News>>ft-86 Delayed Until 2013?

Here's some not particularly good news regarding everyone's favorite automobile of the future – the Toyota FT-86. Word out of Japan is that the release of the car has been pushed back to 2013, possibly to rethink the design or even to accommodate hybrid technology.

Considering the overwhelming positive response the concept has had, I can't see any reason why a re-design would be in order, but who knows what goes on behind closed doors at Toyota?

If true, this could be a pretty big setback to the people around the world waiting for this car. Then again, Japan's automotive tabloids aren't always the most legit source of information. Hopefully we'll hear more about this soon.

2

Crap, Consumer Reports must have discovered that it can break the rear wheels loose in a turn.

I think the name FT-86 stands for Finally Toyota, it's 2086

3

too bad cuz I was really waiting for that car...

4

Wow. This really sucks ass!

COME ON Toyota. Stop turning your back on the enthusiasts!!!!

Hope this report is false.

5

Sad, I was looking forward to this car.

6

damn you prius brake pedal!!!!

7

Really? I think everybody missed another news about this car, namely about that it is no longer called FT-86. And is turning into less fun car for any speedhunter. So we'll miss you, true AE 86 successor;(( http://jalopnik.com/5521080/report-toyotas-turning-the-ft+86-into-the-solara

9

The source is Japan's Best Car...really reliable. But yeah, Toyota deserves a facepalm for not having this NOW.

10

They're probably trying to figure out how to put a hybrid FWD platform in it with an automatic transmission.

Because Toyota currently likes to disappoint.

12

"who knows what goes on behind closed doors at Toyota?"

-lots and lots of gay. also smoking pot and playing acoustic guitar.

13

maybe they finally decided to replace the flat 4 with a turbo L4 :D

14

This better not be true!

15

Maybe Toyota's working with Tesla (new partnership) on a engine transplant redesign to make this sucka an all electric car with some bad ass batteries so this 86 can dish out mad ass torque?!?

16

NO!! Toyota, please get your act together. Obviously it will be more tame looking then that sick interior.

17

toyota is just full of suck ever since 2000.

hybrid

nothin sporty

sticky gas pedals

now this?!

18

I heard that they are delaying it due to the incredibly low sales numbers of 2 door cars the market is currently experiencing.

19

This will be my first car when I will get a job...so Toyota stop messing around and start the production please...we're tired of seeing Prius everywhere!

20

Great!!! a Subaru is a Subaru and Toyota is a Toyota.

If subaru wants a coupe then make the WRX a 2 door. DUH??

Toyota body and Toyota motor period. Now the is a proper 86.

21

that really chaps my hide!

22

I was really pumped for this car, but the constant set backs and delays is a huge turn off. In short: 'Toyota, I am disappoint'.

23

Seriously? I was gonna get one of these... If it's a hybrid i'm not anymore.. I should've known it was far too good to be true. My newfound hope for a fun Toyota is starting to diminish...

24

At least this give me more time to save some money!!!

25

…I also, do hope that is false remour, as i was most looking forward to see a fun drivers Toyota car again, Finally !, (rwd, not this fwd malarkey, because its cheaper for most manufactures to make with boring everyday fwd).

26

Wow. This really sucks ass!

COME ON Toyota. Stop turning your back on the enthusiasts!!!!

Hope this report is false.

27

Soooo, its going to be released alongside gran turismo 5??

28

wow,,,,, hybrid ... how gay can you get

30

NO HYBRID!

NO NO NO NO NO!

31

Awwww I was planning on buying this car in 2 years........ :(

32

Oh great, another hybrid? Whats the point to bring back the 86 if they gonna put a hybrid? There goes the fun and whole point of making the car.

33

don't make it a hybrid! just don't.

34

Toyota I hope you read all of the comments through all the articles from all auto sites.

Because you just broke everyones heart. Plus mine.

35

The world is gonna end in 2012 so what different does it make

36

honestly, why even bother with a remake of an ae86? for the price of that new car, i could build the baddest ae86 and have plenty of money left over for spares and track days. if you want something fun and affordable, don't even look to anything new. buy something from the 80's and dump a few grand in to making it reliable and fun. just my $.02

37

They might as well not even bother now. I'm sure it's fine the way it is and like we already know the response is great so it would definitely sell. Not sure about that if these changes happen though. Shame.

38

Guys, just a mention here - I translated the document from Japanese to English and then Autoblog linked us up.

So the source is in fact 7tune.com

I'm sure Mike will fix that once he has a moment :)

39

Put a stake in it! I hope toyota just kills this project entirely. I would rather not have a new car then another beige mobile lame-o hybrid. Toyota can suck it on this one.

40

Maybe they realised using a gay Subaru engine was a bad idea, and actually realised they make better engines themselves, so lets design one with a decent Toyota engine in it?

41

im really suprised that u guys still have hope for the ft86, seriously why not start buying a ae86 now and spend your hard earned money and restore a ae86 for track, drift or fun, whatever cars that u like such as fc3s, s13 etc any car that can put a smile on your face and then buy something practical enough for daily use. better than spending money trying to make a gay (possibly) hybrid car go fast???? at the end of the day, i dont reckon the ft86 will be able to provide the fun factor and the rawness that any old school FR sports car gave us and that was what lure alot of people into cars. in my opinion, the nissan S15 was the last new car that gave me that tin can direct feeling of driving a "sports car" , even a standard one will put a smile in your face and that era has gone for 10 years now dont think its gonna come back.

42

Well aren't we all a bunch of negativity... A couple of years' delay and words of speculation and suddenly you think Toyota is the worst thing ever. I mean really, learn some damn patience. This is the reason Toyota are being so cautious - Just because thousands of people *on the internet* want the car doesn't directly equate to sales. Toyota hasn't become the biggest auto manufacturer in the world for nothing.

43

Are you reading Toyota??...??

What do we want?? - FT86!! when do we want it?? NOW!!

44

The subaru engine is a turn off. I have beated plenty of WRX with my 4AGZE, and at least my car doesnt sound like its got busted valves.

45

i wonder whats the msrp on the "gts" model when it comes out. toyota matches its commercial, "toyota moving forward" EVEN IF YO DONT WANT IT TO!!!! and now even the release date is moving forward.

46

Car companies have been shying away from sports cars as of late, you know, they are expensive to develop and high risk to sell. Quite simply, not only does the performance have to be up to scratch, more than any other segment of the market, they have to be cool too.

The FT86 was that, no gimmicks and junk, 2 litre, 6 speed, rear wheel drive, and not outrageously expensive. A recipe for success and I believed they could not get to to the market soon enough.

Now we are seeing delays, price rises, raising of the target age, possible hybrid engine, it is now a recipe for disaster, not going to sell well if it ever comes out, and essentially it is toyota flushing money down the train.

Will be sticking to my AE82 for a while yet thank you very much.

47

just give it to me already. i want my ft-86. i will even park it in my bedroom. dying for it.

48

The FT-86 is needed to badly being that most of us regular folks will never be able to afford a LF-A. The whole hybrid/performance thing is such a paradox for me and I think it is one of the most ridiculous ideas ever. Hybrids are meant to save gas performance are meant build power. POWER = LOW MPG. Wouldn't mind seeing the Subaru engine back though, because Subaru engine can make power and with the right modifications and some imagination it make for an awesome performance car.

49

To be honest I think the right redesign could only improve the look. I don't particularly like the rear end of the current concept so having Toyota slim it down would be nice. Also the current car is rumored to be heavy as hell. So a weight could also be in order

50

I will be surprised if Toyota actually produces this car. And if they do produce it, I will be even more surprised if it is actually a sporty vehicle.

Let's face it--Toyota has not produced an exciting vehicle in a decade--not since the Supra Mk IV. They produce boring vehicles that are little more than appliances that get you from Point A to Point B. And it's easy to produce appliances, because no one will judge them on how they handle or accelerate.

I don't think Toyota has the testicular fortitude to produce a sports car.

51

wtf toyota!! they havent released a "sporty car" in a long ass time!!

only retARDED hybrid cars!
