I just saw this amazing video of the late Colin McRae during the WRC Portugal in 1997. The 80,000 crazy fans that are packed around stage one are truly insane, but at the same time I would have loved to have been there with them.

This was actually from the 94 season. I remember it well.
I've never heard them actually comment about it. Seriously though you'd think the fans would learn after Group B.

It was this kind of stupidity that got us to where we are today in Rallying... lower powered cars, very few closed road events and stupid ticket prices for official WRC event spectating. Dumb ass fans.
irresponsible to continue an event like this. irresponsible by the organizer aswell by the drivers to go on like this.

My friend used to race Rally in Europe and said it was a nasty sight to see after you finish your race that it was uncommon at time to find fingers on the side grills or blood from possible hand being cut from splitters and wings because of the gallery being way too close and always someone wanting to just want to touch the car as it passes by. Very NASTY!

These times are long gone thankfully. People are now much aware that not always the rally driver is in full control...
But this was mainly a problem of the organization! They couldn't/didn't handle this properly.
Although I agree with the above statements of EduFSantos, this isn't the best video for us to fell proud. Still a great rally that is no more (it now moved south to Algarve region)...

We in Portugal are very entusiastic by rallys. It's a shame what now the people don't go to races like the use to...
strange that the spectator situation was still this bad in portugal after what happened there in 1986. doesn't look like they learned anything, interesting the drivers were still willing to drive or that they were even allowed to drive there.
