New Cars>> Toyota Ft86 Concept

After so many rumors I think our prayers have been heard, at least at the design studio of Toyota in France. They designed this successor of the Corolla AE86 that will be debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show. Luckily for us Dino will be covering this show so I’m sure he will get us all the details surrounding this car.

I do know that it will be powered by a 2.0 liter boxer engine that has been developed by Subaru and that it will be rear wheel driven. The engine has been placed as far back as possible.

As you can see there are some styling cues from the old Hachiroku. The object was to make a very light compact sports car because Toyota doesn’t have something like that at the moment in their line-up.

It is already being said that the car will be put into production in 2011. I for one can’t wait to see this car go into production, finally some good news regarding the car industry.

I think this design falls very very short. The idea and drivetrain sounds good but i see absolutely zero design cues taken from the 'hachiroku'. zero. unless you count the fact that it has kind of a fastback/hatchback shape. Honestly it looks much more like a baby RX8 than a corolla. This might have been an interesting concept if it had come out in 2002.

2

I dunno what to say about this... looks like a nice car but not really HachiRoku worthy... Styling ques? Call me blind or stuppid but I can't see any except maybe for some sudle ones of the overall shape. I tried hard for the last 30min to see the HachiRoku and it isn't quite there yet. A lil. bit of a dissapointment, styling wise, looking more like another plastok car... The fact that they went for a lightweight compact car is great news! That it's RWD is awesome, fantastic (all the great words) news! And that it's supposed to have a engine as far back as possible is another great thing.

But why boxer!? Toyota doesn't know how to make engines anymore? Why did they need Subaru to bud in?

From a certain point of view, I think that the Toyota guys should ask Carlos, the Nissan owner, how to make a worthy successor out of a legend that has grown into a cult follow up; cause the Nissan guys sure did a perfectly awesome job at renewing the lineage of the Skyline!

3

I love it!!!! WANT ONE! I hope it will be rwd as well!

4

nice, I've had a Corolla Trueno Liftback '77, and somehow, this car remind me my own car

5

WOW, hope its driftable in stock form

6

YEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

7

Yes, there will will be a new "Hachiroku"!

And with a boxer heart, that's sexy! ;-) (Are there any AE86 with boxerhearts, yet?)

Good to see that nice colab between Toyota and Subaru come true.

The empire strikes back!

8

I will definitely be in line to get my hands on one.

9

oh my sweet god. the prophecy has been fulfilled.

10

I absolutely love it. I hope they actually release it looking like this (with a normal interior obviously, because this one doesn't really like it'll reach the production model). I don't really care that it doesn't look like the AE86, I mean come on it's a very very old car and (in stock trim) pretty ugly tbh. I mean what'd you expect? Headlights that fold down and a boxy design....?

11

I will also be attending the press opening for the TMS and am personally looking forward to seeing how well the marriage between Toyota and Subaru is progressing. I think what is more important for me, when it comes to Japanese cars anyway, is the fact that I tend to overlook external styling and take a closer look inside the car because when you think about it, not even captain Picard on the Enterprise had it this good. Japanese concept cars belong in science fiction where robots are dominating alien planets in them. To see a car on the road with an interior like this, in REAL life, would be enough to induce a heart attack if one was old enough to be the beneficiary of one.

The fact that its is a RWD is even more bewildering because in recent memory, the best sports car to have come out swinging from the rear, and from both manufacturers, is the Supra and that is more than 10 years old! Curse me Chaser and Crown owners but curse me at the expense of your bigger, faster and more handsome brother, the Supra!

Nothing in Toyota's lineup was ever designed, engineered and manufactured as sports oriented than the Supra and one has to go back another 10 years to find the 86 which is even more seminal of a car.

This news can only be good news for anyone who loves Toyota RWD cars.

12

Yea sideview looks like RX8

13

dude, i don't think it matters if it doesn't resemble the corollas of old. after all, this is the future, why would toyota regress.... i think the whole point of this car is to fill the special niche that toyota created with the ae86, but then allowed to die off. a light, compact, well balanced rear wheel / front engine car that is affordable to consumers is all i'm really hoping for this to be. who cares if it doesn't look like a ae86, the look is classic but very outdated. we should all be happy that automakers are bringing back the class of cheap rwd sports coupes thats been dead since 1999.

14

are you kidding me?

its friggin awesome!

in profile especially, it looks like a v8 vantage...

sort of...

bit pinker...

uglier wheels...

rear diffusor is just plain ugly...

in fact, the entire back end is really.....

uhm.. never mind...

15

I like the look of this car

16

Yes, yes, yes... Ooh yes! The right shape, the right motive, purpose... A giant nail in the eye of every cheapskape carmanifacturer who thinks front wheel drive sports cars are dynamicaly adequat. This is going to sell in the amounts the old MX-5 did. Brilliant!

17

Dont forget to post blogs about Forza Motorsport 3 that is coming 23 oct, will be the best racing game on a consol ever..

Read everything on my blog mike and Jeroen.. you will find that i raced a Tournament with speedhunters design on my car... =)

18

too bad the toyota version is a japan only model as of now. we probably won't get this in the states. hopefully the subaru version looks as cool

19

Nice car, but for me it has nothing in common with hachiroku.

20

Ok Jon Sibal, where are you? Show us the potential of this thing :)

21

It looks like if a GT-R had a wild night with the Audi R8, but when midnight came around, the LF-A also had it's way.

Well, ok, maybe not and R8, but still. GT-R in the mid, R8-ish in the front, and LF-A-ish (or the FT-HS) in the rear. I'm pretty excited about it.

22

For real this will be a goal I'm shooting for! My next car :)

23

Where oh where have my flip up head lights gone.

It looks nice, but really you can't beat the real thing...

24

Ass is ugly, side is Ferrariesque..............front is 370zish........engine is Subaruish..........yea its a Hachi alright lol..............NOOOOOT............I think they should sell it as a new fresh idea not a Roku....

25

The hachi's design is over 25 years old, and trying to redo the same styling would force it to be another New Beetle or new Mini.

I'm just glad that Toyota have finally produced something thats semi-exciting and people will want to buy.... I also hope it fires Nissan up so there is a return of the Silvia.

26

I agree with the above posters. It's a beautiful car, should be fast too, but it is far from an AE86 successor.

27

It will no doubt be a better performance car than the AE86, but 25 years later that doesn't say a lot. I think the motor will be awesome, and i'm sure the balance of the car will be superb. This will most likely be a fun car to drive.

28

well what do (some of) you people want then? a completely square 80's throwback with pop up headlamps?... (cuz i do :P)

29

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I DESPISE THE SOUND OF A BOXER MOTOR..... SORRY SCOOBY AND PORSCHE LOVERS ...THEY JUST ALWAYS SOUND LIKE THEYRE MISFIRING....I LOVE THE HARMONY OF AN INLINE 4,

EFFIN SUBARU!! BUILD YOUR OWN CARS AND GET OFF TOYOTA AND SAABS JUNK, I LIKE STI'S THO

30

This car is just awsome, and please dan't say it looks like a 370Z because the its based on the 2007 FT-HS.

31

...how current is this news that it's actually going to be put into production? As far as I understood, this project had been scrapped due to the economy/

32

All they have to focus on is lightweight (sub 2600lbs) and RWD. The rest doesn't matter much since that in itself will put it in its own category. The Fiat 500 Abarth is probably coming state side, sub 2400 lbs with a decent engine, have the sporty, affordable (sorry Mini Cooper), lightweight, front wheel drive market cornered. Let’s see some real innovation Toyota.

33

"Nice car, but for me it has nothing in common with hachiroku."

You mean aside from being a 2-door, 4-cylinder, affordable, good-looking, RWD car that should be a joy to drive? You're spot on!

And if anyone mentions anything about flip-up headlights, I'd like to point you towards the AE86 Levin.

I for one think this is simply awesome, from mechanicals (so far) to design. I hope the interior of the production car retains the simplicity brought forth on the Concept, and for the love of god, keep the sunroof crowd away from this thing. It looks great as a "slick-top", not even mentioning the benefits of lower CG and more interior headroom, as well as lower cost.

Bravo, Toyota, now just don't **** it up!

34

An AE86 isnt famous for its shape or style, although that plays a significant part of the AE86's glory, but its more the driving feel/Fun you have when your in it. If this FT-86 can produce as much fun driving it as the AE86 does then I dont care what it looks like.

35

sign me up, where's the line start?

36

looks cool!

37

looks cool!

38

I really like this, great concept, sleek, aerodynamic, not too small not too big, great stance, loving the mean looking rear, mainly the tail lights, should look fantastic in black car, the widened fenders give the muscular feel a car this size needs, RWD, fantastic torquey boxer engine, Loving the front side columns as well. This ate alive the genesis and should give a good battle with the Nissan Z.

39

Also, I think it's hot. Whether or not is -looks- like an AE86 or not, it seems like it will have similar performance capability.

40

What gives!? Where's my comment gone?!

41

Well, i like it a lot, it's very stylish and is pushing the envelope. the tail-light assembly is very much to my liking and if anything reminds me of an FD (not a bad thing at all! :D)

.

The c-pillar and single-brake-light-in-diffuser seem to be ripped from the 370Z though.

.

all in all i'm very excited to see this thing materialize, maybe i'll get it! being a die-hard VW and subaru fan, i love (read: LOVE) flat fours, so this to me is the ideal.

42

To Jake (and everybody who doubts): Be sure it is coming to production. Just wait 3 years and you will get a brochure. When choosing accesories, you can tick all the things you need: proper LSD, leather three spoke steering wheel (hopefully signed by NARDI artists) and leather shiftknob. All accessories, that will make huge grin on your face. Loads of people wait for it for god damn long time ... and Toyota will listen their prayers (now with Akio taking lead - pity he didn`t came earlier).

Don`t forget, it is just a concept now, so this design version is the test of public reactions. Count on overall shape including doors, that`s it. Front and rear will most likely change. Hopefully it will get more of hachiroku heritage.

Good days of Toyota are coming back.

O.

43

car looks soo ugly! there is NO WAY that this car is anything like the legendary AE86.

design looks like a cheap-O hyundai or G35

toyota has fallen far

44

Seriously just take the car for what it is.

6 Speed RWD Boxer, I see nothing wrong with this.

Maybe they should rename it a Celica or Scion so all you 86 whiners will shut up.

45

Looks more to me like a 370Z and GTR lovechild than an AE86. Also, it need some serious fender flares in the back. The fronts have them, it looks good from the front. But we're talking about something that partially came from Subaru. I expected something more muscular.

Despite my issues, I will probably be trading in my 2000 Celica GT-S for this.

46

i dont see any resemblance with the older 86 we loved. what i see is MRS-ish / RX8-ish side profile. looking at the doors to the windshield from the sideview , it kinda resembles a GTR. the fron is IS-F (is it F? haha. forgot that one.) now that i think about it, the side profile kina reminds me of the genesis (please dont burn me at a stake). hehehe. I love the rear

But i love it. 6 Speed FTW!!

47

I cant believe this is a Toyota! Its too good looking to be Toyota! This might help their company image of having the ugliest new cars in the past 4 yrs.

49

If it doesn't have a turbo i'm not interested.

50

I don't think it was supposed to look like a 86, but have the spirit of the 86. Affordable, light weight, fun to drive car... Toyota doesn't really do the retro thing any ways. Just look at all their models... does the MK3 Supra look like an MK1... Celica is nothing like the original... etc... I personally like it, but wish it was more curvy like some of the sketches that we see float around.

51

it looks AMAZING!!! but i mite need to drop an ej25 / 2jz nd i'll be good

52

Stop the fantasy swaps the only thing that fits under the hood of this is a boxer or 13B. I'm happy that they didn't go with a I4 because of that low hood.

53

ewwwwwwww!!

54

is this the same colab that got delayed; if so i perfered the design with the subaru logo:

http://www.speedhunters.com/archive/2008/12/23/news-gt-gt-toyota-subaru-fr-project-delayed-until-2012.aspx

55

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

I think I have the right to hate.....but time will tell

56

If it costs anything more than $20,000 it won't have anything in common with the AE86.

We, the enthusiasts don't want a Toyota sports car. We want a cheap RWD car that has got good economy and even better sticker price.

Toyota, don't go spending money on a fancy design that none of us can afford, especially in this economic market.

57

For the 20k range and a rear wheel drive car I don't think I would complain.

58

Hmm... IDN about the Boxer motor... Ive alwease been more keen about Toyota's own motors... there bulletproof reliabilty and the high rev's. Still tho... I love the rear difuser looking bumper... hmm.... ive this car is cheap and simple (i fukn hate traction control and leather and power everything) I serously think I might have to pick one up.

59

I don't think it's very good looking. There isn't very much about it that says AE86...

But I've already started putting money in a jar for one.

60

Reminds me of a smaller LF-A

61

Reminds me of a smaller LF-A

62

has skyline roofline

63

Looks almost exactly like the Toyota prototype FT-HS (but less aggressive), Also reminds me too much of the Nissan R35 GTR. I think Toyota should rethink the body for sure (doesnt look like a AE86 at all!)

64

I'm digging the look. And since it takes after the 86, does this mean no power steering? I would love to see a modern underpowered car which is economical but could also take to the track for drift days. I'm really rooting for Toyota to set this up as a drift car to go against the camero, genesis, etc. Remember, power isn't everything in a car...

65

I can't believe Toyota are making such an awesome car, but putting a piece of shit Subaru engine in it. Totally puts me off. Otherwise this shit looks cool. Toyota reliability is second-to-none, so I'm calling fail.

67

I don't know about any of you, but this is one of the nicest COROLLA's I've ever seen.

I'm just happy to see that it's not front wheel drive, and it's not frumpy and ugly like recent Corollas and the Prius! Seriously, some of your guys just love to complain!!!

68

for all you loosers out there saying this car does not resemble a hachi roku, i got one thing to say to you toyota is not like these stupid american car auto makers that belief in "retro style" which is complete bs a new car is suppose to be new in all aspects, the last supra did not look anything like the supra before and so on same could be said about any toyota car celica, mr2..., its a NEW model eveything is new its a hachi roku because its a 2 door compact rear wheel drive car from toyota, the car looks perfect in every aspect and its completely original... all said

69

I have a couple of friends who work at Fuji Heavy Industries and although it's difficult to glean information from them about these concepts, I do know that it WILL go into production, there WON'T be a turbo version and although the motor is Subaru built, it will use Toyota variable valve timing technology.

I like the body and wheels, but I wouldn't choose that colour, and the dashboard is a little to 'out there' for me.

70

Nice car, but NOT a 86. If Toyota wants to revive the 86, they need to take a serious look into AE86 forums and what not over the internet and learn what makes the 86 such a legend.

I agree with the fun factor, if this thing is at LEAST just as fun to drive as the AE86, then I can overlook the styling a lil' bit.

Engine wise... THE BOXER HAS TO GO! No offence, the boxer is a great engine on Porsches and STIs and what not, but NOT on a Toyota and most deff NOT on a 86!

Inline 4, inline 6, perfect choice. Like I said earlier; doesn't Toyota know how to make engines anymore or what?

71

"If Toyota wants to revive the 86, they need to take a serious look into AE86 forums and what not over the internet and learn what makes the 86 such a legend."

If they do that, they will only cater for a small audience of very passionate enthusiasts who still own 20 year old cars. Don't get me wrong, I love the hatchi as much as anyone, but I also try to be realistic about the economic sense of the car. I'll give props to Toyota to have the huge balls of coming up with a small, relatively cheap RWD coupe in today's economic context!

For one, I'm very happy they didn't just do a typical expensive or half-assed "retro revival" a la Mini (too expensive compared to the original), Fiat 500 (same) or Mustang (live rear axle and shitty handling)...

72

Toyota tends to be too conservative in terms of styling and aesthetics (consider every production model they have produced for the American market). I doubt the end product will resemble what we see here.

Would anyone reading this know how much horsepower this car is slated to have?

On a lighter note, how long before we see these styling cues on a Hyundai? Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen.

73

@Chris Davy

Be happy it has a boxer and a impreza platform! What do you think if toyota needed to design a small RWD platform and a sporty I4, then there would be no chance that this thing would ever be $20000!

Please people get real, if you want a AE86 go drive your 20 year old corolla. If you want a real sports car get the TS86.

76

They are going to release this as a Scion in North America right? It only makes sense as this car would mainly appeal to the younger crowd. I agree with whoever said the design takes many cues from recent nissan ones.

77

zips on dash are rather... gimpy :o otherwise LOVE IT! The car they should have made 10 years ago! Like an Altezza coupe with a 3SGE would have maybe made more sense then, but this has some large shoes to fill. It will never take the place of the AE86 but would look nice in the driveway along side it.

78

Nothing on or in this car reminds you of the AE86, put a subaru badge on it or Daihatsu badge on it will not not make any difference cuz this concept car has no soul, at least not the hachiroku's. People wil argue the fact that this is the future etc, then why did they call it 86? Just give it another name, I'm not criticizing the design of the car itself, but the concept. Take what Ford made of the GT and Mustang this is what we would expect on a project like that. The Hachiroku was a Corolla, an affordable entry level sports car, light simple, now they've turned it into a big luxury sports car.

The hachiroku thing taken appart, boxer engine + RWD is interesting, but please just don't call it a Hachiroku revival.

79

Give it a few days and nissan will leak an S16 spy shot....

80

its a concept its a little unrealistic. the tailights hatch/fast back remind me of an 86 but other than that who cares its carrying on the spirit of a light compact rwd car. it'll get better

81

Hmm ... I wonder how they did it. Managing to push the front axle rather forward. Really want to take a peek into the engine bay.

Most Subarus need a rather long overhang to fit the boxer engine since it can't really be packaged between the struts.

Anyhow, would be a nice little package if it ever becomes a product.

82

If this car is the same size as an old 86 w/ WRX power numbers = WIN! If alot larger and lower power numbers = LOSE!

83

got give credit to Toyota for being brave enough to put out a sports car like this in this economical climate.. thumbs up.

84

Great looking car but the name REEKS of marketing gimmick. Toyota really can't help adding a bit of marketing into everything they produce can they? They'd better come up with a much better name than FT 86 for production.

85

The Subaru Boxer motor is ugly to look at.

I do not deny the tuning potential from it; but a boosted Scion motor would have done just fine.

The 86 is appealing for its simplicty and raw feel.

Toyota should Follow Hyundai in offering different engine packeges.

If they needed money to help fund the project; then they should drop there F1 program.

They never win.

And back American Formuls Drift. Toyota could throw a million dollars into 2 teams and marketing,

And realy debut this car with a Bang!

I love the WRX STI and I love the 86.

But I would never buy a basterd child of the two. Abomination!!!

86

It looks like a blend of GT-R , 370z, Genesis.

But there is No 86 Corolla there.

It dosn't have it's spirit.

It dosn't have the right heart.

I would rather buy an Identicle brand new 86 from Toyota.

87

Interesting car. Seems nice enough....

But NOT an 86 and HELL NO, a 86 Corolla revival.

What Toyota should make of our responce?

Give it another name and be more serious when u consider reviving a legend such as the Corolla 86;

Fire some people; or

Drop this whole concept and start from scratch.

Different desing based on the REAL Corolla 86, a decent inline 4 or 6 engine, no boxer, nothing else;

Toyota, improuve or make your own engines!

The bottom line this "FT-86" concept is nothing but a huge, big fat diss to the Corolla 86, it's legend and the fans.

88

aww wheres the flip up lights?? i wish they used that design still or at least something like a levin, not some miniaturized version of a new IS250/350. bummer....

89

Please say we get this in the US.

90

I've been waiting far too long.

I'll be picking one up as soon as they're available.

91

Chris Davy, if you have to ask why they used a boxer engine, then you don't know much about the sport of driting.

92

i don't get where the point is. if it will be as cheap as anouced (well, that something, i doubt, at least here in germany) it would be a cheap real wheel drive car, just like the old ae86. but i doubt we get at here at all, cause anythink prober from toyota is not avaible in germany.

ps. in germany pay for a prober golf with a 120bhp engine somethink like 27000€ (about 40k $) with tax (well, without discount). with discount it would be in the 25k € region. (about 37k $).

93

heh, for all we know, mazda maybe pulling a sneaky on all of us.

then BAM!!!

updated RX7 or should we say RX9 bishes!!

94

Such controversy this car is causing since it looks nothing like the old car, but being that said, i hope it still has the heart of what the AE86 did, lightweight, fun, and agile. At least a girl might think the car looks cool this time around.

Let's just hope Toyota brings it to america, and that it has decent aftermarket, ETC ETC!

95

That car looks great, and I love the sound of boxer engines. RWD, boxer motor, and good looks. A new car I would actually possibly buy.

96

We all know that Toyota teamed up with Subaru on its latest FT86 concept Jeroen posted about last week

97

Its a front of s2000, a body of infinity G35 and an ass of something else but I still like it )

Amen my brother. It makes me laugh to think that a majority of these people wouldn't have had the same opinion about the Toyota Corolla 10 years ago.
