Say hello to VW's latest race car, the Golf24. The 440ps turbocharged AWD Golf was built not only to compete at this year's Nurburgring 24 hour race, but to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Volkswagen GTI which also falls this year.
Not a bad way to celebrate a birthday I'd say. This thing looks radical!

I thought N24 used GT1-4 rules, and AWD therefore wasn't permitted?

VW is said to be bringing the Golf R to the US. That's the awd, balsy VW you desire. I haven't looked into it too much, but I'm guessing it'll be available every year. Rather than having to wait for the once-a-generation R32.

@rubberduck Actually VW has been beating all competition in their class at this race for the last couple years. Last years FWD natural gas powered Scirocco-R 's were untouchable. 3 years, 3 class victories with this car. The previous GTI-R's have been just as successful.
Nope, just the "SP9" uses GT3 and the new "SP10" the GT4 rules. There are still plenty other classes left, i don't know atm where it is going to start in. Not in SP9/GT3 class.

But as far as i heard this Golf is meant to compete for overall victory and i absolutely can't imagine that this one is able to come along with all the starters this year. Nobody really knows what the huge crowd of Merc SLS AMG does, maybe the Audi R8 last for the race this year, the BMW works M3 as well as the Z4GT3, which i guess improved a lot during 2010 season (and last year they came in on #3). And above all, the big Manthey - Show we're going to see.
Please VW!!! Throw a Lambo V10 in it and bring it over to race in the ALMS GT class!
