Event>> Bhp Show 2011 Pt.ii

Back in part one we looked at the cool cars that were on display around the 2011 BHP show. But one of the major attractions to the show is the track. If a car is on display in the show there is a good chance you will see it taken trackside for a damn good thrashing.

Lydden Hill is one of my favorite UK tracks and not just because I have moved to the area and it's now my local. It's a one mile ribbon of undulating tarmac in the Kent countryside set in a natural bowl, a challenging track for a driver and an excellent spectator track with views of virtually the full circuit from any vantage point.

The first session out was a fairly quiet one with just a few cars venturing out. The 1JZ powered Datsun Z from my first installment and a track special Alfa Romeo 75.

Classic Z car with modern six cylinder turbo Japanese power… Perfect!

One of the many MKII Escorts driven very hard all day.

Fords old and new on the same piece of track.

The SVA Imports Time Attack Evo was not just on display, it was out on track at every opportunity.

Im not sure what the noise regs for the day were but the SVA Evo was properly loud as well as properly fast.

These hot rod Minis were just amazing …

… I wonder if Alec Issigonis ever imagined his creation would be matching the likes of 600BHP Skylines over 50 years after conception?

It's quite rare these days to see a PS13 not set up for drift. This PS was originally built for fast laps of the Nurburgring.

Your normal track day will attract various track orientated fast cars. The BHP show attracts such a wide variety of machinery it's just mind boggling. From CA18 powered MKII Escorts …

… to Cosworth powered MKIs …

… to an ex-BTCC Honda Civic.

Even a Dodge Nascar took to the track for a few demo laps. This was the first time I had ever heard a Nascar in the flesh and the noise on over-run, oh my … what a sound!

Amongst the public track action the BDC put on a selection of professional drift demos.

Joining the regular BDC drivers, UK drift legend Julian Smith brought out the Blitz ER34 to join in the fun.

Along with EDC driver Tim Marshal in the SVA 350z.

Watching the public track time with a few people getting a little sideways through the fast turn three was pretty impressive. But watching the demos, even for a hardened drift junkie like myself was an eye opener!

Team Falken's Paul Cheshire was getting to grips with his new 2JZ G35. I just love the heat haze from the screamer pipes poking through the bonnet.

Even though it was just a demo it didn't stop the drivers from putting on an awesome display of close quarter drifting.

The obligatory crowd pleaser, the tire killing, rolling burnout.

As the day drew to a close my personal favorite car of the show took to the track for the final sessions. I just love that Cosworth powered Capri!

The smoke from the chasing KP60 starlet was not from the rear tires, but from the the passenger side front tire, rubbing the arch under hard cornering.

MKII Escort Pinto powered estate. It's fantastic to see cars like this driven hard.

By far the fastest car on track all day was this hot-rod Fiesta. Far removed from the standard shopping special it is based on, it features rear wheel drive and a highly tuned Vauxhall XE. It just goes to show, no matter how fast a road going car is, nothing compares to a no holds bared racer.

The BHP Show is one of the few places you can see Time Attack, Drift, Nascar, Hot-rods and street cars all running on the same track at the same time. Awesome!

Ross.

Hey, an Alfa 75? Awesome! Im surprised you didn't say much about it, the 75 is one of the best handling cars ever built! You should do a spotlight on a 75 3ltr V6 or the Potenziata model, seriously awesome pieces of machinery. Great article!

Its not a G35 but a JDM skyline V35 look on wich side the steering wheel is!
