Random Snap>> Reflection Of Change

One of the stories I had originally planned to do for Photography Month was to shoot a local Classic Car show with a circa 1950s FED-3 Rangefinder camera. With the camera loaded with Fuji ISO100 Colour Slide film I shot the entire roll and had my local lab run the roll through the regular C41 process, which cross processes the film and gives some strange colours on the final images. Unfortunately scanning the negatives was too time consuming so the full post probably won't ever materialise unless I can find a way to slow down time (I may need to borrow Rod's art pants for that)

Shooting film every now and then reminds me of just how easy we have it in todays digital world. The ability to instantly review an image is something we take for granted along with being able to shoot thousands of images in a day with no developing costs. The FED-3 has no lightmeter, no autofocus and no electronic assistance for the user. If you forget what ISO film you have in, you'll just have to hope and remember it ! With all this in mind, take a look at John Brook's fantastic post on the F1 photo archives of Sutton Motorsport. It definitely changed my approach to photography and I'd actively encourage you to seek out an old film camera at home and go snapping, you'll definitely learn from it.

Used to love cross processing slide! As a student it was way cheaper than getting the positives properly developed. Tut tut, for not using Velvia though ;)

x processing is amazing. But your right about film and how easy we have made it with digital now. I still regulary use my lomo lc-a with slide film. It sometimes can be difficult to find places round by me that want to cross process which is frustrating. but when you do its worth it. No control of the colours but it works incredibly well. I've got a box full of photos that are x process from an lc-a and it's awesome to go through it every now and then. Good post paddy, would be good to see some more of these photos!

Yay!!!!! I am a photojournalist myself, but I work in the TV world now. I run almost exclusively film in my fun stuff. The FED 3 distills it even further. The grab bag I run with has a FED 2, Zorki 6 and a Kiev 2, all for different reasons. I would love to see your stuff posted some day. Digital is nice and easy, but I think the film keeps us honest. If it ain't in the viewfinder, it ain't in the image.
