Car Spotlight>> M3 Csl Track Day Weapon

With my current fascination with BMW M3's, I couldn't help but notice this M3 CSL on my recent visit to Bedford Autodrome. The CSL is the ultimate incarnation of the E46 M3. Made in limited numbers as a last hoorah to the S54 straight six, the CSL is leaner, meaner and an altogether more focused M3. The CSL is subtly different to the standard model but this particular example just looked a little bit more aggressive. A chat with owner Keane Pudney relieved the car is actually very far from a stock M3 CSL …

First thing you notice is the standard 19" BBS hollow spoke magnesium wheels have been refinished in anthracite, then the details of the car drag you in. The car actually has Vorsteiner Carbon Bodywork. The boot, bonnet and bumper have all be replaced with lighter carbon items.

Adding nicely to the bare carbon roof.

The standard exhaust has been replaced with a Supersprint race item. A rear tower brace has been fitted to tie the rear turrets to the subframe, not only to providing more rigidity but to over come the subframe cracking issues suffered by the E46.

All the vent fins and kidneys have been replaced with carbon fibre. An unfortunate incident with a tow bar reveals the carbon of the Vorsteiner bumper beneath the paint.

Vorsteiner carbon bonnet with bare carbon vents.

It's the underpinnings of the car that have had the most attention payed. The brakes have been replaced with AP 6 pots on the front and 4 pots on the rear running Pagid RS29 pads. Intrax 1K2 coilovers keep everything under control while a Turner motorsport RTAB Limiting Kit stiffens up the rear without the bone-jarring ride of solid race bushes.

Under the bonnet things remains more or less the same. The CSL carbon airbox has been 'de-flapped' and the engine remapped to 370hp with the 155mph limiter deleted. The final drive has been reduced to 4.10 giving a theoretical top speed of 186mph but is effectively a torque multiplier giving 11-12% more torque across the range.

Really the car is the perfect mix of everyday driver practicality and a no holds barred trackday car. Keane regularly takes the car to its spiritual home the Nurburgring along with as many UK track days as possible while still using it as his daily transport. Though plans are in motion to retire the CSL from every day use with the addition of a full roll cage and more power.

beautifull girl

2

not sure if you could ever qualify a csl as practical though, no radio, no ac, no rear seats, it has more of nothing than any car pretty much

3

Gawd I want that airbox.... Too bad they are like 5k. The induction sound is to die for.

4

Seen this car at the Ring a couple of times. Great car, especially with the black wheels.

5

If I had the money for a CSL this would be the one... PERFECT... just perfect.

6

My dream car ;)

7

its funny you call it a weapon then come to say its the perfect daily driver. Honestly its a moderately tuned CSL, I dont see anything special about it.

8

I wouldn't be a huge fan of BMWs, but this car I like a lot. I think the fact that its been improved, moderately perhaps, all round, just serves to sharpen its focus. Nicely executed.

9

these sound amazing, only beemer i would own!

10

such a well balancwed car the CSL, lots of fun in a straight line on the roads not very practical as a

daily..

11

amazing machine...

12

amazing workout!

13

great car and a great approach to grass roots racing!!

14

My Fave BMW of all Time...

15

this is one of the coolest e46 i've ever seen

16

I drooled

17

This is cool. I want the Track Culture decal. Too bad the CSL was never brought to the states (I've never seen one, at least)

18

Ferds - It was fitted with a Radio / AC / Xenons at the factory as options. Admittedly the rear seats are only designed to seat two but it can carry two adults in the back in relative comfort.

Thanks for the writeup Ross.

1st paragraph....REVEALED? or RELIEVED? Please turn off the spellcheck and READ YOUR WORK BEFORE POSTING! Editors, this is getting out of hand...

20

everything is cherry, except those god awful 19 inch replaca wheels.

21

Don't get me wrong; this CSL is a beautiful car, but to

Call it "a track weapon" is a stretch.

Supersprint exhaust is not the greatest exhaust (nor will give you gobs of power), and those Intrax coilovers are mediocre at best. The BBS wheels are a nice touch, but they don't win races, nor does the nice-looking bodykit.

Again; I am not knocking at the car per se;

but this Bimmer is far from being a top contender.

22

just perfect, i dreming with this car! =)

23

Stunningly beautiful motor...sounds like hell has been unleashed! Love it!

24

This CSL reminds me of the CSL Loaded BMW has been revamping! Those cars are amazing!

25

Proper.

No stupid camber. No boat-anchor engine swaps, just a sorted track day car.

26

Even though it is 'theoretical', going from a 3.62 to a much shorter 4.10 final drive gearing will not get you anywhere close to a 186mph (300kph) top speed, especially with aero/wind resistance. With a 4.10 final gear, you'll be hard pressed to even hit 160 mph.

27

Wish it was in my possession...

28

CSL's are Pretty safe in a crash too! trust me I know.

29

Well done Keane, awesome write up as always Ross :)

Absolutly love this car :D

See yourself and the car tomorrow!

30

Some of the above comments are retarded.....

All things aside, looks great, perfect balance of c/f and paint. Looks like a runner!

32

Drooling.

This is what performance is, along with looks. Understated, but you can tell it will beat your head in if you say anything about it's girl.

33

Really diggin' the shade on those wheels on the body's color along with accented CF parts, especially when you've got upgraded brakes! NICE!

34

@John

I've been in a stock, delimited CSL doing an indicated 185 on the 'ring. Whilst I personally doubt that this one would hit that given the final drive, it's not the gearing that's keeping them from exceeding that, it's a lack of power to overcome the drag. 170 should be doable.

35

Should be called (S.R.C) Straight Racing Car may not be luxurious but gotta admire what this BMW can do

36

Awesome Car. Such a weapon!

37

Absolutely beautiful car. And the mods provide a nice balance between street driveability and track performance.
