack Series finale which still ranks easily in my top five events that I’ve ever covered for the big SH. The memory of watching Gareth Lloyd taking the championship on the last lap of [...]

#FEATURETHIS: A SIDEWAYS SUBARU SVX

#FEATURETHIS: A SIDEWAYS SUBARU SVX

The Subaru SVX is without a doubt one of the most interesting Japanese cars of the 1990s. It may not have had the same racing credentials as its rivals, but with unique styling and a smooth flat six powerplant the SVX made for one hell of a unique GT car. It was ahead of its time to say the least.

As cool as the SVX was, it never offered a whole lot in the way of potential for modification. For starters, the Subaru six cylinder never had a ton of aftermarket support, and even worse the SVX was only offered with a four-speed automatic transmission.

MAZDA’S IN THE MOUNTAINS: ROADSTER & ROTARY MEET

MAZDA’S IN THE MOUNTAINS: ROADSTER & ROTARY MEET

As the long and seemingly unrelenting summer in Japan comes to an end, there is one event that for a few years now has marked the seasonal transition for me. I am of course talking of the Roadster & Rotary Meeting, held every September at the beautiful Sendai Hi-land Circuit, a celebration of all the [...]

WORLD TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP LANDS IN SONOMA

WORLD TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP LANDS IN SONOMA

After seven years the curb-jumping cars of the FIA World Touring Car Championship land on the shores of North America. Alain Menu took the very first pole position in Sonoma with a flying last lap in his Chevrolet Cruze. Second place went to Gabriele Tarquini in a SEAT and third went to points-leader Yvan Muller, also in a [...]

POLL: MCLAREN P1 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

POLL: MCLAREN P1 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

During this week’s #IAMTHESPEEDHUNTER Jonathan showed some early images of McLaren’s all new Supercar, the P1. We won’t know more until next week’s Paris Motor Show, but already the internet is filling with speculation and feedback about the new car. Naturally, expectations are high given the strong words McLaren has used to describe the new project.

For our weekly poll we thought we’d get some first impressions on the car from the Speedhunters community. Do you think the P1 looks too much like the 12C? Is it a worthy successor to the legendary McLaren F1?

Vote and discuss below!

SNAKES, STALLIONS AND SILVER ARROWS

SNAKES, STALLIONS AND SILVER ARROWS

The 2012 Goodwood Revival paid tribute to a number of iconic motor racing institutions during the 2012 running of the vintage festival, with each of the quartet being intrinsically linked with racing history. The phalanx of pre-war Silver Arrows single-seater behemoths flattened fans each time they took to the track; an unbelievable number of GTOs [...]

CRUNCH TIME AT THE FATLACE PADDOCK

CRUNCH TIME AT THE FATLACE PADDOCK

Last week before I headed to Antioch for the Billetproof show, I made a stop by the Fatlace Paddock in San Mateo to catch up with Mark Arcenal and company. Despite the fact that I only live a couple hours away, this was actually my first time to visit The Paddock.

I’d heard that the guys were working on some pretty cool projects for the upcoming SEMA Show, so I was excited to get a peek at those and to check out the shop itself.

THE FORMULA DRIFT JUDGES AND A VOICE RECORDER

THE FORMULA DRIFT JUDGES AND A VOICE RECORDER

Just like being the referee in soccer or ice hockey, being a professional drift judge is not easy. They always take the brunt of blame when a driver loses or scores low points in qualifying. Someone has to do it – and these three brave souls have stepped up to the plate. They are the [...]

THE KIWI BUILT QUATTRO S1

THE KIWI BUILT QUATTRO S1

The 1980s are remembered for a lot of things, but in the motorsport world those years represent the golden era of rallying. Group B took the World Rally Championship and turned it on its head. In matter of just a few short years factory-backed cars had doubled their power output and were packed full of cutting edge technology and exotic components. Many people likened them to Formula 1 cars for the gravel, and that wasn’t far from the truth. But they were too fast and ultimately too dangerous, which is why we will, unfortunately, never see anything like Group B in the WRC ever again. The spirit, however, will always live on.

THE 2JZ BMW 2002 SMOKEHUNTER

THE 2JZ BMW 2002 SMOKEHUNTER

One of this year’s highlights for me was getting the chance to cover Gatebil back in July. It may have been a few months ago, but it is quite hard to forget such an experience. It’s a weekend filled with craziness, bringing together similarly minded people from the far corners of Europe. Ultimately for me [...]

#FEATURETHIS: THE 愛車!

#FEATURETHIS: THE 愛車!

Japan’s love for the automobile is widely known, and I suppose it’s no surprise that the Japanese language has its own word that people use to refer to their own personal machines. That word is “愛車” – “aisha” – a literal combination of the words and kanji characters for “love” and “car”. A simple, yet beautiful word if I do say so myself.

With that, let’s get on with this week’s #FeatureThis selection of aisha submitted by the Japanese Speedhunters community.

GOODWOOD REVIVAL: THE GATEBIL OF RETRO

Attending the Goodwood Revival and Gatebil on consecutive weekends is quite a difficult thing to cope with. From a place which is all about pushing machinery to the limit, both on track and in terms of just what is possible with a car, to the ultimate celebration of everything retro within five days. Both events are [...]

#FEATURETHIS: ONE MAN’S MENTAL MICRA

#FEATURETHIS: ONE MAN’S MENTAL MICRA

Not long ago we received a message in the #FeatureThis inbox from Steve Thackwray who wanted to share his buddy’s K11 Nissan Micra with us. It’s not just any Micra mind you, but one of the craziest examples I’ve ever seen – not just in terms of its body work, but beneath the skin as well.
