GALLERY>> ROTARIES & MAZDAS @ TAS 2010

The best way to sort through all the material I got from the Tokyo Auto Salon is to divide things up a little and for this first in-depth post I've decided to concentrate on the best rotaries I spotted…along with a couple of other Mazdas. The RE-Amemiya stand in the first Hall has always been the first stand I visit and this year Amemiya-san had prepared a few nice cars starting with this RX8 fitted with the same aero as on Suenaga's new D1 machine. I think the bumper looks much better with the black mesh/grille rather than the silver one used on the D1 car.

We have seen this car at a few different shows and locations over the last year so it made sense for the guys at RE Amemiya to bring it to TAS to keep all the itasha fans happy! Graphics are by Art Factory.

Yep, here it is, the wildest FD3S time attack car ever built. We all know this car has tons of potential to go much faster at Tsukuba and I hope 2010 is the year they get the best out of it!

I saw Ken Amemiya drive this lime green Super GReddy 3 into the show hall on Thursday for the set-up. The kit is pretty wild, I remember shooting the original silver car a few years back, but it still manages to look very modern now. The full 12-piece kit is yours for just over $16,000!

I posted a picture of last year's Genki 7 on the Set-up day entry, but for the show the front wheel covers were fitted giving it that UFO look! Wheel covers aside, it is a great looking car especially from this angle, and the darker blue really works well.

RE-Amemiya at its best when seen from the back!

I thought this was a wild idea! A lightweight 13B fitted into a featherweight Westfield chassis, sprinkled with a heavy dose of RE-Amemiya creativity. The result is something very interesting. I will have to dedicate a spotlight post to this car as it looks like nothing out there.

See what I mean about the grille? It will be interesting to see how Suenaga will do with this new RX8 when he will jump in it for this year's Fuji Speedway round at the beginning of June.

Check out the height of that rear wing!

Komoriya-san at Pan Speed knows a thing or two about building extremely fast RX7s. I have been meaning to drop by their shop to do a Car Builder post and to take a closer look to cars like their stripped out time attack machines as well as this street-tuned demo car.

We all know how fast this monster is!

This is the 1994 Abflug Pink Spider-7, an original "Mid Night" member that used to race on the wangan back in the days. It has been freshened up and repainted for 2010 and looks just as good as it did back in the nineties. Check out those twin center-exit exhausts!

Lots of polishing and chrome plating under the hood, a beautifully presented engine bay. Thanks to the 520 PS the Trust T78 helps develop the car maxes out at 313 km/h (195 mph) and can run the quarter mile in 10.9 sec.

Not a rotary but I really liked the look of the Mazda Axela from Autoexe. The car is fitted with stiffer more sports-oriented suspension while boosting power is a carbon ram-air type air box and sports exhaust.

Their NC-03B fitted with one of the nicest front bumpers I've seen for the new-gen Roadster. Simplicity sometimes is the way to go.

A rear shot where you can see the sports exhaust.

This was my favorite RX7 of the show, the widebody Total Car Produce Magic FD. You can expect to see more of this car in D1 this year, or should I say hear it? Up front it will run a R26B 4-rotor NA motor, much like the one fitted to Mad Mike's car. Buzzing 4-rotor goodness!

Famed rotary tuner and race car builder Knight Sports has created this 13B-REW powered SE3P that will participate in this year's Macau endurance race.

Thought the Mt.Fuji graphics on the sides were very cool!

The Leg Sport aero fitted to this RX8 looked very fresh, especially the carbon hood with central air intake.

Just look at the stance on the Fujita Engineering demo car. The FD3S was wearing new matte black 20-inch Yokohama RS-Ds, fitted only for the show.

I spotted another new D1-machine for 2010, still a kind of work in process. Like the TCP-Magic FD, this R-Magic SE3 will be running a custom built 4-rotor motor!

Takayama should have well over 600 HP at his disposal when this engine is all finished up! Loving all these crazy rotary builds! Can't wait to hear it out on track.

And talking of crazy builds, the most out there of them all. Revolution's FD pushes time attack creations to new levels with a full carbon lightweight body made in cooperation with RE-Amemiya…

…as well as a highly tuned 13B running an HKS T04Z. Look at the packaging in the engine bay. A true work of art.

And to finish off this look at the best rotaries from the show I've picked the RE-Wing FD, a car I've only seen once before. Very nice and simple looking exterior highlighted by the white Prodirve GC-10G wheels.

A Trust T7833-D is the turbine of choice while all piping is custom. Look at the thickness of that intercooler!! All good for 520 HP.
More to come from TAS soon!
