Event>> Wtac – The Main Event

Anything could have happened today at the World Time Attack Challenge in Eastern Creek Raceway. The top cars were very evenly matched but it was the Cyber Evo/Garage HRS team that came away victorious. After spending most of yesterday fitting a new engine they were back in top form this morning allowing Tarzan to get to business right away with a fastest lap of 1:30:587.

Tarzan was a very happy man!!

It was great to see that two out of the four Japanese teams that made it to the event were on the podium…

…the Sierra Sierra driven by David Empringham grabbing second spot…

…with the Tomei/Cusco/Voltex Impreza coming in third position, just 0.017 sec behind!

Of course it was Tarzan Yamada behind the wheel of the blue/white/red Impreza, which meant he is bringing home two trophies!

The Panspeed RX-7 finished in a respectable fifth position behind the GT3-spec Prep'd Motorsport Elise.

The Panspeed car was rocking strategically placed Speedhunters stickers! Thanks guys!

Mark Berry in the Advan/Hi Octane Racing R34 GT-R managed to come in 6th position with a 1:34:109…

…with the team satisfied with the performance of the car against the top level Time Attack machines.

Kinoshita, at the wheel of the R-Magic RX-7, was looking all set to pin down a real fast time with the car…

…after his mechanics sorted out all the little gremlins they had the previous day, including convincing the scrutineer that a fuel tank in the passenger seat is great for optimal weight balance.

Despite that, the gearbox ended up failing, putting an end to R-Magic's hopes. Here is the car cruising back towards the pits feeling sorry for itself.

The Cyber Evo could have probably gone faster than its track-record-breaking time (previously set in 1999 by Mark Skaife's V8 Supercar – running on slicks)…

…but right as Tarzan was going for one more attempt the massive rear Voltex wing literally ripped off the CFRP trunk, bringing most of the top section with it. This occurred because the wing was directly bolted onto the trunk, not onto a self-supporting frame directly connected to the chassis.

Eventually the spoiler, along with the pice of the C-West trunk, made it back to the pits! I'm sure the Cyber Evo and Garage HRS team learned a lesson today!

Despite the unexpected mishap however, Tarzan already knew he had pretty much won. Here he is looking very pleased in the Tomei pit.

It's been a very exciting and busy three days at Eastern Creek. I will be taking a deeper look at the event, especially all the other cars that participated in the other classes, not to mention the usual walk through the paddock and pits. Make sure you don't miss the rest of our Australian Speedhunting coverage as there is a lot more to come.

Great event! Dino, thx for covering!

All hail Cyber EVO!

2

would be cool if we can get a desktop of the cyber evo...

3

tarzan yamada rules!!! =D

4

What an amazing weekend. The thrill and suspense was there until the very end, pity about the finals being Cancelled. If they ran them and someone beat the Cyber evo.. tarzan couldnt get his spot back with the boot ruined.. just wouldn't have had the downforce without it.

Very stressfull and full of emotions.. great motorsport!

5

First of all, GREAT coverage Dino! I'm very happy with the Evo's representing! Congrats to Tarzan and the Cyber Evo team. I would have loved to see the Cobb GTR and HKS CT230 as well, maybe next year.

6

Congrats to Garage HRS / Cyberevo for winning the World time attack, great job Hiro san, and great driving Tarzan san,

despite the car pblm that happened.also congrats to tarzan for bringing home 2 trophies.

7

Cyber Evo's the rising-sun frag is very beautiful!

By the way,Cyber Evo's mechanic is not Garage HRS but Unlimited Works.

8

WOW!!! Congrats to Cyber Evo/Garage HRS team.

I think that the technical term for a 2sec gap is an "Ass Spanking". Just goes to show that the Japanese really do know what they are doing!

9

JAPAN WILL ALWAYS BE KING OF TIME ATTACK!

10

cyber evo rules =D

11

Yea awesome race you guy's but dissapointed tat the rx-7 couldn't show's it true POWAH!! None the last there's alway's next year..

12

Last Photo is excellent :)

13

Wallpaper of 1,14 please. There aren't many evo TA wallpapers on here. Only the ct230r which had a date on it. It would be greatly appreciated.

14

well atleast we got 2nd

15

Just bring a lot of desktop.

But this event looks like Japan Supremacy.

And we miss the CT230R but certainly was a good event.

With the best of americans and the best of aussie but there where not the best of Japan.

Thanks people.

16

What an EPIC event. The suspense was killer each day as I'd wait to see what the results were through this site. Congrats to Tarzan and the Cyber Evo and Tomai Impreza teams and to the Sierra Sierra team. 2nd is very impressive.

17

Why no pictures of the little Lotus Exige that kicked ass...?

18

Nice meeting you guys yesterday, good work

19

Dam that Cyber Evo was making some crazy downforce!

20

maybe Mr. Tarzan Yamada is serious about his "Nobuteru "NOB" Taniguchi too slow for me" jokes...

21

Need some desktops!

22

Thumbs up to Empringham!

23

Great work Dino/Rod, was great to work and meet with you guys!

24

Was a crazy two days! I met Tarzan and got my photo with him :P you can almost see me in 3rd piccy too!

25

Now thats what I call downforce! Maybe S2 Evo needs a Voltex wing lol. Its kind of surprising that a highly dominant car like the Cyber Evo had its wing entirely supported by the trunk.

26

Nice event.

Some nice pics from this event. Makes me want to buy a camera again.

I look forward to some creative video...

27

Congratulations to Nik Kalis for taking out the win in club class with a 1.44'3 on street tyres!

28

Need more!! want to see other cars besides pro.. think 2 guys from up the road competed want to know for sure though

29

They failed to mention that the v8 super car still weighed 3000lbs and has to run a straight axle with narrower tires..

30

voltex's credibility just went up a million :awestruck:

31

What a great day! It was a lot of fun standing up on the hill watching turns 2 through 7. That Panspeed RX7 was shooting massive flames. Standing in the pits as they were all tuning the cars was incredible, having the pits open was probably the best part of the day, wandering the carpark was fun too- so many KE series Corrollas!

32

Why are there no wallpapers? This was a huge event

33

Great to meet you guys at the media centre on Saturday. Keep up the great work with this fantastic site!

34

Epic is the only word to describe this event... and I can't believe I got to meet you and Rod there too!! Haha you guys are celebrities in my eyes! Sorry about the paparazzi-ing at the show and shine, Dino! You look a little taken aback in the photo I got of you haha!!! And tell Rod to carry some more stickers next time!!!

35

A Mitsubishi Evo on ADVANs won every category; pro, open and clubsprint class.

37

@ Supreme - there is plenty of time, lots of content to sort through and lots to post, especially many desktops!

38

I am a Tarzan fan. And having a driver of his calliber just driving your car a complimentof exceptional value.

Isn't allowing the same driver to drive different cars a potential conflict of interest?

and dosen't that stifelle oppertunities for other worthy drivers?

39

mario is jerry

40

Please give us desktops!!! TIA

41

looks like sierra got spanked!! Dentist vs. Ex-formula team.... DENTIST WINS!

42

@Casey Dhnaram SWEET thank you. I will be waiting. Make sure at least one is of the Cyber if anything.

43

The V8 supercars run to a formula with a max rev limit and roughly 650Hp from there 5 litre push rod engines.... they also set there lap record during a race not a one lap sprint with low fuel and new tyres. Also for the record it is an A1 GP car (remember them?) with the lap record of 1:19..... Just my 2 cents worth.

44

CRAZY AWESOME love it!

45

I wonder if they allow Full chassis cars next year. There is a S2 audi that would be nice to see. And it comes from Finland.

Awesome coverage guys - as always. It was good having you at the event and we're glad you had a good time. Things couldn't have gone better with so much excitement on the track. We were so lucky not to get a drop of rain despite really wet forecasts!

It was a massive job to put this event on, but as everything worked out, the trader alley was full, as was the car show and we've had enough spectators to put bigger, more established events to shame.

Not to mention the coverage you guys provided made this a truly international events.

Congratulations to Tarzan and David for putting in an awesome effort. It was a weekend we won't forget for a while:)

47

Hmm ... sounds great. Will have to make sure I make the drive down to watch it next time =D.

But yea, great that a TA car can break the record of those antiquated V8 Supercar.
